Though I am a graphic designer by trade, it’s always nice to get a new and fresh perspective on things. As such, I worked with an outside firm to develop my new logo. I needed something that could work on many fronts: this blog, my youtube videos, my fitness videos – and even my apparel. I needed something that was fun, versatile (hehe), expressive, simple and me.
I think the new logo does all of that – and more. And I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.
Since you’ll be seeing it here and there, I wanted to share a few things about it.
Most obviously, the new logo is an abstraction of my initials, “DW”. For branding purposes, this made sense. But you might also notice another similarity – the logo is actually derived from the om symbol.
If you’ve ever been to a yoga class or studied Hinduism, you’re probably familiar with chanting, “Ommmmmm”. Om doesn’t have a traditional definition, but this is as good as any:
When we chant Om… it’s as if we’re tuning our own vibration to be able to resonate with the consecrated vibration of the Universe. We invite the deeper experience and awareness of our connection and participation in the whole. Imagine no longer feeling lonely or separate, but knowing you absolutely belong and you are an essential note in the grand symphony of it all!
That is om, and that’s the inspiration for my logo.
Moreover, the logo is fun. I think it’s whimsical and creative and maybe even a little silly. I like that. I’m excited to use it in my work.
And no, the new logo has nothing to do with the countdown on my blog – but good guess! For the record, no one has correctly guessed what the reason for the countdown.
Anyway, do you like the new logo?

July 28, 2010 at 11:24 am
yeah, like the new logo. it has all the swirly goodness that logos need these days.
but DW? no f*****g way.
it reads as “clln”
I wasn trying to figure out why you had the clln initials?
doesn’t read at all as a “dw”
Still, it’s really pretty. And pretty is nice. And nice is good. So yeah, it’s a good logo.
July 28, 2010 at 11:29 am
I love it Davey!
I can see all that you said it derives from!
I think its a modern way of expression in its own form and I love that! you are such an inspiration to us all! I would love a shirt with this on it and under it say “Break the Illusion”
July 28, 2010 at 11:31 am
Honestly davey… when I first saw it I was like “whats CN?” cuz thats the first thing I read. I wouldn’t have seen DW if I didnt read your post, and even so you have to think to much about it.
As a fellow designer I cant say I like this logo. I like the concept, but it doesn’t quiet work imo.
July 28, 2010 at 11:32 am
nope davey, tooo much worldcup.
July 28, 2010 at 11:32 am
It’s so cute, I think I would tattoo it in my back
July 28, 2010 at 11:39 am
Look closely. The blue thing is the “d” and the black thing is the “w”.
July 28, 2010 at 11:46 am
the W is impossible to make out (hehe). i can see the D (hehe) but no W. i think each letter should be contiguous so it’s not confusing.
July 28, 2010 at 11:57 am
Your outside firm screwed you, Davey.
The logo in and of itself is nice enough, but it doesn’t read as the initials dw. Not even a wavey dw.
It is obviously a c with some squigglies and then an n.
Should have done a little more market research before you made a decision.
I hope the designer was at least jacking you off while he f****d you with this logo design. You deserve to get something out of this.
I’d say: LOGO FAIL.
July 28, 2010 at 12:07 pm
Uhmm… actually I like it! Its fun and most importantly it seems like YOU. I do see the DW.
And it would make a great tattoo.. might have to do that!
July 28, 2010 at 12:09 pm
I like your new logo)
If you will incline head to the left you will see sunrise(or sunset).
Just my minds, newer mind)
Sorry, I am just learning English, so excuse my mistakes =)
Greetings from Ukraine.
July 28, 2010 at 12:15 pm
I really like the new logo. It’s simple and effective and really nice to look at.
I absolutely love the colour of it too. xx
July 28, 2010 at 12:17 pm
You know how the Grateful Dead have their ‘dancing bears’? Well now you have your ‘dancing sperm’.
Either that or ‘c i i n’ … pronounced ‘sin’?
July 28, 2010 at 12:17 pm
I saw the ‘dw’ immediately. Near as I can tell, the people who can’t see it simply have no imagination or sense of art.
July 28, 2010 at 12:21 pm
The count down is the end of davey waveys trip to new york
July 28, 2010 at 12:25 pm
Great logo for Cynthia Nixon.
July 28, 2010 at 12:28 pm
i think the count down is for a new job but…anyways
July 28, 2010 at 12:45 pm
Hate to be the odd one out but I liked the old one better SORRY.
July 28, 2010 at 1:29 pm
Ouch, it hurts my eyes. Is it four tadpoles swimming around?
July 28, 2010 at 1:47 pm
I almost like it, I think the “c” and “n” are too far from their respective poles.. can’t tell at all that its a “dw”…
July 28, 2010 at 1:57 pm
I love the new logo!!!!!
July 28, 2010 at 2:15 pm
Hey is the countdown for the unveiling of your iPhone app?
July 28, 2010 at 2:19 pm
Yup. You have to look at the whole thing, not the parts, which works on many levels for our young man here.
