Like a good gay, I was watching the Tyra Show during my lunch break today. The topic was prostitution. I watched as the audience unanimously scolded and scorned the female prostitutes on stage.
It got me thinking.
Some people make money off of singing. Others make money from dancing. I make money from building websites – using my talents and skills. Some people make money by giving advice. These girls made money from sex – the service that they provide. At face value, it’s no different. Like many of us, these girls were charging for a service. Their service just happens to have a lot of stigmas and baggage associated with it.
Hell, in the United States, we even pay people to kill other people in wars around the world in the name of the pursuit of freedom. And we want to criticize someone who is getting paid to provide pleasure to another human being? That just seems a bit fucky, don’t you think?
For some of us, sex is very, very special. It’s saved for a loved one. For other people, sex not necessarily associated with love. People are very different, and there’s no one size fits all approach to sex. It’s important to remember that neither approach is better than the other; the different approaches reflect different collective life experiences.
I wouldn’t make a good prostitute. There aren’t a lot of people with whom I’d want to have sex. Luckily for me, prostitution is not the career path that I’ve chosen. But if someone really wants to be a prostitute – and it’s not done out of desperation or dependency on drugs – then who am I to tell them it’s wrong?
Of course, there are particularly unpleasant aspects of prostitution. It’s a world full of drugs, disease and pimps. Perhaps if prostitution was legal and seen as legitimate in the eyes of Americans, then the industry could be regulated and things would be different. If you take the drugs, disease and pimps out of prostitution, I can’t see why it’s considered “wrong”. I can see why it’s wrong for some people if it doesn’t fit with their values, but I can’t see why it’s wrong for everyone. I think it’s a personal choice.
At any rate, I was put off by the self-righteous audience who, in trying to take the moral high road, walked on the backs of a handful of girls already rejected by society.

August 28, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Even the Church has sponsored prostitution in the past…
August 29, 2008 at 7:02 am
yeah, religion and prostitution had a long way together!
it´s kind of funny, that today it´s not OK to be or
to go to prostitutes.
August 28, 2008 at 7:44 pm
how much would you charge? can I be your first customer?
August 28, 2008 at 8:14 pm
I totally agree with that. Like, I wouldn’t want to be a prostitute, but yeah.
August 28, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Porn would be that kind of completely controlled form of prostitution no? I think money in general is a f****d up system. Being paid for anything nowadays is a form of prostitution and just selling yourself, unless you really didn’t care about the money at all. People should volunteer more.
August 28, 2008 at 8:47 pm
hello
August 28, 2008 at 8:46 pm
I don’t see anything wrong with it at all, if I thought I could earn a half decent living off it then I’m sure I’d consider it with any other vocation. Alas I think I’d have to hit the gym before that day comes.
August 28, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Regulate it and TAX it, same for marijuana.
August 28, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Democrats make the best whores. Its in their blood.
August 28, 2008 at 11:04 pm
That is one stupid statement.
August 29, 2008 at 1:31 am
That’s ’cause they’re the ones who aren’t terrified to death of sex.
September 11, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Disrespectful, rude, and unpatriotic.
August 28, 2008 at 10:08 pm
I agree but I looked at it from a different angle. If the abortion argument for 30+ years has been “My Body, My Choice” why does this not apply for prostitution? I, personally, do not favor abortion except in the most extreme circumstances, but if we all choose what we do to our own bodies and it is not at risk to hurt anyone else…then why not?
And, in reference to blah…I’ll be second customer!!
August 28, 2008 at 10:09 pm
Female prostitution IS legal in Nevada…why not male prostitution though?? America has a history of fearing sex and embracing violence. I agree with Davey completely, What could be more natural than having sex? It should be a beautiful part of any romantic relationship and perhaps if its stigma was abolished, over 50% of marriages wouldn’t end in divorce, maybe men wouldn’t need 50-100 mg of Viagra to get it up, maybe more woman would be vaccinated for the pathaloma virus which would prevent cervical cancer….I’m not a huge Christian, BUT, I do know that the Christian faith believes that Jesus embraced, loved and accepted Mary Magdalene, a prostitute. I’m sure that most of the people in that audience where Christians. 76.5% (159 million) of Americans identify themselves as Christian. If we are going to be a Christian dominated society, then we should maybe practice the ideals that it promotes…i.e., Love and Tolerance.
