It’s the weekend before Christmas and I’m in New York City. And I’ve never, ever seen this many people in my entire life.
Back in the days of Neanderthal man, thousands of acres of land were required to support each human life. Today, more than 100 humans call each Manhattan acre home. Walking down the impossibly crowded 5th avenue, my inner Neanderthal yearns for some wiggle room.
I sometimes wonder if that’s why there seem to be so many crazy people in NYC. You can’t go half a block without seeing someone talking to street signs or engaged in elaborate monologues with imagined audiences. I also sometimes wonder if they are crazy – or if it’s me. Or maybe all of us. Who am I to judge sanity?
At any rate, New York City is especially magical this time of year – and it’s incredibly fun to be here. Massive crowds and all. Manhattan always has great energy, but there is a special charge in the air during the holidays.
We elbowed our way to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, did some window shopping and walked almost 100 blocks. Even better, I’m sharing in the magic with my boyfriend. Even best, I ate pumpkin flavored frozen yogurt at Pinkberry.
More to come tomorrow – we’re here until Saturday night. Meanwhile, here are a few pictures of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. And if you see me on the streets, be sure to say hi!

P.S. RIGHT NOW: Call 202-224-3121, ask for your Senator, and tell him or her to support the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Tomorrow is the big day!

Salve DW, ho visitato New York per due volte, ma mai durante la stagione Santo Natale per le vacanze. Sembra un sacco di divertimento. Godetevi questo fine settimana.
Italiano dovrebbe arrestare il sciocco discutere.
December 18, 2010 at 12:29 am
why would you write Italian when over half the people on this site don’t understand? :S
Like seriously. Just write English.
December 18, 2010 at 2:38 am
Ah! Ma italiliano e bella lingua por il tempo di Natale!
At rate, I think many of us are gonna get a white Solstice this year to be sure at least in northern latitudes. Merry Merry.
And wouldn’t it be a great holiday gift from Congress if DADT does get repealed. I think there will be a happy group of soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen for sure….

Very beautiful Davey. I wish you and the boyfriend happy and love filled time.
Remember to unleash your inner child and indulge in things your adult side says no to. Its a time of joy so celebrate and let your heart sing.

I went to N.Y. during Christmas and it was so cold that it was difficult to really enjoy the city. So I fly to SF!
And you see even in Italian there’s someone to comment!

Davvi Christmas in Europe is like Christmas at a Cathedral or Museum. Christmas in America is like spending Christmas at a strip mall.
Of course you know what I mean. Not picking on America love it..just no history or culture…no roots…

December 18, 2010 at 11:25 am

December 18, 2010 at 12:41 pm
Hey All,
If you have IE8, just highlight the Italian text in Davide’s post and click on the blue arrow that appears. Then click on “Translate with Live Search” and it will translate Davide’s Italian, or almost any other language, into English or whatever other language you choose.

I find cities wonderfully fascinating places, in part, because they manage to embrace such a wide diversity of people, including those who small communities drive away in intolerance. I’m therefore thrilled that you’re enjoying the energy of NYC again, Davey, and more importantly, that you are sharing it with your boyfriend!! Doubly exciting for you both!! MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and all the BlogBuddies, and Best Wishes for A WONDERFUL, HEALTHY, & HAPPY 2011!!

new york city is magical especially now-Rockefeller Centre looks enchanting-you can have fun in nyc and not even shop-though thats hard this time of year.—-as for those who appreciate europe this time of year-whats not to like.christmas markets throughout the continent are all the rage.they started this in germany-and nations surrounding germany picked up on the tradition.its so popular their its spread to northamerica-japan-even oz.just google christmas market photos-youll see what i mean.toronto has one-chicago has had one for over 15yrs at daley plaza-foot of picasso statue.going back to nyc-take a trip across brooklyn to coney island-thats a future christmas market-if i ever saw one.if not theres always nathans hot dog stand down the street from surf and end of subway line.
December 20, 2010 at 1:48 am
