Here’s one cream pie that won’t land you in the free clinic – if you know what I mean.
A lot of you asked for the world famous Magnolia Bakery recipe, so here it is. I am only am posting this recipe because it’s amazing! If you do make it, be sure to tell me how you liked it.
suggestion: Make it for a New Year’s Eve Party tomorrow!
Magnolia’s Famous Banana Pudding
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups ice cold water
1 (3.4-ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix (preferably Jell-O brand)
3 cups heavy cream
1 (12-ounce) box Nabisco Nilla Wafers (no substitutions!)
4 cups sliced ripe bananas [Use the kitchen measurement convertor -- LR]In a small bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat together the sweetened condensed milk and water until well combined, about 1 minute. Add the pudding mix and beat well, about 2 minutes more. Cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight, before continuing. It is very important to allow the proper amount of time for the pudding mixture to set.
In a large bowl, on the medium speed of an electric mixer, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the pudding mixture into the whipped cream until well blended and no streaks of pudding remain.
To assemble the dessert, select a large, wide bowl (preferably glass) with a 4-5-quart capacity. Arrange one-third of the wafers to cover the bottom of the bowl, overlapping if necessary, then one-third of the bananas and one-third of the pudding. Repeat the layering twice more, garnishing with additional wafers or wafer crumbs on the top layer of the pudding. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and allow to chill in the refrigerator for 4 hours – or up to 8 hours, but no longer! – before serving.

I lived about 5 blocks from Magnolia’s for years. I grew up in the Northeast and had never tasted Banana Pudding until I had it from Magnolia’s I was hooked from my first spoonful…..
Thanks for the recipe

My mom is possibly the worst cook in the entire world…however, if she ever went anywhere she brought a bowl of her banana pudding and people RAVE about it. She never shared her recipe to anyone, except for me about 2 years ago. People RAVE about mine now…it’s slightly different than the magnolia one — i live in nyc — (and I’ve always liked mine better). I tried your recipe today…no where near as good — delicious — just not my mom’s secret recipe. I loved it, but just thought you’d like to know… and she agrees, the is NO substitution for the Nabiso Nilla Waffers!!!

this is the one i use
2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies
6 to 8 bananas, sliced
2 cups milk
1 (5-ounce) box instant French vanilla pudding
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream
Line the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top.
In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

This sounds like a fun recipe, but I’d need to veganize it for myself & my husband Donn. I think I’d use a block of silken tofu, a pint of vanilla soy creamer, probably 2 or 3 Tb of arrow root powder, 1/2 C raw sugar – not sure what I’ll use instead of the nilla wafers. You say NO SUBSTITUTES but sadly, I don’t think those are vegan. Conversations on the Web say graham crackers work, and a few other cookie types. I’ll find something.
Cheers.

Joe’s recipe is absolutely identical to the one my family has used since I was a little kid. They are both fiercely decadent and mind numbing. Oh, rub my tummy.
