Where do I end and you begin?

We all have boundaries. At least, our bodies and minds do.

What is a boundary? It’s a border or edge. Our skin, for example, marks the boundary of our physical body. Even within the boundary of our skin are several other boundaries, like nerves, veins, cell membranes, etc.

This begs the question: Where do I end?

I know that I am not my body. So, my skin can’t really mark the end of me.

When someone gets too close to me, they have trespassed into a another boundary called my “personal space.” This boundary is more fluid, and it’s different for different people. Adam Gregory, for example, can invade this region – or any other space therein. Wink, wink.

I also have other boundaries, such as sex, sexuality, religion, etc. But these are boundaries of my mind, and I am not my mind either.

From some place beyond knowing, I feel that the real me doesn’t have these (or any other) boundaries.

This afternoon, I was cuddling with my dog and looking into her eyes. In them, I could see myself. I couldn’t see Davey Wavey, but I could see the real me. It’s a different form, but the same light. It’s a different expression, but the same life force. That which animates my dog, animates me.

In this true reality, there are no boundaries, physical or otherwise. There is no separation. And everything is one.

So where do I end and where do you begin? I think the premise of the question is incorrect. The way I see it, there is no “you” or “I”. There is only the greater “I” that encompasses all. And if all of us understood this, how could we ever intentionally harm another person or creature again?

  4. There’s a theory in science that this reminded me of… I’m not completely up on it so forgive me if I explain it incorrectly. Essentially with every atom, the electrons generally orbit the nucleus… however it has been found that at any given time any electron can leave its orbit around the nucleus and essentially be anywhere in the universe, including orbiting any other nucleus in existence. So, essentially, no body really ends anywhere…. any part of one person can be inside of any other person at any time. Kind of cool!

    • Close,

In physics the current most commonly accepted idea is quantum mechanics and the wave mechanics model. It doesn’t say the electron could be anywhere it says that there is a high probability the electron is in a given orbit, however what this means is that there is a small probability it is somewhere else entirely. Physics hugely relates to what Davey talks about frequently and is as noble a study as philosophy.

The next thing the wave mechanics model goes on to discuss is the dualistic nature of light to be either a wave or a particle, and we don’t know what it is until we observe it, the act of observing it defines how we see it.

So to put all of this very complicated physics together (the very tip of quantum mechanics) we can say there is only a probability that there is a defined boundary and that the act of observing the boundary is what defines it.

Yes Davey even the mechanics of the universe struggle to define where you end and I begin.

  5. Soooo true, Davey.

And, knowing that we are all a part of, and share in the Oneness of LIFE, we have no excuse for not spreading unconditional peace and love to everyone (including our selves). Because, in the big picture, they are us and we are them.

    Peace and Love,

  6. Think of this, from a biological perspective, every person now living, formerly living, and yet to be living, had his/her genesis in the same primordial organism. In other words, everyone shares the same ancient, ancient ancestor. We’re all family, bro.

  7. I think in many ways that all the harm that is done in this world stems directly from not realizing that we are all, humans animals plants and inanimate objects, connected in ways that we don’t often perceive. Someone much wiser than me once said “We are here to grow beyond our illusion of separateness” or words to that effect. As kral has already posted, on the quantum level it is extremely difficult to define the separation between different systems (think entities or bodies). Also as Joe has stated, all biological systems share common ancestors. To take that a bit further, all biological systems are dependent on one another to survive in a wonderously complex system that we now only understand the most basic and rudimentary levels of. Soon or later, we will all realize these facts and then we can really begin to work towards making this planet the paradise that it can be.

Thanks Davey for bringing this up. I love you and everybody else out there too.

  8. hmmm not sure about this one.
Also physics sucks and I hate it
also That guy is SOO not THAT cute. he’s a youngin too!

    • Physics sucks and I hate it? Physics is responsible for the computer you
used to post your message. I could see maybe, “I don’t understand
physics” or “my physics teacher wasn’t very good so I never really
understood or enjoyed physics” but “physics sucks and I hate it”? Open
yourself to the world a little.

