The moment is here.

Last night was the first time that I really “got it.” As images of the president-elect flashed across the screen, and as hundreds of thousands of people flocked into Washington, DC (in what can only be compared to the Hajj), I finally got it.
This isn’t about Barack Obama. Barack Obama is a human being, just like you and me. But he has become a symbol to so many in this nation. Today isn’t about Barack Obama. It’s about what he stands for in the collective American mindset. Hope. Unity. Progress.
After a difficult year and a tumultous decade, we have hope. After participating in a divisive political theater that has stretched well beyond the presidency of George W. Bush, we have renewed unity. And after years of darkness for so many of us, there is a promise of progress.
Barack Obama, the first African American president of the United States, is the personification of progress. You can see it in his face, hear it in his words and feel it in the atmosphere of today’s festivities.
A symbol of hope, unity and progress, Barack Obama has given all of us a great gift of inspiration. And a little inspiration can get a long way in lighting the darkness.

It is truly a great day for America!
im not from the states but i herd that the kkk’s were going to try kill him
they already tried didnt they??
well hope good things come for use who live in the u.s.a
Today is one of those days…where we will remember where we were when he took office, when he became our president, when he reminded us that hope and progress are real.
Ciao!
Really? All this talk of hope and unity, progress and change, has me laughing. A sorta “look at all these silly people” laugh. Look, I get it, Obama = progress for sure. That’s a given. A black man is now president, amazing!
BUT, don’t get it confused with anything beyond that. Obama’s election is just a perpetuation of the same status quo that has existed in American politics for decades. There will be no real change because the same people are in charge (they just happen to be flying a different banner).
Until we completely reexamine our society and what drives us, the system will remain the same. It’s all about profit, that’s what drives these people, that’s what determines the decisions and platforms of our so-called leaders. That’s what needs to change. Our entire monetary system. But, hate to tell you, Obama is not the man for that. He is a product of the system. He’s been shaped and molded for this position for years, and is just as powerfully controlled by lobbyist as all the other major politicians.
I do have hope, but I don’t think one man, or even one government, can provide the hope that people are longing to see. And as far as unity goes, we are all one just because of our nature. We are all connected. Why can’t that be what people talk about? All this talk of “white America” and “black America”, just separates us more. We focus on the differences even when we talk about progress.
This is a great day, but nothing more.
The light in your penis trick is better.
Sure Obama may be a great leader but there is one big flaw in this.
People will listen and follow what he has to say, because he believes in change, etc.
The problem is, one person will not solve problems for the millions. People have this entitlement mentality that they deserve this and that.
See, right now, people are giving their power away to someone else in hopes of solving their problems.
In reality, we are responsible for that.
In the end, if things don’t work out for us, we will blame government.
and the cycle continues
i love Obama i really do believe he will make a difference i voted for him
i love the picture
Hugs And Kisses

Umm Andrew, with all due respect.
You don’t even know Obama and why don’t you start with making a difference for yourself, not giving your power up and assuming someone will make a change for you.
People will not act in your best interest, even if they do, they need to get something out of it.
How we should take his leadership is as motivation for us to individually make a difference.
Tom,
With all due respect to you – how judgemental of you to assume that Andrew has given up his power and that he is not doing things that are within his control to make things better. His statement was simple and you read a whole lot into it that you had no evidence to support.
Yes, Obama is President and Presidents do not wield ultimate power. He may hope and aspire to many things, and lets face it, with all the expectations on him, unless he can part the Red Sea, people will be disappointed. But it’s as Davy says, it’s about what he symbolizes. His election isn’t an end to racism but it signifies a milestone. And I hope that someday he is remembered as a great president, instead of people using the modifier of a black president.
Ok I understand what you are saying. Maybe I looked too much into it and assumed what he(Andrew) stands for.
My point is that people are missing the point, and assuming others will solve their problems when in reality we are responsible for our actions and lives.
Thanks for the comment though.
