A dream come true? Not so fast…
January 19, 2009 | 37 Comments
Watching the continuing coverage of Obama’s upcoming inauguration, I’ve heard many people comment that MLK’s dream has come true.
I don’t agree.
Sure, electing our first African-American president is a huge step forward. But it doesn’t mark the end of racism. My very racist grandparents voted for Barak Obama, but it doesn’t mean they’re going to stop crossing the street when a young man of color is coming their way.
It’s a step forward. But it’s exactly that: one step on a journey of many. The road ahead is still a long one.
My sister still makes less than her male colleagues; gender inequality is an ongoing challenge. I still can’t get married in Rhode Island; LGBT people face constant discrimination. Millions of African American and Latino young people in the US don’t get an education equal to that of most whites, partly because the urban schools they go to don’t have as much money as the schools in the white suburbs; racism is still institutionalized.
Martin Luther King, Jr had a dream “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’”
That dream has not yet been realized. But on this historic eve, I have new hope of seeing its fulfillment.

Why has Obama chosen not to include Gays as part of his equality message? That sucks!!!
I don’t want my taxes to go up any more!
Let us be intellectually honest. He is bi-racial. Why can’t we accept this fact? What is wrong with being bi-racial? Racist white people were O.K. with voting for him since he was at least partly “like them.” While the term disturbs me, he IS a “magic negro” – an old concept. Do some research. It is rather interesting.
I know. He doesn’t REALLY like us
…
…I know. Those of us in the middle (not poor, but certainly not making what the media elite make) could really be hurt. It is hard to pay current expenses, save for college, save for retirment (since who has pensions anymore?!) and STILL feel O.K. about paying more taxes.
The problem Obama faces is trying to enact what he campaigned for. That is the hard part. Reality is setting in. His most liberal supporters are going to be mad but he has to do what is best for the country as a whole. What is probably going to surprise people is he will be more conservative than people believed he would. He has basically kept most of Bush’s men concerning the war issues. Easier said than done!!
…same old, same old. Campaign from the left, govern from the center.
Glad to see that other people are getting it. It’s all fluff. The status quo will always be maintained until REAL change takes place.
We are closer than we ever have before, and it is a fulfillment of a dream for many. It is a stepping stone, but also a place marker is history. It’s a moment that marks change, and says we will never go back. From this point, we continue to move forward, one day, one prayer, one dream at a time.
it´s the most profound ambiguity of America isn´t it – the man who wrote “all men are created equal” is the same one whose estate wouldn´t have been possible to exist without the existence of african slaves. but having obama as a president is a huge step in the right direction. we just dicussed this matter in my family and it was an amazing thought – my mum said that in her lifetime (born in war-germany, childhood under nazi-suppression, then the consequences of post-war germany, gone to the us as a teenager, coming back) she lived to see jfk, mlk, segregation, the cold war, apartheid, the wall coming down, german reunion, namibia independent, south african democracy…. and now, finally, an african-american president. W O W! what a time to have lived in. what an extraordinary thing to happen (even though, especially today, it shouldn´t be exactly that). what progress, what a chance, what a glimpse of what the future could be like!
Yes it is a step. A big step, but for those who never thought they would see an african-american/black/bi-racial president it is as though they have arrived. It reminds me of the tv program “The Jeffersons” – one family moved into a highrise and all of a sudden the world was different – except it wasn’t. An african-american man becomes president and you still have minorities being shot in the back in a subway station in Oakland, a young minority is killed in a well to do neighborhood because he arrives home at 2 am – a new world indeed.
He’s bi-racial, but I do believe he said he more identifies with being a black male, and let’s face, most other people do, too. He is definitely multi-cultural, too,
I absolutely agree. Whoever thinks that racism is over now is someone who has never been on the receiving end of it or wants to make themselves feel better by believing it’s over. Like many other problems, there’s no one magic solution. People are going to be so quick to judge him for any missteps he may take, ready to take him down and put just another white guy back into office.
Still, it is pretty amazing to see proof that we’re getting closer to it every day.
I’m not sure how that is possible. Think – honestly – about his life through law-school.
Indeed. This represents a step in the right direction. Let’s just be honest with ourselves.
Change…. It doesn’t come overnight.
But if one man had a dream and another can help to make this go a step further, then the dream is closer than before.
Let’s hope that this president will be a better one than the others have ever been.
Change and challenge, it is just a few letters appart from eachother.
I wish to all the people of Earth a better life.
Was MLK’s dream for equality or not? then why is it that as a White male am I discriminated against in order to fulfill quotas? My belief is that all applications should omit any names, races, and religions, and should simply have you place a Soc. Number as identification, and then you be admitted based on your own achievements and Merit, and not skin color. The sad thing is I believe Racism is back on the rise, because more and more of us are feeling like it’s becoming unfair.
I couldn’t agree more Karl. Thanks for being brave enough to express this often-felt/seldom-expressed feeling. I am for TRUE color-blindness (and many times such a goal IS possible – if that was our TRUE goal). My ancestors were one step above slaves, working in factories, etc. They couldn’t afford to send my parents to college and didn’t have the “right” connections. My parents had to work 3 jobs at times to make the “American dream” come true for their children. Now I’M the bad guy? Sometimes life is unfair – no matter the pigment of one’s skin.