    • KHW really?? Do you actually think I meant that physics sucks and is bad?? I mean come on. Obviously it is just not my favorite subject and I am not a science person. i am sure you have never said “______ SUCKS AND I HATE IT. Never…. Maybe you need to open yourself up to jokes and sarcasm. To be so rude to someone for a such a stupid (obviously not to be taken literally) comment…wow! You must have an AWESOME personality!

  9. Welcome :)
And now? Ahead and see, invite and share in any good way.

  10. Right on, Davey!!

For the most part those things, including our skin, that we see as boundries are constructs of our brain (mind). We may think that our skin keeps things out (and of course keeps things in too – you know – like blood), but it is a permeable membrane. All sorts of things pass through it all the time: RF waves pass through us all the time, various kinds of particles from suns both our own and others in our galaxy etc.

Because our senses and brain only experience things at a certain level of size, frequency, and speed – there are all sorts of things going on around us and passing through us that we simply cannot be aware of. We are far less “isolated islands” than we experience oursleves.

John Donne (1572 – 1631) way back when wrote: “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were. Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

All this without benefit of science as we know it today.

    • Modern science has an ego problem. It seems that those who work in the scientific domain are always surprised that others, ages ago, also knew what they have just (re)discovered. With all our wonderful knowledge we still build ticky-tacky structures instead of pyramids and solid edifices able to stand for thousands of years. We don’t make Parthenons anymore.

Now science has found out some neat explanations for the workings of the Universe, but ancient civilizations “knew” many of these things intuitively. Both India and Chine, the two oldest civilizations still functioning have deepest understandings of the Universe based on phylosophical (love of thinking) and spiritual (intuitive)ideas. But only when modern “science” corroborates these understandings (Dharma) do its priests (scientists) every so mosedtly acknowledge this.

Most definitely, all is ONE. “In a piece of paper can be found the clouds, the rain and the trees,” says Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk who teaches the “InterBeing” of all things.

      Evang, so it is.

      Be well,

    • Oups! Chine = China, obviously–still thinking in French
      mosedtly = modestly–oh well.

  12. i like this theory, but, on the other hand, i am truly convinced that, althoug everybody is one, everyone is individual, too.

  13. For the pre-Socratic philosophers there was an essencial substance called arche, this substance is in everything alive and it’s what makes every creature in the world part of the other.
For me your theory is very similar to this old one.
    Peace, Davey.

  14. we all have physical boundaries-mentally we have none-they are endless.in relationships or even strangers yes there are space and a few limited ones.lets not contradict some things.————–remember the hugging fest in Toronto and elsewhere?now more than ever we need more hugs-times are very tough these days.we should emphasize much more reaching out to more people.if we reached out more we would be more compasionate as a people.especially in u.s.a.very very selfish people-health insurance and big pharma-wheres the compassion?all i see is corporate fascism.and a divide.ive been unemployed since december 2008-healthcare has ended-now in addition to unemployment-im in extension-i must purchase catastrophic health insurance-so now i have even less money to work with.if healthcare reform isnt achieved-then u.s.a.-is forever finished-and hopeless.boundaries?how about less boundaries.

  15. Davey, this is my first comment to you. So hi! The way I see everything alive or any tangible object or matter has a life “so to speak”. Which gives us a sense of being. A pencil is a pencil, a dog is a dog. My thoughts are if I can see you, then you are apart of me. So no boundary there. Then with that said everything I see is apart of me. The same can be taken to the other senses and to the mind as well. The quote “I think there for I am” comes to mind. Boundaries are what everything and everyone brings forth to define “me”. I would like to thing that “me” is all, but boundaries give us that definition of what is “me”.

  16. ONE LOVE ONE LIFE and ONE PLANET!

Yeah starr this blog is representing big tingz! The subject above is deep and spiritual and it helps us all grasp the true interconnectedness of our planet.

I will see you later. Enjoy the ride everybody!

  17. Hey davey, Nice post. thankyou. I too am a lifelong dog care taker. I have had many Doberman Pinshcers.. all rescued, and now a German Short Haired Pointer ( SPCA dog ).

So here is my question my young friend.. How does your one-ness cope when it comes time to say good bye to your (best) friend? It is after all inevitable.. I dont mean to be a cycnical, but i have had to cope many times with this.. Just wondering about your insights.

Thanks for all the thoughtfull post, and fun videos..