Very nicely done! When I read it, and it does read as dw if you look for a moment, the logo made me smile. I’ve been reading your blogs and watching your videos for a while, it seems very you–and that’s a good thing! I hope that it serves you well, Davey. <3
July 28, 2010 at 2:21 pm
Nice catch, Pasha! It does look like a sunrise or sunset.
July 28, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Is the logo the a hint toward your countdown… or am I reading to much into it? Are you unvailing something? What ever it is, I hope to see more, you have helped me a lot. By the way the logo is nice but I too needed help. It is definitly identifiable.
July 28, 2010 at 2:27 pm
As an artist, I love it. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it when I first saw it but after giving it a minute it was easy to see. I grinned. It does look like clln to begin with but the trick is opening your mind and looking for more than the first explanation you see. That’s something we all have to do in life, anyway. If you get stuck on what you first see, you’re only going to get frustrated and disagree with the actual meaning.
I love the colors and the fun look of it. Well done! I want a hoodie with this logo on it!
It also works for a tattoo, but I think you’ve claimed the hearts of enough young men and women across this Country to have their bodies branded with your initials as well.
Doesn’t mean I’m not tempted.
July 28, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Maybe the countdown is for some announcement he’s going to make on next week’s talky blog? Here’s to hoping it’s something awesome!
July 28, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Dammit, now I can’t get “clin” out of my head! Lol. I first saw it as dw…..it was glaringly obvious to me…the artist in me liked that, but the businessman in me thought it was way too obvious and not very creative. but then someone mentioned “Clin” and now I can’t see it as “dw” again. s**t, son!
July 28, 2010 at 2:49 pm
All the negative posters have ruined whatever enjoyment you got out of the logo! D: (I’m being silly.)
July 28, 2010 at 2:58 pm
I do like it, it’s really awesome, I didnt understan it at the very first view but after your explanation I thought that’s amazing!!
July 28, 2010 at 4:04 pm
I actually agree with Heidi. There’s an old saying; “If you’ve nothing good to say, keep your damn mouth shut.” LOL
As for the logo, if you like it that is really all that matters. I too was a bit confused as to what it represented until you explained it in this blog entry.
I see the “dw” — and I also see a wiggling sperm with two lines running cross-wise through it. I didn’t see the “clin” until a few others mentioned it because … well, to be honest, I assumed the first two strokes (in blue) represented something and the last two strokes (in black) represented another.
One thing, however and this is just me being a big of a perfectionist… I think the curves need to be smoothed out somewhat. I’ve worked on it in Illustrator a bit and here is a link (http://quipsnquills.com/wordpress/?p=8244) to the cleaned up logo for you DW. I can send you the vector art upon request, no charge — just contact me with an email address that I can send it to. Use a throwaway addy if you wish; doesn’t matter to me as a I think a person is entitled to their privacy.
BTW, just as an observation, in addition to a sunrise (if you look at it sideways) one can also say that it somewhat represents the “yen and yang.”
@mark: You might try being a little less cynical and bitchy sometime. You’d be amazed at how much more kindly you might be received, were that the case. I don’t think DW’s outside firm “screwed” him; I just think they could have done a better job of polishing up the logo before handing it off to him. In truth, it all comes down to “What DW is happy with and what did ‘he’ tell the firm he wanted, from the outset?” Depending on the guidelines, they may have given him just what he was looking for, in which case they didn’t “screw him” at all … but rather, met their client’s objectives. Try not to be such a pissy drama queen in the future. You might even find that you’ll make more friends that way.
Namaste,
Michael
July 28, 2010 at 4:12 pm
Davey Wavey… I really like the concept, but if you have a mind like me (In the gutter) it looks like an artistic orgasam, like globs of… oh god. I must really have a dirty mind but that’s what I saw. Which may or may not be what you’re looking for.
July 28, 2010 at 4:40 pm
I like it (sort of), but I think it could be improved if it became a more clear “dw”–though the only part I feel needs to be significantly changed is the w–and even then it’s just making it into a single piece (it’s less necessary for the d to be made into a single piece, though it might help to connect the higher part of the “c” to the bottom of the “l”). Just suggestions, trying to say the potential rather than a critique…
July 28, 2010 at 5:09 pm
The logo is.. ehhh, but it definitely doesn’t read ‘dw.’
What I really have a problem with is your logotype though, it’s really bad O_O
I still love you though, I hope you didn’t pay much for this!
July 28, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Its a Fail… Tilt your head to the right to view it…. This is how I first seen it.
Looks like something Chipotle would leave on the rug!!
Sorry Davey Wavey, I don’t feel it….
July 28, 2010 at 5:41 pm
Davey,
AS a creative director with 15+ years in the business I think you’ve succeeded on several fronts but come up a bit short on others.
The general feeling is very loose and relaxed and I think that fits in very well with your style as a whole. I think the colors are balanced and work well together and it would look good on multiple media formats which I think was one of your goals. I think it also looks good on its own or along side your full blog title (although I’m not so keen on the BY DAVEY WAVEY all caps and typeface, starting to feel a bit disjointed with the header above already being in two different sized faces).
