Atlanta: Davey’s Weekend in Review.
December 13, 2009 | 29 Comments
I’m enjoying my 3.5 hour layover in North Carolina, and the time seems ripe for a weekend update on my trip to Atlanta.
I flew into A-town on Friday. There was a bit of turbulence on the flight, and despite the convictions of the lady in the seat next to me, we landed safely.
As a side note, I enjoy the surrender of flying. There are situations in our lives over which we have control. And there are situations over which we have no control. Once that plane door closes, my external control ends. There’s nothing I can do to keep that plane in flight. As far as I’m concerned, I can get from point A to point B in complete distress and anxiety (like the lady next to me) – or I can get from point A to point B in a state of relaxation and peace. Choosing distress won’t ensure a safe flight, but it will ensure hair loss, heart disease and insomnia. When I fly, I willingly surrender my external control – but take total responsibility for my internal workings and perspectives.
At any rate, I stayed with my friend Matt and we hit the ground running. We basically ate our way through the city, and took some down time to enjoy the sights and sounds.
The highlight of my trip was an hour long exhibit called Dialogue in the Dark. Each group travels through an entirely dark exhibit, led by a visually impaired or blind guide. Our guide was named JJ, and he was born without sight. We walked through a replicated forest, took a boat ride and traversed a simulated city. Matt and I got hit by a car while trying to cross the imitation intersection.
The tour didn’t make me grateful for my sight so much as it gave me a new appreciation for my other senses. Not being able to use my eyes revealed entirely new dimensions. I don’t think I’ll ever see the world the same way.
I also had my first pedicure, which was almost as equally life-changing. I was certain that the pedicurist would be appalled by my feet – but if she was, she didn’t show it. I was shocked by the amount of dead skin that she was able to exfoliate. I’ve become a believer.
It’s now 7:40 and I’ve been awake for 4 hours. I think I may celebrate the remainder of my layover with a much needed nap. It seems of all the things we did in Atlanta, we forgot something very important: sleep.

I agree with you.
I have a huge fear of flying. My first flight when I was ten I had a bad experience.
I tried so many different ways to get over the fear.
I learned with time it was not about getting over but accepting. Accepting I did not have control and I had to learn to just believe.
Flying has gotten much better now.
Ciao amico, my friend sounds like you had a wonderful time in Atlanta. I think it was sweet and kind that you took the break out of your busy life to spend the weekend with a friend. I do am on an adventure. Last Sunday I left cincinnati to travel to Milan, Italy. My day started at the Cincy airport and had layover in New York. I only had 45 minutes to catch my connection into Munich Germany. As i was rushing thru the airport paying more attention to my blackberry than where i was going i ran face first into a beam. A kind and gentle elderly lady had seen what i done and came over to ask if i was “okay”. After a few moments of brief embarrasment and pain i responded that i was fine. i boarded the flight and was heading to Munich. On my way there i slept and thought about Italy and the excitement of seeing my bf Nicola. The layover was in Munich and I had 5 hour layover till my 30 minute flight into Milan. Landed in Munich, As i was sitting there pondering what i was going to do for the next five hours (it was like 3 am and everything was closed) i received a tap on my shoulder and kiss on my cheek. As i turned to look it was Nicola he had drove to Munich to be with me. He travel about 5 hours and three countries to arrive in Munich. He had brought me a box of candies (that he picked up in switzerland) and flowers (which he picked up in Austria), ofcourse breaking all kinds of laws in doing so. We spend two days in Munich and in enjoyed our time there. On the way to Milan we got lost in Austria as i begged Nicola to pull off autobahn so i could find some peanut butter (Italy no peanut butter, Germany no peanut butter, austria no peanut butter, Switzerland no peanutbutter)but no use. As we crossed into Italy i was glad to be back to my home where i was born and raised till i was 14. I guess in closing its a wonderful thing to visit and reflect on the people who have comed into our lives. And to share “our” time with the people we love.
Just smoke a joint be4 u get on the plane & have a few cocktails on the plane. That’ll fix ur nerves about flying.
not to mention paranoid and drunk

