The big news!

A few days ago, I hinted at some big news based on my new-found resolution to spend more time cultivating the relationships in my life. I didn’t want to put the carriage before the horse. But the horse has arrived… and so it’s time for the carriage.

In just about four weeks, I’m moving – again.

I’ll be leaving the bitter cold of a New England winter for the bitter cold of Ontario, Canada; Yes, I’m heading back to Toronto. I’ve secured a new apartment in a new neighborhood for the month of March.

I swore that I was done with Toronto, as I wanted to experience something new. But since then, I have experienced something new: I fulfilled my life-long dream of visiting Australia. And now, more than anything, it seems best to spend some time focusing on my relationship with my boyfriend. As he lives in Toronto, we’re going to be spending the month living together.

Our relationship, much like the relationships of just about everyone else, has had its fair share of ups and downs. Especially lately. So we’re both going to take some time to explore our feelings for each other, and see where the month takes us. It’s an investment of time that I’m certainly willing to make.

I’m actually looking forward to heading back to Toronto. And I’m really looking forward to spending some time with the boyfriend. As wonderful as our long-distance relationship is, I’m at the point in my life where I want more than the occasional phone call, instant message or web cam session.

So that is the big news: I’m heading back to Canada. And that means, you are too. :-)

  1. woooo hooo Go Davey!!! Glad to see you’re really trying hard to make that relationship work- and besides, although Chipotle may keep you warm in bed during the cold winter- I’ll bet you’ll feel much warmer with SD in Toronto- see?? It’s a “win-win” situation!

  2. Davey:
Congratulations on your move back home (Your Canadian home)! What neigbourhood are you moving to this time?
    Ken

    • I’d say it’s either North York, The beaches or Etobicoke.

    • Out of the 3, I’d hope for the Beaches. It’s one of my favourite neighbourhoods: such a great sense of community. But all 3 of those are pretty far from DT.

    • I prefer Etobicoke :)
Since Davey likes high rises and comfort, I bet he’s gonna live in North York.

  3. ‘Moving’ implies changing your residence. Are you truly giving up RI residency and emigrating to Canada?

‘… spending the month living together’ implies a month-long visit to Toronto.

Many would consider that an extended visit, and not a change of residence, unless of course you are giving up your RI condo.

    • Indeed. I agree. Davey’s perspective, though, is that of a 26-yo. He stated above that “I fulfilled my life-long dream of visiting Australia.” That “long life” is only 26 yrs. (Actually, not a bad fulfillment regardless.) Note also that he acknowledges that a month in Australia was a visit, not a move. No doubt, Canadian authorities will have a word or two about any potential “move” to Toronto.
Carry on proudly, Davey, and strive to accomplish many lifeling ambitions in a truly long life.

    • I just love to read you “knit-pickers” responses that dont have a life!

    • Brad, boi, that “nit picker”, for your education and enlightenment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitpicking .

    • Your comment was a bit harsh…

  4. YAY!!!!!!!! Its awesome your coming back to CANADA!!

  5. Yes! That is awesome! Good for you! Being with those we love makes all the difference in the world. Love you Davey!

    Daemon

  6. And we will be there!! Every minute our mind will wonder off to you and Scotty!
    Steven

  7. Glad to hear you’re coming back! Although, after Australia, I figure that our weather is gonna be pretty killer for you! Its a huge change, especially with the days we’ve been having lately… hopefully by the time you actually come it will have warmed up a bit!

  8. i hope you stay in toronto ! im going there for school in the fall! :P

  9. Good luck mate. And I hope it’s gonna be more than just a month.
Even a serious Mr Know-All like yourself can learn something new every now and then. It’s not a coincidence most people find long distance relationships difficult and unfulfilling. It’s not coincidence most open relationships end up in tears and heartbreak. Trust your heart – it knows best (even better than the “universe” can you believe?)

  10. That’s the great news I was hoping to read Davey!

  11. YAY

    Have fun!