  18. Adam Gregory? He looks like one of those pod aliens that have no humanness in their appearance. But then, so do you, Davey!
And when you insinuate oral and anal intercourse in the same piece of expression that talks about the divine “I,” one tends to suspect that your mystical reveries are just as hollow as your reflection in a mirror.

  19. KHW really?? Do you actually think I meant that physics sucks and is bad?? I mean come on. Obviously it is just not my favorite subject and I am not a science. i am sure you have never said “______ SUCKS AND I HATE IT. Never….

  20. Hey Davey,

I would say that’s mostly true. About the last comment. When it comes to life be who you are with no reservations, however live your life by what is right. Some people feel that this a hard thing to do I think because everyone we come into contact with needs to be treated differently. I think though that when you have the ability to look at everyone with out judgement this gives you the ability to treat everyone in the way they need to be treated related to their personal constitution to help everyone to reach that level of being able to also do what is right at all times. Many people will say this is untrue. But I have to say that I know that if the intention is that mentioned in the paragraph above with no selfish endevors involved that this becomes extremely contagious behaviour. It also has to be done with out doubt. Because for much of the population, I know the word exists so the reality of people doubting must be there so make sure that you don’t allow people the psycic possibility of doubt. Cause I think some people might think it exists…….in other words what you think is true so just make sure you think right.

P.S. Sorry for rambling so much!;)

  21. I think I’ve pointed you to my blog before but in case I didn’t, here it is (http://n1spirit.com/blog/).

Previously, my blog entries have been a hodge-podge of whatever I’m thinking about on any given day. Some are rants against what is going on politically; others are more reflective, quieter, representative of the kind of person that I strive to always be but sadly, fall short of on many occasions.

I recently decided to make more of an effort to share entries that are more in tune with why I am “who” I am in this lifetime. This naturally begins with sharing some of my personal feelings about Spirituality. Why am I telling you all of this? Because, after reading this latest blog entry of yours I believe we are very much of similar minds regards Life. I’m sharing my personal opinions, my own philosophy on Life if you want to call it that … as a short series of entries on my blog. Even if you do not care to comment there I would very much appreciate it if you would check it out and let me know if we’re thinking along similar terms. If so then I applaud you for re-remembering and acknowledging the awareness you have
about Life at such a young age.

And as always, I very much enjoy your blogs…

    Keep at it, Davey. Muah!

  23. Davey, you ask:
“What is a boundary?” “…how could we ever intentionally harm another person or creature…?”

    I say:
We shouldn’t intentionally harm another person or creature because we should respect ourselves. My main motto is the Golden Rule: Do to other as you would like them to do to you. So, I don’t harm anybody so they won’t harm me. It doesn’t always work, but I stick to my Rule and let others get what they deserve or ask for.

I don’t harm creatures, dogs, cats, birds, because I love them very much, and I say a pray for every dog and cat I see on the street, that they be well protected and fed and always loved; and that they never be harmed, ever!

My boundaries? I have none. I am an atheist, by that I mean I don’t believe in the traditional god or gods; you know, that guy up there who is white, old, with a long beard and long hair and supposedly all powerful — which I doubt so much and of whom I always ask: How come he took six days to create the planet, the stars and suns, the animals and man and woman, and by the seventh day he had to rest…. How powerful can he be that, after all that work he still needs to rest. Where is all his omnipotent power?

But I am not an atheist that does not believe in a power so great that it creates and takes care of all of us, all of the Universe. And that power is US, each and everyone of us! I believe we create a GRID (I could say that this Grid is my God). God did not create us, WE created God, and he is, like us, flawed, thus all the wars, plagues, disasters, etc. After evolution was completed for intelligent men and women to exist, we were already connected with all other creatures and things on the planet, and the planet was already connected with the Universe. Therefore, when we are born we are connected to one another and to all dogs, cats, birds, elephants, tigers, and every other creature in the Universe, including insects. That connection is the Grid that connects us all and therefore I have no boundaries whatsoever with anybody or anything. But the Golden Rule keeps me (us) from abusing this knowledge and cause chaos in the world. And this lack of boundaries applies to everybody and everything. We are all connected, and what we do to others, whatever minimal it might be, we do to us!

Blessed, protected and loved be Chipotle and all the animals on the planet.