Quote by Hellen Keller:
“Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.”
friend, amazing…i did not know much about hellen keller, now i will learn more. grazie
well the reason there is no peanut butter-it never caught on-Nutella-that peanut-chocolate spread-is Europes answer to peanut butter.peanut butter and jelly-thats typically American. Two day layover in Munich-you should be there when Oktoberfest occurs-Italians love the place.of the huge tents and pavilions-notably two-have a large gay-following.Munich-maybe in Bavaria-but Oktoberfest is truly international-the locals and visitors-make it so.
I love flying! Just the thought that I’m soaring thousands of miles into the air… Awesome. Though it’s not as fun if I don’t get a window seat, or if I’m flying at night. I especially like flying over the Caribbean, the sights from above are just breathtaking.
LOL, I mean thousands of FEET into the air. Not thousands of miles, because then I’d be way past the stratosphere… And dead
air travel used to be fun-sometimes-if you get lucky-it still can be-perhaps.you have to put trust and confidence in that flight crew.ultimately-your life-and that of the passengers-is their responsibility.it also helps to fly a reputable airline-an air carrier of international reputation.if you have the money-you can go first class or business class-sometimes that makes the difference.remember-getting there-is a journey in and of itself.
a window seat is most important for me-flying into Denver-if your lucky-look out the window-you can spot Pikes Peak to the south.after a few days on the Front Range-i did go drive up to the summit of Pikes Peak.after travailing the Colorado Rockies-whether Mt Evans-Longs Peak-Estes Park etc etc-you maybe convinced-that a higher power-created all this.
the journey by auto-Munich to Milan-on the Autobahn and Autostrada-through Bavaria-Switzerland-to Milano-must be stunning.your driving through the heart of the Alps-if your with the right guy-now thats-Amore.p.s.-how did you get lost in Austria?its Autobahn-all the way.
Anxiety eh? I’ve always noticed that some people have an affinity to be more nervous than others, just like any other trait. I have a hard time believing that people would choose to go through bad anxiety, its just something that they have to go through.
I used to be much more calm and collected about many things, especially flying, but as I get older it changes.
I feel like the older I get, the less I understand about these things. Lol
That exhibit sounds very interesting to me. I might have to look into it.
i am very familiar with Nutella…all over Italy. I was born andraised there till i was 14. Did not have my first taste of peanut butter till i moved to Ohio. As for the drive yes we got lost in austria we stopped outside of dorbirn. The autobauhn straddles switzerland and Austia. As for the Octoberfest perhaps but we stayed in the hotel room most of the time
. The airport in munich was clean and modern and the city itsself seemed very clean also. Yes the drive was nice also
Oh. My. God.
If I had known you were going to be here for layover, I would have came to the airport to meet you. I hope that doesn’t sound stalkerish.. lol
Ohh my God… That is the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard anyone do for another person. Your boyfriend sounds amazing! haha. I love my bf too, though. He’s the greatest guy in the world!
Grazie vlee, kind words. but if i share Nicola with you what is left for me? Besides hes not the greatest guy in the world. I am!!!
i misunderstood what you had wrote. oops… i am sure your boyfriend is the greatest guy in the world..well second greatest
DAVEY! : when u wake up, tell us more about ur trip! I’m from Atlanta n haven’t been home
since last xmass. I spend a few days with old friends and c the city. I have seen the bar scene, my growing up there. So I’d like to know what you did and didn’t get to do? What would u like to do if you went for another visit?
Peace Out,
Mike in S. Louisiana
Like Joey above, I also live within a reasonable drive of the airport. Being a regular Blog buddy for several years, I know you would never meet up like that. However, it is fun to think about. You bring us into your world, day in and day out. You enlighten us to different views, thoughts and perspectives. Take us with you on journeys. The fun part to think about is just for a brief moment to be able to share some of the beauty of our lives with you. As one brother in awe of the creations of the universe to another.
Davey is alright guy isnt he?
Flying is so much fun cause you can do nothing and can let your mind go… non-stop
And pedicure is indeed a life-changing experience, and such a treat – if you get hooked up you just can’t stop. Willy slater did her best for a good pedicure too

I have heard that exibit is life altering. How long does it take to go through? I have been
interested in it for awhile.
I’m from holland and we have peanutbutter and chocolatepaste ( nutella, and many others)
it’s not typical american, sorry;)
peanutbutter-jelly is also quite normal:p
NB. Nutella is chocolate and hazelnut (nociolla, noisette) combined not peanut. FYI
I know, that’s why i said peanutbutter ánd chocolatepaste.
2 different things, but we have them both.
got hazelnutpaste with chocolate, such as nutella,
hazelnutpaste without chocolate, peanutbutter made out of peanuts,
with pieces nut or without pieces nut.
Hey all i was doing was searching for Peanut butter. Since I am from Italy I knew i would not find “skippy”, but i didnt know about the other countries I was traveling thru. Nutella is okay, but I sure do love my peanut butter. I put it on everything, hotdogs, hamburgers (gooberburgers), ice cream..ect. I know Im weird. My family thinks so. But my father knows when hes grilling burgers i gotta have the peanut butter. I dont heat much meat, so maybe i need the protein. I dunno I just love it! when i return back to America i am going make me one hell of a huge PB sandwich.
