25,000 mornings: Saying yes to the possibilities.

Tomorrow is moving day! And that means today is packing day.

Packing day is better than Christmas. In fact, it’s actually something of a reverse Christmas. Instead of acquiring things, today I shed things. If something has outlived its purpose, our journeys diverge on this glorious evening. I purge, purge and purge some more until everything I need fits into two suitcases.

Makes life feel pretty simple.

On a related note, have you seen the “25,000 morning” advertisement for Michigan Tourism? It stops me dead in my tracks whenever I hear it. If you live to be 68 (not sure why they selected that age?), you will have experienced slept through 25,000 sunrises.

If you really think about it, 25,000 isn’t much. If each sunrise were a second, that’s just under 7 hours. With such limited time – and no promise that we’ll reach the 25,000 mark – why in the world do we spend so much time saying “no” to the possibilities of life?

Tonight, as I pack my two suitcases into the car, I’m saying “yes”. Yes. Yes. Yes!

  1. Lol… I love how for even the littlest things like packing.. you can always make up 2 paragraphs about it… 2 very sensible paragraphs. 2 very sensible, inspiring paragraphs. I’m sure you get tired of hearing that.. but it’s true lol.

  2. I just have to thank you. For past month it seems that I’ve been in this awful mood! Small things would piss me off and I wasn’t my normal happy self. And I totally stopped doing my daily yoga/meditation routine. Reading your blog today seems to have rejuvenated my batteries. And now I notice how SILLY I was for getting so upset over such SILLY things! Thank you so much!

  6. Oh, and this post I think would have been a little bit better if it was a talky blog.. just sayin…

  7. Thanks for reminding me that life is short and when we say yes to opportunities that come our way we open ourselves to all the positive things the universe has in store for us. I am preparing to make a big move and the closer it gets the more stressed I am getting. Your message was just what I needed to bring me in from the ledge. Thanks Davie. Keep up the good work.

  8. A timely post for me having recently downsized
and still purging “stuff” to make the new home more liveable/comfortable/inviting.

In addition, helping the daughter of a dear friend who recently died go through the possessions and dispose of them be it via sale, donation, or trash. Such experiences definately gives one pause to reflect on what is important.

The most difficult items for me to deal with are the custom made zodiac board and the pendulum my friend used in her work as a psychic–two items that held great meaning and significance to my friend, but not to myself or her daughter other than the significance to the departed person.

  9. TWO suitcases? One I’m sure is for your undies but I can’t figure out what the secound one is for. ????

  11. Where is your next destionation?
    :D

  12. Where does the 68 come from? Divide the number of days in a year (365) into 25,000 and you get 68.5. So 68 years, being average life expectancy according to some statistic….

Anyway, this is a nice posting and being a native of Michigan, it was a nice reminder of the beauty of my home state. There is a certain wild beauty about it as you head to the Lake Michigan shoreline or “up north” into the woods of the northern part of the lower peninsula or the untamed beauty of the upper peninsua.

I have a sister who once lived in Petoskey, Michigan, almost to the top of the lower peninsula. My mother and I flew in via Chicago to Traverse City to see her. As we were circling to land, I could have sworn we were in the Caribbean with the islands and beautiful blue waters. It was pristine, nautre at its best, and a sight to behold. I will never forget it.

I hope to see you in NYC, Davey! Safe travels.

  13. Hey Tom,

I can agree with you 100%, having grown up in Michigan. It’s a great place!!! :)

Camping in the UP is fantastic. Isle Royale without cars is a fantastic vacation spot just for two. :)

  14. A warm embrace to you Glenn. Losing loved ones is hard, but it makes you see what is really important in life.

    Be well,

  15. A former lover used to fill a box with stuff each New Year, write the date on it and tape it closed. If the tape was still on it one year later, he dropped the box off at Goodwill or some other charity place.

We all have too much stuff.

    Be well,

  16. I hope I make it to 25,000 sunrises — I’m 59 right now.

  17. I once spent four years of my life hitchhiking around Canada and backpacking around the world. My entire life fit into a 55L pack. It was so liberating. I think turtles must have a great life!
