Today is my birthday – and my birthday wish has already come true.
Back when we reached 100,000 Davey Wavey YouTube subscribers, I knew that we had to do something special to celebrate. So I decided to film a pilot episode of a Davey Wavey reality show. Yesterday, the eve of my 28th birthday, was the filming date – and so a bunch of us (and many of you!) headed up to Provincetown for the filming.
The day was magic.
For a theme, we addressed coming out. We asked people on the streets for their stories and advice – and shared much of our own. The day was full of wonderful moments, but I want to share three of my favorite memories.
The first was when we interviewed an Iranian (but now Canadian) young man about his inspiring coming out story – and how his mom handled the situation. Turns out, the young man is also a blog buddy. When I told him to Google “Davey Wavey,” he shared that he’s been watching my videos for years.
The second was meeting George, a 19 year-old blog buddy from Boston who came up for the free hugs event. Shortly after coming out at age 17, his family kicked him out of their home. He lived with friends for a while, but is now putting himself through school, and working the graveyard shift as a translator to pay the bills. He was intelligent, balanced, centered – and hell bent on using his story to better the lives of others. He’s amazing – and you’ll undoubtedly meet George during the pilot episode.
The third stand-out moment was spending some time sitting with my mom on the back steps. We don’t usually talk much about our coming out story – or her struggle to accept and embrace my sexual orientation – and so having the cameras around was a good excuse to have a real conversation about one of our most emotional and raw moments.
I can’t wait to share the pilot episode with you. It may not be full of drama and arguments a la The Real Housewives, but it is full of love, spirit and inspiration. For my birthday, I couldn’t have wished for anything more.
Stay tuned…