Obama brings Hope back to America like Reagan (no comment on other of his stands) brought back the thought its good to be an American and to be Patriotic. It is truly historic that in uniting us to face the world and work together, Obama will be remembered.
That is so negative. I wish it didn’t make sense to me.
Don’t compair Obama to Reagan…there is NO connection, altho i voted for Reagan the first time(we make mistakes)! OBAMA represents what AMERICA is All about…To achieve a “dream”…we ALL have our own dreams, NONE of us have been asked to sacrifice in the last 8 years of BUSH Whacking economics! What a pitiful site seeing BUSH and Cheney at the ceremony!
True we may have a BLACK president but Barack has NEVER made that an issue…IT IS A UNITY issue! Sometimes I don’t think some of you folks really “get it”! Glad to see YOUNG generation became involved in politics last year…and VOTED! May there be JOY in our hearts with a NEW president and NEW goals for our nation! Let Nothing or NO one steal your joy! PEACE!
Doug in KC
Let’s just be hopeful people!
and lets still believe we live in a country that is going forward and change for all of us will come!
God Bless America!
THANK YOU BRIAN, you make an excellent point.
Finally someone that gets it.
Yes Obama is a product but let me explain. The past 10 years have been bad, especially lately with war and economy. The moment people hear change and all this crap, they think Obama will bring them colorful rainbows just because.
I read somewhere before that Obama’s campaign is so powerful, but it is based on one word “CHANGE”, that’s it. The power that words have.
What is lets just be hopeful mean?
Are you giving up the idea of how much of an influence you can have on others and the world?
Or you think things will fix itself?
mind explaining dallasjjguate?
I totally agree…
But Yes, I don’t think CHANGE will come immediately… It would take all his First Term (4yrs) plus another 4 more long hard working years to Remake – Reshape – Rebuild AMERICA!!! Although lets Hope and Pray that CHANGE is here to stay… A Great Change!
And YES / NO, he is NOT just pure 100% African American considering that his FYI background is a BI-RACIAL mix (50% White and 50% Black)… So why can’t EVERYONE see that or say that / accept the FACT that the New President Elect BARRACK H. OBAMA is BI-RACIAL rather than the Overrated hype of calling him just an African American; It does Not bring about any justice to his other (Caucasian side), or rather that put on a little dissin “hate” or somewhat “discriminate” his other side of being half White (from his Mother’s side). Don’t WE all agree???
So with that said, WE all should acknowledge and accept the fact that OBAMA is BI-RACIAL Half White and Half Black, not just African Black American. He is 50-50 Half White and Half Black, Everyone!!! (Talk bout NO MORE RACISM…LOL Anyway)
And, Oh by the way, LETS ALL hope that he/they would acknowledge, consider, accept and approve of PROP 8: GAY RIGHTS to MARRIAGE and GAY ADOPTION RIGHTS as well soon… Cuz if He’s been talkin bout CHANGE, I strongly believe and think that is / should be a PART of CHANGE they want US all to BELIEVE IN and WORK On… CHANGE to ACCEPT, ACKNOWLEDGE and GIVE RESPECT as well as RIGHTS to GAY MARRIAGE and GAY ADOPTION RIGTHS!?! But I heard only HILARY CLINTON who actually (honestly) Support Gay Rights and Prop 8, so I duno?!?
Only TIME will TELL…
Lets Hope CHANGE would brought Us all about being OPEN MINDED and TRUE ACCEPTANCE for EACH RACE, RELIGION, CULTURE and SEXUALITY!!!…Now that’s CHANGE this AMERICA needed and should Have, soon!?!
Anyway.
Nonetheless, I think OBAMA will DO bring a Great Change to Our AMERICA… whether it will take forever or slowly but surely, it has come! And with HILARY CLINTON as US Secretary of State, and Vice Pres. BIDEN they will make a Great TEAM !!! Lets sure hope its NOT just some kind of a GOVT. “CLICHE” Production number or another Robotic Hollywood BS effect REPUBLICAN – DEMOCRATIC Publicity Stunts Cover Up + Overrated Hype!?! Blah.