I think it comes up a bit short on the DW. I absolutely didn’t see the W as the last bit of the curve is too reminiscent of an N. I think it could be tweaked just a little bit, as I don’t think you want to connect up the curve and tall part of the D completely or you’ll get a much more closed off feeling, so i think if you could make the W a bit more suggestive of a W you’d probably make it with just a tiny tiny bit of tweaking to the curve of the D.
And ignore all the haters, although listen to the constructive opinions. Love the blog, it’s harmless, fun, light, and some good bits of useful health facts and uplifting spirituality.

July 28, 2010 at 7:18 pm
IT works. Now that you explained it, people will identify it now on.
Really like the Om connection….you are so good.
July 28, 2010 at 8:07 pm
I love you and love this logo. Amazing. I always write with slanting strokes, just like your logo.
July 28, 2010 at 9:02 pm
I love the new logo, will it be available on some shirts or something?
July 28, 2010 at 9:03 pm
It has a modern yin/yang feel to it. It’s almost like a new take on a traditional symbol.
July 28, 2010 at 9:10 pm
Mr. Wavey:
Sorry, but you asked. Not trying to be a Davey Downer here, but from the comments you can tell that the logo is a loser. Even the people that like the logo are telling you that it makes sense after you explain it.
If you have to explain it, then the logo isn’t working for you.
Sorry, but that is just how it is.
If your logo is confusing people — and it obviously is — then you need to rethink your branding.
Yes, it is a lovely graphic image. Very nice, actually.
No, it isn’t good branding for YOU.
@Michael. I’m really not concerned about people thinking I am overly bitchy and cynical. Really? That is what motivates you? What people think about you? How f*****g sad you must be.
You obviously didn’t like the logo either — you took it upon yourself to redesign it for Davey. He asked a question about how we liked the new logo and I respect him enough to give an honest answer. I’ve been in this business for over thirty years. Sometimes, you need to lead a client to get them to know what they want. As a designer, you shouldn’t be presenting something that doesn’t work.
And this logo doesn’t work.
Sorry, Davey, but the overwhelming number of comments here should be telling you that.
Mark
July 28, 2010 at 9:18 pm
It’s okay. It looks like two penises rubbing against each other, though.
July 28, 2010 at 9:29 pm
Disappointed! Not distinguished – blah- I would have figured you to be creative and looking for individuality. I’m a designer and if I had a company come up with that for a brand- I would have fired them!
Davey Wavey- you can do better- – do it yourself – don’t use another company to create WHO YOU ARE!!!
Most sincerely
G
July 28, 2010 at 9:37 pm
its very wavey…davey wavey that is
July 28, 2010 at 11:07 pm
I like the new logo. I hope you will consider putting it on T-shirts and/or Hoodies. Could be cute on the “package” of undies too.
July 28, 2010 at 11:10 pm
The W is Wavy like his last name.. think Outside the box….
July 28, 2010 at 11:46 pm
I like it… think i’d like it even more if the w was a dark blue or some other color altogether instead of black. And speaking of OM, you should consider using this album by John Coltrane as your “theme song” : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSeDQ3QWvhg&feature=related, especially the part that starts at about 3:40
.
July 29, 2010 at 12:01 am
Davey,
AS a hobo train rider director with 15+ years in the drifting business I think you’ve succeeded on several fronts but come up a bit short on others.
The general feeling is very loose like a silly Canada goose and relaxed like a school bus yellow caboose. I think the colors are in a stable working relationship with each other (they work well together just look). The colors would look good together at a wedding, political event or shopping together multiple media formats for the colors and their life goals together.
I think….I think……I think your logo is wonderful and mystical Symmetry does not equal beauty and you get that. 15 years of experience as a hobo train rider I get that too. All the downers with their art school credential and gallery experience just can’t recognize true art when they see it.
Love it!
All Aboard!
July 29, 2010 at 1:27 am
For the record I immediately got the DW from it. I think you find what you seek and I expected the new logo to be a stylized DW. Et voila, there it was.
I must say I love MichaelM’s modifications to it – the nearly unchanged one with the bevel and drop-shadow. It’s more refined looking and, if I may say, more polished looking, like making a good thing better.Kudos to MichaelM.
All in all I find it tranquil, fluid and serene; all qualities I associate with you, Davey.
July 29, 2010 at 1:33 am
Nope. Can’t say that I love it or even like it.
The colors work well together. I like the stylized “d”. The problem I see with the stylized “w” is that it just does not work with the “d”.
Perhaps if the two arms of the “W” were the same height or even close it would work much better.
It is true, symmetry does not equal beauty. Art credentials or not, each of us knows what we like and what we don’t. All aboard ? No thanks, I will wait for the next train.
July 29, 2010 at 2:07 am
Sorry but it just does not grab me … I can see a number of things but DW is not one of them.
I like the two colors but that is all …
From my perspective the new logo is a FAIL.
Sorry I just dont like it.
