A few weeks ago, I posted about my new house. In a lot of ways, it was a dream home. Huge windows, open spaces and lots of room to grow. After doing all the necessary paperwork, I was to receive the keys on or before January 31. Yay!
But then the universe intervened.
My contract was contingent on a home inspection and radon test. While the inspection went fine, the radon test turned up dangerously high levels. A second test confirmed the results. As radon – which comes from the breakdown of Uranium – causes cancer, I had a specialist come in to see how the issue could be fixed. To make a long story short, there was no easy or inexpensive resolution.
I’m not one to force a solution on a situation. I took the radon levels as a sign from the universe that it’s not mean to be, and so I cancelled my contract. As beautiful as my new home would be, I’m not willing to make an unwise decision for the sake of owning it.
Because of this mentality, I’m really not sad or disheartened. During moments like these, I remind myself that the universe always unfolds perfectly – even when we have a hard time realizing it.
In the meantime, not closing on the new home opens my schedule up to Plan B. I’ll be heading to New York City again at the end of the month, and then Palm Springs followed by Las Vegas in February. And, as they say, what happens in Vegas, stays on my YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure.

You’ll just find a new, more incredible house =)

I would never buy a property that did not pass the random test. You did the right thing.
The universe was indeed speaking to you on this.

Davey, as a (gay) contractor, I can say you did a fabulous thing by passing on that house!
) and I can come inspect any home you have your sexy eyes on and give our honest assessment.
Now, if you need any professional advice, my partner (in all ways

See, this is why I follow you Davey. I just LOVELOVELOVE your attitude!!
Still trying to learn how to adopt that attitude, still working on it….
And may I add, I feel really good that you found out about it rather than not knowing and me hearing years later that you developed cancer or something awful from that.
VERY good decision, Daveywavey and keep us posted! We’re all in your corner!

Hey davey.
Your plan b statement really could’ t come at a better time. Just twelve hours ago I heared that my plan a for later life will not happen. At first I was very devastated. I was lying awake in bed (It is 2 am in germany) just thinking about it and then i decided to check up on you. Really a huge coincidance. You may have cheered me up a little. I really do have to focus on my other options…
Love

Glad you’re sticking around! Things happen for the better when we don’t even realize it sometimes.

Sorry to hear you won’t be leaving your condo at 81 Allen St in Woonsocket, RI. Well that place has so many memories of that prostrate being massaged. Well at least you can still enjoy your nakedness!
January 10, 2012 at 11:29 pm
you can always come down to florida and live with me for a while until you find a place to live. I make yummy food ^.^
January 11, 2012 at 2:11 am
I’m glad you picked health over lifestyle. Some people would compromise their health and not realize they gave up a better lifestyle for something that looked good.
Peace!

I have never heard of such a thing, but it’s best to find out before having moved in. Still, Ouch!
Clearly, since the universe unfolds perfectly, there is something wondrous awaiting you in New York City, Palm Springs and / or Las Vegas. It could be the home of your dreams. Stranger things have happened.
I’m assuming you, Davey, prescribe to the laws of attraction. If so, I believe you’ll find that perfect, perfect place. I’m certain you have learned much from house hunting, what’s available, what you’re prepared to compromise on, (thanks to your budget), in terms of wants and needs, and more importantly, just what is possible!
Keep saving your funds, don’t go on a gambling splurge in Vegas, and the right home will call out to you.
Chin up young person!

The Universe does not unfold perfectly, come on. I advise you to read Candide (Voltaire) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candide). You are just fortunate to be able to be free, to make choices.
And you made a good choice. Radon is real threat to health not to be underestimated. Working inside a nuclear plant can be much less dangerous than a radon-filled house.
Nonetheless, keeping a positive attitude is important, I give you that.

Davey do a blog buddy meet up in Las Vegas ! Please !

Hi Davey,
Plan B’s can turn out to be so much better than Plan A’s
I speak from experience. It’s happened to me a few times in my life and they always work out for the better.
I have to say though, it’s ok to feel a little down when things first don’t work out. It’s a natural part of who we are. You just have to remember to stick with the positive aspects and just move on. 100% happiness is not exactly a healthy approach to life either. It’s ok to experience all the seasons of our emotions
I’ve never heard of Radon tests. We don’t really have those as standard here in Australia. But now that you’ve brought it to our attention I’ll def get one done when I buy a new place (soon hopefully).
Good luck with your Plan B matey.
Lots of love xx

Hi Jaguar,
I live in Australia also and the only inspections I’ve heard of for houses are termite inspections.

Radon is a gas that can filter up from underneath a house, permeating the foundations. While there are some quickie tests to get a general idea of things, a serious radon test requires about 3 or 4 months, in the cold time of year when you don’t have it opened up as in warm weather. I had one done after I bought my house (the long version), and was quite relieved to not have a problem, but if there had been, there actually are things that can be done to alleviate the problem, so it’s actually not an impossible situation.
Not all sellers will allow the time for even a quick radon test before locking in the contract, so sometimes you have to consider fixing the problem once you’re there, I’m afraid. So it can depend on if it’s a “buyer’s market,” or a “seller’s market.”
One other thing: the pockets of radon gas in the ground are located randomly, hence a house with a severe radon problem can be right next door to one with no problem at all.

When you truly want a thing, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it! I’m sure that this is just one more step on the path to the REAL home of your dreams. Keep up that good attitude!

blog buddy meet-up in Palm Springs?
…think about it, DW.
January 12, 2012 at 7:15 pm
Davey,
You made the right decision. Radon is a greater problem in the Northeast (USA) than in the Southeast. there are ways to mitigate it but they are many times very costly.
Sorry to hear about your condo purchase falling through.
Just remember this: When one door closes, another one always opens up. You will find something else that is even better. I bought a used SLK 230 hardtop convertible. It took 4 months to find one that fit my list of criteria. I looked at close to 100 of them in person and on line before I found the one that fit the bill.
Your dream home is just around the corner waiting for you.
January 14, 2012 at 4:51 pm
Radon is quite common in areas of the country where granite rock formations are present. Anyone planning to purchase a house in the Northeast should have it tested for radon, especially in the basement. It’s a good idea to always have a Plan B for every major decision.

Davey,
This post came before the death of Eric James Borges but how about explaining how the death of yet another young gay person fits with the belief that “the universe always unfolds perfectly”.
Perfectly?
Really?
I don’t buy it.
January 15, 2012 at 4:29 pm
The universe unfolds perfectly; it is this human-habitated planet that is so screwed up. The world would be a better place without religious fanatics like Eric’s mother.
January 30, 2012 at 2:28 am
I wasn’t a sign from the universe. It was a prayer answered by the Perv across from you, who likes to watch you with binoculars.