Go DEMOCRATS!
Go OBAMA-NIANS!
Go CHICAGOANS!
I am Proud to be from CHICAGO!
and I am Proud to be a Democrat!
and I am Proud to be a OBAMA and CLINTON Supporter!!!
CHANGE has Come… Let sure hope so!?!
I have a dream. The dream being when someone asks how do you want to be refered to as, “Black, negro, african american, person of color, gay, lesbian,…chalenged, or whatever, it just becomes a moot point. Why don’t you just call me by my first name.
we have to BE the change we wanna see …
better to keep an open mind – indeed obama is entrenched in the elite system he is bankrolled by it how else would he be where he is – lets see if HE has the courage to be an example of CHANGE and walk his talk – unless he can gradually progressively weed out the parasites and greed, liars within the administration congress and senate he will have no chance. So far not impressed with his selections in his administration particularly his Zionist chief of staff – there are way to many -ve dark elite influences abound – how he will facilitate change amongst that well i look forward to some possible surprises. Obama to americans currently in a state of desparation despair poverty consciousness and sense of hopelessness and fear can PROJECT anything they want HIM to be – why because that is what humans do, they give their power away to other to presidents and governments hoping and desparately wanting to believe in change and that they finally surely after all the BUSH years will do something. Hmmmmmm lets see – dont forget father bush and the other cronies are still around with their dark reptilian tentacles deeply entrenched in all of the foundations of corporate america – dont think for a minute they will surrender easily…….
YES! Exactly! Why is it so hard for people to understand that?!?
You guys are awesome and get the whole picture.
well its true – real true CHANGE must take place within the hearts of each individual consciosuness and american. wake up from your delusions and false hopes, be accountable and responsible to yourselves – forget being nannied by the nanny state!
i saw alot of people cry. its wiered but cool that today is all about history
It was really great to see that finally happen today, plus I miss a class to watch that in TV with my friends haha. Have a nice day Davey Cheers!!!
You’re absolutely right, it is a wonderful new beginning for America.
Thanks for your thoughts Davey!
So to the people who have doubts about Obama:
What are you actually suggesting??
I heard that there was so many people Obama’s motorcade couldn’t get thru, so Obama waved his staff and parted the Potamac River. LMAO.
I wanted intellectual honesty during the election. During these difficult times (funny, hope and change didn’t help the stock market today), we don’t need an “American Idol” president. We need experience – but I guess that was too boring for some. I wasn’t against change. I was ready for it. However, I like to know there is water in the “change pool” before I jump into it. It needs to be said – his skin color (and the apparent obsession with it) won’t change anything. It might make some feel good about themselves, but by itself it will do nothing to change the serious issues that we face. Guilt is a powerful emotion, and one that some might like the cleanse themselves of. For example, Robert Byrd was a former KKK member – and Obama supporter. Is that true change (perhaps), or just readying one’s self for the after-life? As a member of a mixed-couple, the whole thing just makes me sad. I’m confident that this wasn’t the goal of MLK Jr.
Didn’t Charlie Gibson just report this fact?!
Folks, we are 1/2 of the way there. He is bi-racial, and that is just fine. However, let’s not kid ourselves. This IS progress, but we aren’t there yet. We also need to get to the point where folks don’t vote for a candidate simply because of the color of his or her skin. Sadly, that wasn’t the case in this election.
Chad, you are awesome, great reply.
Also “ituptoyou” made a great reply too.
Both of you guys get the reality of this whole situation.
Keep posting great replies.
chad
who are you to say that this was not the goal of MLK Jr, especialy coming from the guy who says being the first african american president doesnt change anything? just so you know, MLK Jr. was planning on running for president, so its pretty fair to say that it was his goal. your 100% wrong about him being black wont change any serious issues, this is just as big (actually bigger) than if gay person were to ever take office (considering blacks were enslaved). and your telling me that if a gay person ever took office that you would preach that it doesnt matter because it doensnt change anything.
