Memorial Day.

Maybe someday I’ll discover what it’s like to sleep past 5:30AM.

It’s Memorial Day here in the United States, and so we pause to honor those folks who have died while in military service. I think, it’s also a time to reflect on the high cost of war, and for this country to move forward with a more peaceful path and more loving heart.

We’re entering a new era of history, and I hope, strive and works towards a world in which collectively, our consciousness is one of more love than hate. Instead of a world divided, may we see ourselves in everything and everyone around us (including the PGWMCs). Maybe we’re not there yet, but I believe it’s the direction in which we are moving. Like Davey Wavey in a buffet line, nothing can stop us now. :-)

My friend Dan is in Rhode Island from Washington, DC. We’re going to spend the day at one of the beaches, enjoying the unseasonable warmth courtesy of global warming.

Do you celebrate Memorial Day? If so, what are you doing?

  1. I wish we didn’t even have to have a Memorial Day, but reality dictates otherwise. I am going to spend it by myself (like I do every other day) and read and watch it rain here in St. Louis.

  2. i get to go into work today….

  3. Today I will spend the day with my mom and her sister with whom she lives with. We will most likely grill out today and eat salad and enjoy the humid weather.

We are lucky today because yesterday tornados ripped through our county and the county next door to us making it look like a war zone. There are a lot of people without homes and cars. We are lucky that we have our homes and that we are able to celebrate Memorial Day today.

  4. In a couple of hours I will go to the Los Angeles National Cemetery, to visit the grave site of a very close loved-one who died tragically in 1989. I wish all Americans could witness first hand the sea of the flags placed at each gravesite. It’s a moving experience that pales to most others. Then, I’ll get together later this afternoon with 4 friends to have a Memorial Day barbecue; they may or may not be cognizant of this day, other than a holiday, but I will not judge. Peace.

  5. Today I’ll be participating in an annual Memorial Day ceremony down at one of our local parks here in CO. I’ll be playing taps at a memorial down by the river. It’s a pretty cool thing, lots of people and I’m sure with the current war going on, there will be plenty of representatives of those young men and women who are either serving or have lost their lives during this conflict.

I must say that it’s kind of eerie down by the river, playing alone on my horn, taps for the people who have died during military service. Then again, it’s heartening to see so many people gathered together to celebrate all those memories.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Davey and enjoy the beach!

    Ciao – J

  6. A poem to read on Memorial Day.

    I Stand Before You

“I stand before you all today
But not one eye can see my way

My time arrived, to leave this earth
A fact so planned, to every birth

It happened where I had to go
My torch for life was so aglow

    I transferred while in uniform
    Protecting freedom, through a storm

Should I resent I died for you
Not on my life, red white and blue

Please help my family through each day
Tell all my friends, try not to stray

And of the country I did love
Do think of me, through God above

Your memories, brought forth this day
Send love to us, who could not stay”

  7. Giving thanks to those that serve, have served, or gave their all for me and the rest of us; in particular Robert Stethem, navy diver, 06-15-85

  8. I’m remembering the many men and women I served with thru two wars (5 tours od duty in Vietnam and ending my military service flying durning the Gulf War) and 29 years of military service. Sure we all want a world filled with peace and love, but that comes at a cost. Enjoy your day at the beach and your BBq’s and PLEASE remeber those serving around the world just taking their turn in uniform protecting your right to be free.
GOD BLESS OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN and the country we have and our serving. Semper Fidelis

  9. Today with Pride I post my Flags

    The Red, White and Blue for my country and time served in the Navy;

The Rainbow flag for who I am and shall remain.

  10. Evil does not become a scintilla less evil because a person put his or her life in jeopardy to do it and is subsequently designated a hero.Murder decorated with a ribbon is still murder.

  11. Today I am honoring my grandfather who moved on to his next chapter in life several months ago. His name was Wendell Poucher and he enlisted in the Army after Pearl Harbor and served in the Army Air Corps during the European, African, and Middle Eastern Campaign. When I attended his funeral in Connecticut it was with full military complement and it was truly moving. Today on Memorial Day we not only honor those men and women who have died in the line of service but also those who served during their lives.

  12. Today, like every other day, I am praying for peace.

  13. Well, in Denmark we don’t have memorial day, so ofcurse we don’t celebrate it.

  15. Well, just a normal day in Canada.
Go to school, go to the gym, go to bed and waiting for the next day’s comin’.

  16. On Memorial day, in my family we do what i think almost every Mexican american family does on a holiday… we barbecue.

In my case since my family is pretty far away from me i call them up and chat, sometimes i have a drink….not an alcoholic drink cuz im trying to cut down on the sauce, now a days its sparkling water with lemon and a pinch of salt.

Today since its memorial day i just take a moment to thank the Great people who sacrificed their lives for the continuing pursuit of happiness, with liberty and justice for all.

    Good Blog David.
    Stay Cute.

  20. I live in the birthplace of Memorial Day. We have spent the entire weekend with Celebrate Commemorate Festivities, today is the day for most people to spend time with their families, which is what I have done today. And then on Friday we will also have a Memorial Day parade and ceremony in our park, which we have every year on the actual Memorial Day.

  21. Hehe, wellll today was wonderful. I attending a small parade in town, so cute. anddd i went out for lunch, and spent the whole afternoon with my best friend hiking. he took me to a place near the cape, and it was beaufitul. i couldnt ask for more, i hardly have time for my best friend, but today made my day. afterwards, we went to dairy queen from walking off our calories, LOL treated ourselves to some afternoon snack, then headded home to attend a local Fair. hahaha, full of little kids running around and going on rides, LOL too cute, and after the fair, we went to a park near my place and played Tennis!! I certainly showed my friend how I hit balls. Full Force baby. so, i returned home before 6, had dinner, showered, the usual boring stuff i do at home, went online.. and recieved a call from a guy i was currently talking to.. my life turned upside down. he told me no more talking or dating or seeing each other. Oh well, it was his loss. Ugh i hate boys.

  22. I spent my day at the Beach basking in the burning sun, swimming in the muddy gulf, and playing with the many creatures that attached themselves to me in the water…it was fun ^_^

  23. The first principle: avoid killing. Yet we give this only lip service.

We have the largest budget devoted to death of any civilization in history.

We are responsible for Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the firebombings of Europe.

Millions died in wars bringing millions in profits to the military industrial complex that still runs things in America and around the world.

The permanent members of the UN “Security” Council are the world’s largest armament manufacturers. Do they really want Peace? Where will their profits come from?

There are more guns, rage and violence in America than any other place else on earth. More people are in prison per-capita than in any other country.

So please tell me what it is we are supposed to remember on this day?