August 28, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Scholarship has shown that Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute. She was one of Christ’s main disciples. The
Catholic church has perpetrated this myth over centuries in order to discredit Mary
Magdalene, and thereby continue its subjugation of women.
August 28, 2008 at 11:08 pm
Jimmy, I think we have all heard this info on Mary, but is there real data to support this?
August 28, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Even a little investigation will get you the data. The mainline Protestant
churches have never regarded her as such, and she is never identified as
such in the New Testament.
August 29, 2008 at 8:31 pm
you will find no data in the Gospels that Mary is a prostitute. you will find in the Patristic writings (written within the first few centuries of christianity’s birth) that Mary is called the apostle to the apostles.
Mary as a prostitute is unbiblical.
Mary as apostle to the apostles is an historic designationn which can research in any reputable theological seminary. The theology is debatable, but not the fact that early church fathers (Clement, I think) held her as such.
Anything else – marriage with Jesus, having kids with JEsus, are issues which have attached themselves to the aforementioned Gospel accounts and church history citations.
August 29, 2008 at 7:25 am
in germany and many other european countries prostitution
is legal. it´s a normal job with health insurance.
doesn´t matter if you are male or female.
in netherlands you can get sex with a prostitute on
a sickness certificate -lol-
August 28, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Prostitution in Thailand is an accepted norm. Families even “breed” their children to bring fame to their family name as a prostitute.
Why should other countries view it any differently?
August 29, 2008 at 12:30 am
Dez, this is disgusting, that parents force their children into prostitution to satisfy perverted tourists who want children to f**k. I am all into personal freedom, but this is just wrong.
August 29, 2008 at 7:26 am
i totally agree!!!
August 29, 2008 at 7:30 am
i really think, that when it´s about child maltreatment
death penalty is right.
August 29, 2008 at 8:55 am
And those children have no choice. They dont get to know that there
is a different way to live. No child should be given that fate.
August 29, 2008 at 12:46 am
There are so many things that occur in this world, many of which, we as a society of human beings, are not aware. There are so many horrible, sometimes unspeakable travesties, that occur, of which we are aware, and many of us, including myself at times, turn our heads and ignore them. There are countless events and inumerable acts of things that dwell in hate, dismay, chaos, apathy, and senslessness, and yet we do nothing to help, or shift the planet towards the positive.
We all have our opinions, and at times we will express them, either to ourselves or each other, or people that really don’t care, but it seems to help us to be able to express what we feel on any subject at any time.
I start each day, the same, looking at myself in the mirror and realizing that I can only do for myself, live for myself, and for today, and always remember that as long as I am living honestly, loving my fellow person, and making sure that I share what I have, then my portion of the world will be ok. To try and do anymore, worry about anything else, before I’m ready to deal with that, would be futile.
I hope that my two cents are floating around out there somewhere, and that they come back to me as a reminder that I said this, and to keep me in check should my opinion change about life.
Ciao – J

I feel guilty.
I had you pegged as an escort.
“World travel at a young age, flawless looks, always naked,” I thought to myself. “He’s TOTALLY an escort!”
I apologize.
August 29, 2008 at 1:16 am
he may still be, how do we know?
August 29, 2008 at 2:06 am
Well, the society needs scapegoats, whether it’s the prostitutes or music or movies or the gays etc…
August 29, 2008 at 3:07 am
Prostitutes or gays???
ARE YOU FOR REAL?
August 29, 2008 at 3:06 am
Davie…
Like my dad would say, you have the right answer to the wrong question.
In my mind – the right question is, how would you feel about prostitution is it was about someone you cared about..
What if your sister or your mother told you they decided to have sex for money (even as escorts, not actual streetwalkers)? How would you feel then? Would it be OK coz we all do something we’re good at for money, and sister Kylie is really good in the sack?
What if it was your daughter? How would you feel then?
Or your boyfriend… What if Will came to you and said “look, I dont have the bod to do get-fit videos, but people would pay $49.99 for a quickie with me, so how about you do what youre good at and do what Im good at”
I think that’s the question you should ask, and then find out if you are really that accepting.
Then remember – every hooker has parents and siblings and (often) kids who care about them…
August 29, 2008 at 7:49 am
i thought about that. if they do it because it´s their free decision – why not?