@hmmm
If i understood what you said here. So if i were to change the skin of my color, that would change the face of a country?
You have got to be kidding me. Have you really examined what is behind the face?
How can we call this progress when we kill unborn children with legal abortion.
Obama did NOTHING extraordinary to get the presidency. He was CARRIED there by the adoring press, a nation’s guilt, and people’s desperation for “change.”
I was in DC today and I can honestly say that most of the people there voted for Obama solely because he is black. So when people say they want “change”, what they really mean is they want a different skin color on their President. It is absolutely ridiculous to assume that Obama’s skin color automatically makes him the personification of change.
Truth be told, Obama’s connection to the African community is flimsy at best so all this hooplah baffles me. His African father, whom he mentions all the time, wasn’t exactly a fixture in his life. (Didn’t he leave when Obama was 2…) And also, didn’t Obama grow up in Hawaii and Indonesia? So kudos to Obama for dexterously maneuvering between races so that he could seem as black as possible when he needed to and as white as possible when that was necessary.
All Obama does is tell us the obvious, but with some soaring rhetoric. The real problem here is that Americans NEED the president to tell them something as basic as “pick yourself up” and “save your own ass.”
Yes, today will go down in history. Perhaps as the day American’s brought about positive change to the nation. Or perhaps, as a start of a series of events that reveals a grave mistake.
Another great reply, thanks J.
Either way, we as the people need to individually get up and make a change.
How do I know? Let’s see: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” I have the same goal in mind. Unfortunately, I think we fell short of this goal during this election. P.S. it is “you’re,” not “your.”
Yes, please call me Chad. What a great post.
It’s very easy to be a spectator, commentating and analysing those people on the court who are playing the game. I’m reading a lot of that in the posts in here.
Obama’s skin colour makes absolutely no difference in how he will govern. But it makes all the difference for the black youth out there who have a role model in the highest office in the city. Real or perceived, there is a wall that separates the races in people’s minds. It’s tough for people to break through the wall unless they’ve seen someone who appears like they do has done it first
Obama will not be able to change the world for each of his constituents. He is one man. What he can do is inspire people through his oratory and his natural charisma; to incite them to do those things that they could and should do for themselves. Some people have no idea that they have the power within them to make a difference for themselves and for their lives. They are resigned and cynical about the situation. What’s more is they don’t know it. And they don’t know that they don’t know it. If Obama can give them hope and inspire them to be the change they wish to see in their worlds then maybe he can change the world for each of his constituents – each one who actually takes his messages to heart.
Obama is far left and could potentially alienate all the centre-right supporters he now enjoys. Even still, he is your President. As one nation, it’s critical you support your President regardless of your political beliefs and opinions. Most people criticize people of the opposite political stripe rather than working with them. One of the great things we could learn from Ronald Reagan is that it is possible to disagree with someone and still work with them towards a common goal. Rather than criticizing and dividing, you could seek to understand and influence.
My political leanings are conservative. I wouldn’t have voted for Obama in the election. I don’t think his ultra-left tendencies will work well for everyone. But he is the President. He is charismatic. He is inspiring. He’s mobilizing people on a scale the likes of which I’ve never seen. He has all the skills of a great leader and that’s what people need most in a President.
I heard a great explanation of the progress that Obama represents. Dr. Joy Browne said on her radio show today that Barak Obama’s election to the Presidency doesn’t represent progress for the black people. They’ve always had it within them to become whatever they wanted to be, given the right circumstances. This represents progress for everyone else who, in electing Barak Obama President, have finally realized the right circumstances. It’s not the end of racism. It’s not the end of prejudice. It’s not the end of division. It is an umprecedented step towards creating a colourblind and unified America.
I’m not an American. I don’t agree with his politics. I think he lacks experience that could be valuable in the Presidency. I think there are a lot of things that make him a less than perfect President. And yet he still excites and inspires me. I’ll support inspiration any day.