    Love and Peace

  12. yay:) i was hoping that was the big news! i think you and nick were meant for eachother good luck:)

Good to hear you’re coming to Toronto to live for a month. You suit the beaches, not North York.
Actually have you considered the Danforth area?
It’s in the east and has great food, shops, living and neighborhoods, also the most quickly developing gay neighborhoods in Toronto!
    Yipee!

  15. I knew he was going to do it. Now I wonder if he has done the paperwork to stay… Welcome back to Canada Davey… I hope everything goes well for you.

    Jeremy

  16. Yay, I love Toronto, it’s the best city in Canada, never been there (YET) but I plan to in next few years…

    • I had to laugh that you can call Toronto the best city in Canada without ever having been there. It’s certainly my favourite but I’ve never been to Canada’s other great cities – Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax, Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton – as an adult so it’s hard to compare.

    • I knew it that someone will react about this…

Well, let me explain, I THINK that Toronto is the best city in Canada, cause I only would like to go there and I listened a lot about it… I didn’t express myself correctly…

  17. Congratulations! Great idea! It sounds like you’re both committed to love right now and that’s really beautiful!

  18. Good for you Davey.
I think your heart was in Toronto even while your body was in Sydney. Take it one step at a time. Life is full of opportunities and changes. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
May you and the bf cement your relationship and arrive at a common direction for the both of you. Hopefully, we will hear more about him and for us recent blog readers, maybe he will be in an upcoming talky blog? hint, hint.
    Hugs to you Davey.

  19. Nice! Maybe you will stay there. You’ve traveled so much. Why not make a life with the boyfriend? :)

  20. Sounds to me like you’ve had some time to really consider your values and priorities. I am happy for you. It’s awesome – not only to have you back in Canada with us – but that you’ve chosen to focus on your relationship and see what comes of it.

  21. Best of Luck Davey Wavey! :) You have helped me so much with your blogs, such a true, free spirit! Thank you and keep up the great work!

  22. Yay! I’m so glad you’re coming back to Canada!! T.O has missed you. I’m sure that you’ll find what you’re looking for.

  23. that’s awesome! for a second there I thought you were going to say you moving to Sydney and shacking up with Mitch!

Well done though – commitment is one of life’s most beautiful lessons :)

  24. Hey Davey I want to wish you the best of luck on your move to Toronto cause you only live once so live it to the fullest I say:)

    John

  25. Moving back to Toronto to work ion the relationship is a very mature decision. Just remember that there are no time constraints or deadlines when working through the issues of a relationship. And I do mean issues in the plural. One may be fairly easy to resolve, but another may have multiple parts/facets that are interrelated. They will require a lot of patience, openness, and a willingness to listed to the other person with an open mind. In other words, leave the ego in another room.

  26. I’m glad to see that you are focusing on you relationship. Long distant ones can be awful
strainful (and stressful). We wish you the best of luck, Davey !!

  27. Since you have a knack for packing light, remember to leave “expectations” behind. Take it one day at a time, enjoy it for whatever it is, whatever you may discover, and wherever it may lead . . . And if you need to leave us behind on part of this journey, we will understand. Journey on . . .

  28. Hey Davy!

Been a follower of your youtube videos for a log time, and recently started my own blog.

I would love to be added to your blog roll!

    Let me know!

  31. Dear Davey,

Give the BF a HUG from all of us,

    Peace, Joey

  32. you see what happens to people who visit Canada. they get the Canadian virus. in your case it came with two legs. us Canadians are hard to shake off Davey. why do you think so many Americans move to Canada?
i for one am Canadian, so the bug is in me.
may your month with your boyfriend be stimulating and confirm what is already clear.

    • that Canada bug hit me at 18yrs old.i have the bug-but im stuck in the states.everytime i visit Canada-only confirms what ive known for years-true happiness-is being a Canuck-its in the water i suppose.a bug-its a good virus.