Definately, and it’s not just racism either. If they had elected any kind of president (whether they were different because of their skin color, sex, sexual preferences, or religion) that wouldn’t mean that the discrimination towards that group would end. In fact, it might just escalate the feelings that people already have whether they are defending that president or furious that that “type” of president had been elected.
I agree, this is just one small step on the very long road to true human equality.
It has been a long time coming and there is still a very, very long way to go, but the path is looking a little more clear for those on taking the journey.
Definitely a great post!
Ciao!
He is just one cog in the wheel of many. Nothing will change.
Much like Davey will post pyscho crap in his blog about being connected to everything and everyone and how we should all go gaga over him yet he wont even take the time to acknowledge others. Who cares.
king george bush, you know they have blue blood, have cast a dark light upon the world, the people of the world are full of hope. kindness will soon return …….
The justification, in most people’s opinions, for quotas and ‘affirmative action’ is redress for the unjust practices of the past.
I have a friend who asked me to proof read his sister’s application to a Masters of Health Sciences program at UWO. When I read it I was surprized she had successfully completed grade school. This person had little concept of how to write a complete, cohesive thought. She has many strong suits but language isn’t one of them. And she wanted to specialise in speech/language pathology.
I asked my friend “How did Jill ever graduate from high school let alone her undergrad?” He told me that he and his brother would edit and rewrite her papers so she’d pass. They’ve been doing this ever since she was young because their parents expect them all to do well in the ‘important’ subjects. If she gets into this program she’ll be away from home for the first time and won’t have anyone to do the work for her. Nobody will be accommodating her and she will likely fail miserably.
IMO making concessions for people – making it easier for them – gives them a false sense of what it takes to really compete in the world. There’s an old Jewish saying “If you save a person’s life, they are your responsibility forever.” When my friend told his sister she’d have to edit her own work, recently, she cried to her mother who pleaded with him to do it. So he did. If you lower standards for people to ‘help’ them they will continue to expect and demand special accommodation. You may assist them in the short run but in the end everyone loses.
If we’re going to create real equality it’s going to take a lot more work on the fundamental issues plaguing our society. Focussing on the symptoms just doesn’t work.
It certainly happened that way for Kennedy – the only Catholic President to date.
I like your comment on change & challenge. Never heard that before. I guess one could say in order for change to happen you have to face the CHAlleNGE and get the “‘ell” out of there. It is amazing, how much easier change actually is when evil (‘ell) is no longer is peoples hearts. Here’s hoping folks can let go of any evil in their hearts and fill it with peace, harmony, & hope.
I hope the tone of our diplomacy does take a change. It seems Bush has made everyone mad with our policies. I don’t think we need to cave on our beliefs, but I do hope we can have a dialog with our adversaries, not just war. What is funny is we critize many countries on their stands but look at us??? Nearly bankrupt. Let’s get our house in order before we judge!!
Jubilation and resignation to arrival of new President!
For the people who say that obama doesn’t seem to recognize the LGBT community, if you guys remember in his victory speach, he mentioned that the country is made of many people, he included the Gay community. The inaugural address was made more for the unity of the nation, and the soul to uplift the country out of the hole its in already.
im sure he likes us, its just majority of society doesnt. and in this country the majority rules.
if youre making over 250,000 im sure you can manage
chad
i am bi-racial. my mom is white, my dad is black. i grew up in white suburbs and have gone to all white schools all my life. i dont act as though im ghetto, but i still identify as black. im proud to be mixed, but i look black, so does obama. you need to realize in this country “as the old saying goes” if you have have one drop of black in your blood then your black. maybe if you researched a little harder you would know that.
Listen and try understand. It is true what you said. But the last: ‘he wont even take to acknowledge others. Who cares’ If you think he is your friend or mate, it’s your problem not his. I don’t want to sound rude but it’s shortes and simplest way. And obviously you like him enough to care and again it’s your problem not his isn’t it? Undoubtly he is cute and easy going personality almost forgot handsom enough to not kick out from bed. So what? Think that way: how many real friends he got? How many his friends have you seen on his blog? I mean REAL FRIENDS? You just don’t appreciat what you got.
A WHAT? Blue blood? 99% americans are peasants including GWB. plz don’t make me lough. He is descedant of peasants and he act like peasant. I sugest to observe Elisabeth II before you talk about blue blood. One more thing nabob is not eaqual to aristocrat. Nobles oblige. American aristocracy? Paris Hilton? It make me sick. She is spoiled bitch in heat. But feel free to call Bush cowboy. Whatever you seen on westerns cowboys are cowboys nothing more. Americans are so funny. They make a movie and they think it’s real story. For your information kid history of your country is just story, legend 90% is fake.
Just remember what are grandparents saying, you don’t belive them now but you will soon or later. And they are old enough to earn respect from you even in this case. Don’t worry if you were black i would tell same. Both whites and blacks would tell you truth.
look up king george (gwb) blood line, you’ll see…
haha! excellent. looks like a big european party here! ;D but wasn´t maximo´s reply a joke? anyway, sometimes we shouldn´t look too close at our aristocracy either cause occasionally the difference to paris is not that big, actually. but for sure qe2 is a proper example of how to responsibly carry out one´s your duty