What a negative- defeatist attitude you have! Here we have the first opportunity for hope and change in a long long time and you don’t seem to want to give him a chance. For once in years I was proud of my country today. I was fortunate enough to be on vacation at a gay resort in Key West Florida USA to watch the inaugeration at the bar with all gay freinds. I was also privilaged to buy champaign for the house and propose a toast for all our future as an american and a member of the gay community. We were all delerious with joy today. This country needs a leader with a vision to improve all our lives and to return our country to greatness——and we just may have him.Peace and prosperity to you all. Ted
It is really sad to me that the word “black” was even uttered today by the media and by other blog members.Human beings should be acknowledged for what they have accomplished and for their contributions to the good of all humanity. Nothing else should matter. Oboma seems to be a very open, honest, compassionate man. I will trust him until he gives me reason not to. Ted
Today I myself wondered if others would compare Oboma to Reagan in their ability to unite the country. Politics has NOTHING to do with this.I hated Reagan’s politics but I admired his charisma and his ability to resonate with the country.Strong leaders do matter to a country for the better or for the worse. Hitler is a prime example. If Oboma is the leader he seems to be and if he will work for the good of the country as he says he will then we have alot to look forward to. I’m going to bed now happy in my dreams of the future and not wanting to hear any more negative comments tonight.—Ted
ahmen
I cried today as did many others with me –they were tears of joy–now I’m to bed–Ted
We make progress every day, even before he came along.
Well typed. You type the things that many of us believe – but many are afraid to type.
Of course we are not there yet. We will never be there. Life’s not about being there, it about the JOURNEY that LEADS us there. And as long as we are going in the right direction, putting forth sincere effort with good intentions and openminded intellectual discernment, we are making PROGRESS. And I want to beleive (and hope)that Mr. hOpeBAMA is doing just that. And as so many others have already said, it is not for us to follow him, but rather to walk/work side by side with him. Together WE can make a difference. “Yes, WE can!”
well expressed. encouraging to see a number of people on here not afraid to look at the real essence of this and of obama. There was courage in his speech and as a whole the inauguration was uplifting but not as much as one would expect. Obama has a potential gift and talent to utilise and uphold integrity and truth in office. Lets give him and his soul a chance to express this and evolve. At the same time he will be seduced tempted and distracted by all manner of people in his pathways; it is how he handles and responds to them and his challenges that will now reveal the essence of obama. Unfortuately the celebrity element which was HUGE at the event dragged down the overall energy of the day; and i hear obama is a big fan of Jay-Z – well sadly that is not good Jay-Z is an expression of dark energy and an extremely shady character. So you can see how the power and the allure and aphrodisiac of power will truly test and challenge obama in his term as president. On the taking the OATH – given that BUSH did this ritual twice well what does that say to you about the value and upholding of that. BUSH will endure his remaining days submerged in unconscious guilt that he cannot ever escape until he wakes up to his deeds and actions over the years; not likely in his drugged out state – did you seem him in his address miked up for his speech prompting, he absolutely is on something and i dont mean medication.
Did any one see the gay and lesbian marching band at the parade yesterday? It was the first time a gay organization was invited to the parade. yay !
I saw a bit of it on TV. I was at the inauguration, but with two million people there it was like being in a combo gay str8 bar, with the cutest girls and boys (including Davey) all naked, resulting in a sardine can packing of people.
But on a more serious note, comparing Pres. Obama to Bush, Bush isn’t one tenth the man Obama is, though he almost certainly wins re the size of his penis (dick), cuz that is all he is. Maybe related to why he chose cheney also.
Well, there was the gay hating maggot christian preacher Ted Haggard (and so many others), whom it was not at all surprising to find out likes to have guys suck his member so much that he was willing to pay for it. Now that Bush is out of office, maybe someone will dump the truth about them. Maybe Cheney’s gay daughter. Think of it – the two of them …………………………. [smiles]
I HAD a dream. Now it has happened. The ball is in your court now, what are you going to do with it?