  33. Welcome back to Toronto. I have sensed your longing for your partner as I read your messages from Australia. Thus, I was not surprised to hear your “big news”. I was surprised to discover the numbere of your Canadian friends. I am confident that many people will be blessed by your re-union.

  34. I love your zest and zeal for living life as an adventure!

I had a college boyfriend for about 3 years, surprising me because I was a junior, he a freshman, he seduced me, then I was into older “dudes” and he was a super cute twink ballet major. So much fun. We never lived together, and we broke up as each thought the other wanted out and we didn’t know how to communicate. A sad loss, but opportunities for each of us to explore more and meet others.

At 26, I met my BF. Last month we celebrated our 24th anniversary (married 2 years ago, thank you Massachusetts). We dated for 18 months before he made the huge move from San Francisco to Oakland (lol). It was huge, in the sense that in the gay world, SF was/is everything; Oakland, just in the shadows of Berkeley and SF. But, I cared for my then 96 year-old landlady, so he gave up the Haight-Ashbury apartment for me.

And my college boyfriend? He has been with his hubby for 22 years, they have 3 beautiful daughters with a lesbian couple (also from our college days). And he remains my closest and dearest friend, telling eachother everything, supplying soft shoulders for crying and hugs for encouragement. (My hubby’s ex, and the ex’s new boyfriend, are also very close friends with whom we vacation and spend holidays. They too have been together over 20 years.)

Whatever happens while you go live with your boyfriend is the adventure of your life. Sure its a little scary not knowing which way things will turn out, but there’s an old Hindu thought, adjusted for your situation:

“There is nothing to worry about, either you will find happiness and love or you won’t. If you do, then there is nothing to worry about. And if you don’t, then you will available to find happiness when it comes, so there is nothing to worry about.”

    Enjoy the adventure Davy. Cheers.

  35. I wish you all the best with your guy and in Toronto. It is one of my fav cities! I hope you get to take in all that it has to offer.

  36. A month isn’t very long, took me over 7 years of living with my lover to decide it’d be safe to buy a place together (same for him too)!
A shared mortgage for us was like a cerificate of marriage!!!!!!lol x

  37. Looks like you ditched the carriage and rode the horse bareback.

  38. i just knew this relationship with Scotty would stick.welcome back to TO.after one month who knows-i think this relationship-is going to last.

  39. I’m glad you’re able to see that seeing a different country has made it possible to have a different perspective from within yourself – travel broadens the mind!

    Cheers!

  40. You’ve left sunny, summer-y Aussieland and now you’re coming up to the “Great White North”??

    It must be love!

Congrats to you and Scotty on this step for you both.

    Huggles,

    Gary in NS

  41. Beautiful choice, Davey! I am totally in sync with Love as the glue of the Universe … It will always lead you to the “right” place even though there will likely be sum bumps on the Path …

  42. welcome back — including your announced return to Toronto.

although I don’t always feel up to your incurable optimism, I thought you’d enjoy the following Youtube.

A palindrome reads the same backwards as forward.

This video reads the exact opposite backwards as forward. Not only does it read the opposite, the meaning is the exact opposite.
This is only a 1 minute, 44 second video and it is brilliant. This is a video that was submitted in a contest by a 20-year old.

This video won second place. When they showed it, everyone in the room was awe-struck and broke into spontaneous applause.

  43. Try not only living with SD, but for 6 months or a year (i.e. a long ‘engagement’….AND…very important….do some traveling together. Amazing what you learn about someone when you travel with them.
Best of luck to you, kiddo.

  44. Hey! I am so happy for you! I hope you are happy there Davey. You’re an amazing man and you deserve to be able to settle down and be with your man. So congrats and best of wishes man!

  45. Davey’s coming home!

  46. Davey, working on your relationship with SD is so wonderful. I love and admire you.

  47. If you are keeping score, put my check mark in the ‘good idea’ column.
