Yesterday, my good friend Matt and I were on the phone, reminiscing about our university days. Spring was our favorite time of the year at university. Trees blooming. Warmer temperatures. Less clothing. A promising summer ahead.
Admittedly, when we were at school, we did a lot of complaining. Much of the university experience was lost on us. It took graduating – and working in the real world – for us to realize the greatness of school. As a student, your profession is to learn things. That’s freaking amazing! And yet, we spent our days grumbling about boring professors, exam schedules and papers.
We were unable to see the amazingness of the moment. Looking back, I believe that the same can be said for almost every other period of my life. Anyone can look back and see how great things were; hindsight is 20/20. And anyone can look forward and dream of an amazing future. But far and few between are the people that can see the value of today.
If, looking back, we can see how each moment was substantially more amazing than we were able to realize, the same is true for today. And that’s my point: today is wonderful. Caught up in memories of the past or future, worried about the latest news, or distracted by big penises or shinny objects, we may not always see today’s wonderfulness. But I can assure you, it’s here.

I agree, school was great, but didn’t think so at the time. I still need to work on living in the moment and enjoying life. A work in progress I guess.

Learning to live in the “moment” is tragically hard and the most rewarding lesson you can ever learn. It is truly life changing! Sadly most of us have to get close to death to understand it.

Good post Davey, and I hope that you will be true to your promise that “it’s here” now when you said
“…….. Less clothing. A promising summer ahead.”

I’m in my first year of University and this post has confirmed what I feel already. This is what I am focused on right now, learning and although that might sound nerdy I’m actually enjoying the oppertunity and amazing resources that allow me to fill my head with all sorts of stuff. Almost every university has an extensive library and is part of numerous online databases that have so many acedemic journals. I’ll think twice before I complain about school again. (3 essays to finish this week, next week I’m going to the Caribbean!)

Periodically in life, I do tend to live in the future; however, I had a fantastic university experience, and I really didn’t want it to end. I appreciate the reminder to live and enjoy the moments we’re in b/c I don’t always do that.

Living in a small college town is a constant reminder that school can be fun. Outside school you see silly people outside getting a DUI at 10am or the occasional drunk person passed out in front of 7 11. In school there are overeducated and understimulated faculty that make the days wiz by. I think I enjoy these small things to much and it is probably my time to graduate

Yeah, the past was good, the only problem with reminiscing about the past is the realization that it was someone else’s past. If the past you has died, why look back to what a dead person did, it doesn’t help any. Look forward only to the joys that the future holds and seize the day because today is when you are living your future.

I’ve been having a shitty shitty week.
This post reminds me that I’ll look back and see how this crappy week has made me learn things and grow.
The present is beautiful and every moment and experience helps shape the people we are and the people we will become.
Thanks Davey. =]

yes the days spent at USMA werent exactly the best days of my life, but the total experience was worth it. the friends i acquired there are still with me and we are so close. school taught me to be a man not just a boy, responsibility for my own actions and those of my subordinates.
yes those were the days my friend, i was fortunate enough to be able to be a part of a great experience!!

yes, school was an experience, being tortured at a Catholic school, learning less at a public one.today one has an overload of information to learn, its so much better today.an experience today is endless opportunity.im jealous of those in school today.today the future is endless, opportunity,as well.
March 10, 2009 at 10:56 am
well, i am still in highschool and its hard to see the amazingness of today when your being called a f*g, and other names. you forget what is is like for highschool students.

Hi, Davey, not to diminish the value of your post a bit, I just like to point out when looking back at things, people tends to remember only the good parts. Having said this, nothing is purely good or bad, we have to enjoy life for the good bits and try our best to acknolwedge the bad parts but not to let them rule our life, which again brings us back to your post.

Thank God for big penises. They bring sunshine to a cloudy day.

To live in the moment is a very zen-like thought, and ultimately very difficult to accomplish. We can approach it when eating favorite foods, making passionate love with your partner-in-life, or listening to favorite music with no distractions. If we can carry that kind of experience into our daily lives, we can become better, more effective, more loving human beings.

I do enjoy the manner in which you have presented this particular matter and it really does supply me some fodder for consideration. On the other hand, from what I have experienced, I basically hope when the actual remarks pack on that people today keep on issue and in no way embark on a soap box involving the news du jour. Anyway, thank you for this exceptional piece and even though I can not necessarily go along with this in totality, I respect the standpoint.

Generally Id gotta to agree with you. Last quarter when I was shopping at Walmart I had a similar dilemma. I eventually to acquire it.
