Because I enjoy Valentine’s Day so much, I was surprised to find myself at a loss for words when writing today’s blog post.
And then I came across the following quote from my favorite author, Deepak Chopra:
The less you open your heart to others, the more your heart suffers.
While the greeting card and chocolate companies might have us believe that today is about buying gifts, the greatest gift you can give costs nothing at all. That gift is, of course, opening your heart and allowing love to flow through your life.
When you open your heart, you see others as a part of yourself. You feel a deep sense of connection with the world around you. And you find no space in your being for hate or violence. And while the world benefits when you live a life of love, it is you yourself that is the greatest beneficiary.
For many people, today will be about roses, champagne and butt plugs. But I’d encourage you to give and experience something far more radical: Open your heart to the world around you.
Happy Valentine’s Day.

This is perfect! I have been stressing out having a perfect Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend (it’s our first), but you (and Deepak) are so right. It’s more about love than expensive gifts.

Deep, meaningful words there. Thanks for that great post, Davey. Happy Valentine’s xoxo

I was just scanning through today’s post and then I stopped when I saw the following line:
“For many people, today will be about roses, champagne and butt plugs.”
The butt plugs kinda ruined the sentence for me (and I’m gay). However, it put a smile on my face.
You’re all kinds of awesome when you’re not talking about foreskins

@Marcus:
Totally true,Marcus!,especially the part about foreskins;not sure about buttplugs,though.

Davey, I think your blog is a great resource for LGBT people looking for acceptance- it was and has been for me- but Deepak Chopra, really? While I already think that the whole concept of a metaphysical universal oneness is rubbish in itself, I particularly feel that Deepak Chopra is a criminal- even his rite of Buddhism doesn’t accept him for his greed. I am ok with ambition as long as it’s not based on selling someone something that gives known-to-be-false hope as his books do. His book on Jesus (which I read) was poorly informed and would be laughed at by any serious scholar. He promotes forms of medical and spiritual ‘treatment’ that are ineffectual and which actually can harm people. He is a pseudo-theologian and a please-all.

@Chad:
Right,Chad…not sure about doubting the Universe’s Oneness concept:Surely you know about the Dharma Dozen’s ice cream cone order:They wanted one with everything.As for Chopra,I still like Harry Shearer’s version of his name_Deep pocket Shopper.

I love your message very much Davey!! If we open our heart to the world then we will be able to receive a true love!
February 14, 2012 at 1:25 pm
Loving the whole world is much too ambitious for me……and more than a bit meaningless. I am just grateful that my subset of the larger world is filled with love, and my Valentine date for the past 46 years will be my Valentine date again tonight. Unlike several recent Valentine’s days, there won’t be a lunch date with a special man in my life today, but not because my life lack’s romantic male love, fortunately.
“Opening one’s heart” sounds great but is too passive. If you want love in your life, act lovingly to others and you will be rewarded with much love in return.

@seany
Well put, seany. V-D is just another commercial rip-off. Just like all the other fake holidays (mother’s day, father’s day, groundhog day, whatever day) — just an excuse for someone to make a buck. But the excessive sentimentality of V-D puts it really over the top, as far as I am concerned.

@Tony Davis:
I hope that can happen soon for you,Tony.
Your comment reminded me of a mad woman’s line in an old TV drama:”My heart’s in the right chest,but the wrong drawer.”

Hey Davey, “HAPPY V DAY” even though we only share here with you it still is Love. I’ll quote a poet friend of mine: “To have that Passion, that Love of Life, of Friends, of Love, “That Gift” is to be Truly Blessed.”

Thanks Davey for a great reminder to take a breath and let the love in. My and my guy past our 26th anniversary on Feb 1st, but this may not be one of our best years — stress with kids, a long-term unemployed dear friend, work, you name it. Up early this morning trying to catch up on a few things (mostly just my email hamster wheel) — it was a breath of fresh air to read your valentine’s day post. Thank man!

I spent Valentines day with friends, in my living room, playing Dance Central, and Karaoke Revolution, We had a blast, just all of us being together in one place.
