Quiet time.

The universe (or God, or your higher self, etc.) can speak to us in many ways. For me, the universe speaks most profoundly through silence.

In the book that I’m currently reading, 10 Secrets for Success and Inner Peace, the author has an entire chapter about embracing silence. The author reminds us that in music, it is the space between the notes that matters most – without the pause, music would be one continuous noise.

It’s estimated that we have 60,000 unique thoughts each day. No wonder so many of us are short on balance; it’s very easy to get caught up and carried away by our minds.

Today, I’ve set aside 4 hours of Davey time. I’m going to turn off my computer, my TV and my cell phone. I’m not even going to open a book. I’m just going to silently go about my afternoon. I’ll take a long bath. I’ll meditate – or at least try. I might do some cleaning, or spend time cuddling with the dog. But above all, I’m going to give my “being” a figurative hug. I’m going to give myself the gift of silence. I will take time to turn inward and observe my thoughts and my feelings. I’ll focus my energy on different parts of my body, fully experiencing my human form.

For 4 hours, I will be fully present to this beautiful world.

I invite you to do the same, in whatever amount of time works best for you. Even if it’s just 10 or 15 minutes.

  6. The word “silence” has a special meaning these days! Aligns itself with PEACE, JOY and LOVE! May you have each of those today, Davey and BLOG Buddies! :) MAY you carry JOY and Happiness thru-out 2009! PEACE! Doug in KC

  7. The only time I have any time to myself is when I go on Holiday and take great pleasure in pampering myself by just being OUTSIDE in the sunshine and Reading and Resting.

It may sound very indulgent, but it suits me and helps me cope with the rest of the year when I am at everyones beck and call (Including my animals)

I am so envious of people who can set aside a few hours of their time and Do Nothing. I would feel that I had failed!

But thats just me – A Peaceful 2009 to you All

  8. Thanks for getting back to the positive again. Those last couple of post almost made me kill over. Maybe I’ll try this one on New Year’s Eve.

  9. True silence is experiences when one transcends all the senses, touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. Here is where ‘Being’, the immortal ‘Self’ is Known.

Train your nervous system to function from that level of perpetual silence through daily meditation and you gain support of all the Laws of Nature. From this level of silence a mere thought is all that is necessary to effortlessly fulfill your every desire.

  11. Four hours is a long time. Perhaps you should become a monk and join a monestary, really!

  12. Sorry Davey,

  13. Yeah 4 hours is a long time. It’d be better spent with a blog buddy and just have quiet time or hang out together.

  14. I totally agree for 4 hours of nothing but silence. I have done that before probably not 4 hours but close to it. I just sat down and kind of sorted my life together and thought about things I wouldnt normally think of.I love doing it from time to time.

  15. Holy crap!

When you mentioned that the most important part of music is the silence between notes, I totally had a Bart Simpson moment when Lisa asked him what a tree sounds like when it falls in an empty forest, when no one is there to hear it…

Sent a bit of a chill down my spine

  16. Huns…you are only supposed to meditate for 30 seconds…and P.S. meditation is a state of mind like the imagination. you can daydream of waterfalls all you want in silence but thats childs play. The master of meditation is the woman who can comfort a screaming baby in the middle of the night while trying not to wake up the rest of the family and still keep her sanity. The Pro’s are the ones who remain at peace while in the check out line.

The best meditaters are the ones who stay calm, peaceful, balanced and centered NO MATTER WHAT! everything else is just mental masturbation

  17. Davey, your hair is too long. I prefer it trimmed. Thank you!

  18. Woah, this is a great website.I accidentally found your video on youtube and links to here. You’re funny, athletic and very spiritual. That’s rare.^^

Sorry I digress, for me 4 hours of silence is almost impossible.I will be drown in my negative thoughts -_- although I agree that we as human need our own time alone, away from everything that clutter our mind. It’s very hard imagining myself away from computer, but I think I’m going to do it little by little.

ps: your blog is very inspiring.Keep up the great job.

Whoever wrote that book has a point, but should consider studying the music of people like John Cage and Morton Feldman. Not only were these composers followers of Eastern philosophy, but I think they would disagree about what “music” and “noise” are, what role each plays in our everyday life, and indeed, what our attitude *should be* toward them.

  20. Smiling, I’ll meet you there.

  21. nice Calvin Klein’s! ;)

I love this post and when I thought about it I found that I already have silence sometimes. Don’t laugh but I love just sitting on the toilet…in silence and just think about life.

    I love it.

    Happy New year, Gavin

  22. It works…every time…