A friend – no problem
Relatives – no problem
My sister – no problem
My mother – i would accept it
My child (if i have one) – i can not imagine to have one – if he/she would be happy with it – i would accept it
August 29, 2008 at 8:52 am
I agree with Satei I wouldn’t have a problem with any of them doing it, I feel my greatest problem would be having to consider my mother having sex – its not a pleasant thought. As long as they were doing so in the safest way they could, I wouldn’t try to stop them.
August 29, 2008 at 8:36 pm
this argument can soooo easily be used to restrict the perosnal and civil liberties of others.
similar arguments i remember being used about being gay… the fact of the matter is that i am a middle-aged man in a grood relationship with his mother after having done a great many things she would have had legislature passed against if she had the chance.
and i’m not even talking about drugs or anything like that.
August 29, 2008 at 5:53 am
I wouldn’t choose that career, but I agree that if it were regulated and decriminalized, it might make it better, and why shouldn’t someone do it.
August 29, 2008 at 11:34 am
“Shallow Americans” that what we often here in Europe. And indeed it is a bit like that.
Look, prostitution is the oldest thing on earth. And lucky there is something like that.
There would be more violence in the world if it would not be there. Men (most of them) only think with their c**k. And if c**k says “f**k” but the wife ( or boyfriend) says “no”, where else can the c**k go… correct! To a house of pleasure… Not all of them use there righthand to shake it, so bless all the “fun”girls in the world.
I know that “Church” dictates sex only as procreation not recreation…
We as gay do our very best to procreate as much as we can, pity that off spring is never made….
But hey, this is also something old fashioned and really out of its time.
Come on! lets make love, no war ! Why shouldn’t people have the pleasure of sex, without that “all seeing eye” that forbids it all. we only live once, make the best of it.
As long as you are true to yourself and to your partner.
August 29, 2008 at 11:51 am
Jimmy, what is your general opinion about prostitution? i´m curious
August 29, 2008 at 11:53 am
oh, now i found your general opinion above …
August 29, 2008 at 12:24 pm
I think there is little need for ‘blue laws’ in a free society. We have a competing psyche of Puritanism in the US that wants to maintain order through legislating morality. The existence of organized crime and the black market trade in so called vice would be greatly diminished, and revenue gained through taxation would be beneficial if we legalized pot and the sex trade.
August 29, 2008 at 2:06 pm
You said “I wouldn’t make a good prostitute. There are not a lot of people with whom I’d want to have sex”.
But when you need money or when you are forced to do it by a pimp, you have to have sex with lot of people you don’t specially desire.
De facto,in a certain way,by the number of clients, you become a good prostitute.
I agree that doing the maximum to satisfy the client is something else.
Personnaly, I always do my best (I’m kidding !).
August 29, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I use prostitutes all the time. How else would a fat, stupid, slob ever get laid.
August 29, 2008 at 3:42 pm
what Mike ?
August 29, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Once, I remember have seen a prostitute clothed like a old-fashionned schoolgirl, round glasses, hair in bunches and wearing in her back a school bag.
She still intrigues me, school was over, maybe she missed the bus ?.
But,I still wonder if in that school bag there was not a small whip for later.
Was it my fantasy ?
Who knows ?
August 29, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Well, Davey you’ve got to stop watching trash TV. Try the BBC or some European source. They understand that sex is a necessity and that it has nothing to do with morality or religion or righteousness. Hypocracy and mandacity in America are respected (think Jimmy Swaggart, et al). Paying for sex is no more a moral or legal issue than paying for a colonic drainage or deep tissue massage or a pedicure.
Compare: a doctor, proctologist, sticks a scope up your ass and tells you that you have no cancer, producing delight and relief, with, I stick my c**k or a dildo or my fist up your ass producing intense pleasure and relief, then ask for 100 bucks (cheaper than the proctologist, I bet).
Same same.
Be well,
August 29, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Amen. Selling is legal, and f*****g is legal, so why isn’t selling f*****g legal? Doesn’t make any sense to me, lol.
August 29, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Sorry my english is not very well!
So I speak in chinese.
我知道中国的封建思想比较盛行,such as boys is important then girls.
甚至警察也打击这种职业的,他们认为这是一种犯罪。
September 3, 2008 at 9:32 am
I don’t think there is anything wrong with prostitution. It seems to me that what people choose to do with their bodies is their own business and nobody else’s.
September 6, 2008 at 2:13 pm
prostitution isnt wrong or anything its just a life choice for some people.
September 14, 2008 at 1:47 am
i think you have a good point of view on things and i think your right its just a service but it is wrong when drugs get into it
