We upgrade our phones, our computers, our TVs and even our boyfriends (jokes), but what about our lives? I read an article in which the author recommends that all of us do just that. Here are some of my suggestions for taking your life to the next level:
- Upgrade your food. Look for healthier versions of the things you currently eat and enjoy. If you like a sandwich, for example, replace the mayo with hummus.
- Upgrade your hugs. If you don’t hug, start. If you do hug, hold it 2 seconds longer.
- Upgrade your reading material. Read Deepak Chopra’s 7 Spiritual Laws of Success or other books that help grow you, your imagination, your creativity, your enlightenment, etc.
- Upgrade your free time. Instead of watching TV, spend time doing the things that bring you fulfillment or aid in your personal development. Like volunteering. Or visiting an inspiring art gallery.
- Upgrade your friends. Oh snap! Let’s face it: some friends aren’t good for you. You know who they are. Cultivate and prioritize the healthier relationships in your life.
- Upgrade your attitude. Enlightened people don’t complain. Saying, “I’m tired” accomplishes nothing. Going to sleep accomplishes a lot.
- Upgrade the thoughts you entertain. Bring awareness to your toxic thoughts and judgments – whether they are about other people or yourself. Inject a little love, kindness and compassion here and there; it can go a long way.
And here are some of my favorite suggestions by the blog buddies via Facebook and Twitter:
- Joseph: Write more poems. Read more poems.
- @Igtzalcorta: Delete all non worthy files (bad people/feelings) out of your hard drives (brain, heart, soul, etc.).
- Eric: Have a time each week where you focus on someone other than yourself.
- @OffTheYeaa: Focus on the joys of the little things.
- George: Look for the new in the old.
- @TheNewCognito: “When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.“
- Joe: Don’t give your day/life/situation the power to make you unhappy.
- @RyRyPhillips: Love deeper, judge less, laugh more, eat healthier, be appreciative and have lots and lots of wine and sex!
- Kristopher: Buy an iPhone 4. There’s an app for that.
- @CarlosInferi: Shut up and enjoy.
Thanks for all the great suggestions! Leave your own ideas in the comments below.

Don’t take stuff for granted! Think of how lucky each and every one of us are for even having the opportunity to live a peaceful, stress-free life.

Join your local St. John Ambulance, learn a new skill and put it to practice.
June 15, 2010 at 1:36 pm
jordan what is that? never heard of. Not in the USA or Italy I don’t think
June 15, 2010 at 2:09 pm
It is in the USA and I’m sure we’re in Italy, I know we are in France anyway but I know Italians don’t like the French nor do the Irish at the moment because of a football match. If we aren’t in USA we are deffinatly in Canada, google st John ambulance, you can learn first aid and cater for public events like concerts (for free)
June 15, 2010 at 2:12 pm
http://www.saintjohn.org/ that’s the USA website
June 15, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Yes I see now very good. The Italians don’t like the French cause of a football match? Oh maybe you speak of World Cup 2006 when the italians won the world cup over the French? Lol no friend the Italians dislike the French far more than a football match
I joke
June 15, 2010 at 2:30 pm
No the Irish hate the French at the moment because of a qualifer for the world cup therie Henry handballed the ball in to the goal and the referee allowed spoliling our chances, I shouldn’t be giving out about them they’re quite hot and they supply the sun, I’ve only been in Italy once quite nice location. Anyways I have a French exam in the morning so French is on the brain.
anyway if there is anything that the French Irish and Italians (most anyway) is that there is a dislike for British people

Hey-yes Italy great country-I have been all over europe but never been to England or Ireland. Would love to go–maybe this summer, returning to Italy soon for a few months. Take care
June 15, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Go to Ireland, we don’t have all the attractions like the London Eye, but our museums are good and there are pretty good tours, I recommend the Viking Splash Tour, very funny. The hospitality is good over here too and I recommend you fly Aer Lingus, not Ryanair however cheep they may be to get the full Irish Experience.
Have a good night, although it’s probably afternoon over there.

Forgive others and yourself even if you have been wronged. Try to accept others even when you know they don’t accept you. Try to look over the hurtful ways of another as you hope they over look your flaws. Do not go to bed angry. Love your parents cause they only do what they thought was best. Think harder before posting a article that will cause a firestorm-see how even the simplest words cause pain. Most of all DW love Christ-never forsake your baptism and confirmation promise

Ireland yes! I must go I have DVD from National Geographic all about Ireland-beautiful rolling hills. Never had much of a desire to go to London. I must try some “real” Irish beer. I am a wine and beer drinker. Ofcourse being Italian one drinks wine as a child. Beer well those are from college days-and grand pops he always the beer drinker-still is. I love stout beers or other darks heard Ireland the best.

6. Upgrade your attitude. Enlightened people don’t complain….So I’ve been following this guy at fullysickrapper.com for the past couple of months and he’s pretty much amazing. He’s been quarantined in the hospital for 6 months with TB, and instead of turning his situation into a poor-me-fest, he’s been putting out funny and uplifting videos. He even stood up for gay rights in Australia via his tumblr, and raised money for TB research from his hospital bed. So I’ve pretty much been taking a page from his book and yours and flooding my thoughts with positivity. BTW you should check him out if you dont know about him, he’s a cute Aussie.

Douche bitches, s**t’s gross

You could state this more succinctly as “Be grateful”.
June 16, 2010 at 1:16 am
St. John Ambulance exists in The UK, Canada, Australia, new Zealand and many other Commonwealth member-countries. It is much like the Red Cross, dedicated to promoting and teaching first-aid and CPR and providing ambulance services.

Only thing I can say about is drink guinness! You can have a tour around the bureury (how’d you spell that?) I hear it’s meant to be good, never been and afterwards you get free Guinness. Well not much rolling hills in Dublin but I say vist the gaelteacht areas (Irish speaking areas) for that sort of thing.

June 16, 2010 at 4:05 pm
not to sound robotic in any way, but about the suggestion give more hugs, im not really a hugging person, i dont know what it is, hugs make me feel uncomfortable and awkward

June 16, 2010 at 9:25 pm
You could probably catch a dirt-cheap flight on Ryan Air although the flight attendants wouldn’t be nearly as hot as the ones on Alitalia
June 16, 2010 at 9:27 pm
I was once very much the same as you. Over the past 15 years I’ve been hugging people as often as possible. I find it wonderful. There’s nothing like the human touch to help one maintain his or her wellbeing.
June 17, 2010 at 8:35 pm
As I said earlier to go for the true Irish experience, fly AerLingus, they are the only airline that saw ‘noow’ in a very irish way when they hand you things and they are much nicer than the underpaid Ryanair staff and half of them speak very poor english. I’ve seen a few hot Air Hosts, as we call them here (female: air hostess), on AerLingus in my day.

I always love articles that use the metaphor for our habits etc as computers. Cheers for this article mate.
