Though I am a graphic designer by trade, it’s always nice to get a new and fresh perspective on things. As such, I worked with an outside firm to develop my new logo. I needed something that could work on many fronts: this blog, my youtube videos, my fitness videos – and even my apparel. I needed something that was fun, versatile (hehe), expressive, simple and me.
I think the new logo does all of that – and more. And I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.
Since you’ll be seeing it here and there, I wanted to share a few things about it.
Most obviously, the new logo is an abstraction of my initials, “DW”. For branding purposes, this made sense. But you might also notice another similarity – the logo is actually derived from the om symbol.
If you’ve ever been to a yoga class or studied Hinduism, you’re probably familiar with chanting, “Ommmmmm”. Om doesn’t have a traditional definition, but this is as good as any:
When we chant Om… it’s as if we’re tuning our own vibration to be able to resonate with the consecrated vibration of the Universe. We invite the deeper experience and awareness of our connection and participation in the whole. Imagine no longer feeling lonely or separate, but knowing you absolutely belong and you are an essential note in the grand symphony of it all!
That is om, and that’s the inspiration for my logo.
Moreover, the logo is fun. I think it’s whimsical and creative and maybe even a little silly. I like that. I’m excited to use it in my work.
And no, the new logo has nothing to do with the countdown on my blog – but good guess! For the record, no one has correctly guessed what the reason for the countdown.
Anyway, do you like the new logo?

sorry Davey, love the idea of getting a new logo, but doesn’t like this one, to me is too complicated, ununderstandable, not straight to the point as you seem to be or try to, to much input or try in this logo…kind of ok for a first year graphic design student… ( and sorry for my english that sucks )…looks like an ice cream store that open at the corner and would close in 3 months….too much..
July 29, 2010 at 2:54 am
honestly, I didn’t see the DW at all. But I still really liked it, and still do! Now its even cooler! It’s so you dude! <3
July 29, 2010 at 7:40 am
I did get the DW right away, then saw it as 4 sperms (which is okay too.)
I like that the 2 center lines form what looks like a reverse yin-yang, or the ultra-creative “96″ sexual position. It’s very thought provoking.
July 29, 2010 at 7:55 am
I’m with you….I think the old was better. This one offers zero excitement and no remember ability.
July 29, 2010 at 8:08 am
Cryptic nonsense.
July 29, 2010 at 8:28 am
DW it’s your logo and you have to like and live with it. If you are satisfied then I am too.
Love you Davey!

Michael,
You have incredible talent, and a generous spirit too. I really liked your re-working of the logo (and the new options at the bottom even better).
July 29, 2010 at 9:02 am
Excellant. Instant classic.
July 29, 2010 at 9:10 am
sorry, but the new logo does not work at all. hope you didn’t pay the outside firm too much because it was a waste of money.
July 29, 2010 at 9:58 am
I love it!

As a fan of British sci-fi, I can’t help but think of Dr. Who when I see the initials “DW”….
July 29, 2010 at 1:13 pm
Actually, Marty, it isn’t always problematic asking people to comment on a logo. We do it every day here at work. It is, in fact, essential. You design something and it makes sense to you, but you need to know if the design is communicating to other people. Particularly people who aren’t in on the “concept.”
A logo is critical and needs to be able to stand alone without a paragraph explaining what it is supposed to mean.

Forget all the mumbo-jumbo, Hindoo-Buddhist symbolism, the logo is quite nice enough, thank you, on secularist design terms alone.
July 29, 2010 at 3:06 pm
I love it….simple but beautiful.

I’ve been in advertising/promotion/publicity in the television biz for 40 years. If a logo has to be explained, it
a) it inspires creative thought by all who see it,
or
b) it doesn’t work.
or
c) the client’s spouse loved it,
or
d) someone is emotionally invested in it for reasons that have little to do with the logo’s purpose,
or
e) all of the above.
Take your pick.
July 29, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Sorry, Lance, but your option “A” is bullshit.
“[I]t inspires creative thought by all who see it.”
WTF?
Most people are barely capable of a thought, much less a creative one.
NO.
It doesn’t inspire creative thought in all who see it. If a logo has to be explained, it is just a failure.
End of discussion.
Your options B, C and D are right on the money, however.

I think it looks interesting, but since the “DW” is missed by many (most), it doesn’t help with furthering the “Davey Wavey” brand. Really just depends on what you want to get out of it.
July 29, 2010 at 9:34 pm
I think it looks really cool Davey. Kinda like drawn with calligraphy brushes. Nice. (:

Thank you very much. The weekend is almost upon us; I hope you have a really good one, friend.
July 29, 2010 at 11:59 pm
Better than the London 2012 Olympic logo; well done! How long did it take you?
July 30, 2010 at 12:03 am
Thanks, Mosaic Dave. Much appreciated. Hope you have a great weekend, as well. -M

wtf?
who is “d l n”..?
oh, can you design a body for me that looks good naked?
- cheers… d

Hi. I think the most important thing is if you are happy with the results. In life there always will be all kind of opinions. Personally I do’t like it as something that is suppose to tell about Davey Wavey immediately with no explanation though it is a nice combination of forms and colors. I like it just by its shape but sorry I don’t see an W.
July 30, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Hi Davey,
It’s always hard introducing something new, especially a new logo.
For me it doesn’t work. Let me explain why.
It doesn’t show the heart, passion and beauty that is YOU my friend. It’s too ‘corporate’. Maybe it’s the colours? I think softer, more earthy tones (reds, greens, etc) would portray the image that I see as you from your vBlogs and comments.
I’ve had to create my own logo in the past and it’s never as easy as people think. But my baby sister is best critic. She would always say that I was trying too hard and that the logos I came up with were too contrived.
Also, I’d much rather see your smiling face within the heading banner, than just a logo
… The colours in your old banner had much more warmth than this new one.
I hope that wasn’t too harsh, but I had to be honest.
xx EF

I like it. I see the d and the w, but I saw an erect penis first.
July 31, 2010 at 12:21 am
I like the logo and can clearly see the D and W. But there was something about the old logo that I liked, too. The one with you sitting sideways against it. Something this one doesn’t have. It/you conveyed the sense of exploration and wonderment that is so evident in your posts. You have such a positive outlook on life and the new logo, as cool as it is, just doesn’t reflect that.

I love the new logo, Davey. It’s clean, fresh and creative. The sperm-like swimming is homo-erotic! Very cool. DonM

the new logo is awesome! will you start printing them on shirts?? (:
August 2, 2010 at 4:30 pm
as a graphic designer/ DTP-er I have to say no, no, no no no!
I see the DW, but the CN is way clearer!
Logos are supposed to be clear. I understand the message, but there’s another message there that doesn’t have any particular reason. Which makes it unclear.
Contact me if you’d like me to take a stab at designing a logo for you
maybe it’ll inspire you (;

Branding is such an essential part of creating an image in which a community of people can identify with you!
I can definitely see the ambiguity of the logo and how it may be hard to see the “DW” but if you are consistent with it, people will associate it with you and by the nature of repetition it will stick and work. (aka law of attraction, make it work)
Or you could do a redesign again to have something that has more clarity.
I think the color choice is spot on ♥

Yes, it’s hawt
haha, cool at least
August 12, 2010 at 1:57 am
Davey, I’m a graphic designer myself! I love the new logo. It readers “DW” easily to me (or “CLLN” for the uncreative) and encourages a pleasant, fun, and relaxing emotion. Looks great! Love the blog!
