To be honest, I don’t even know where to start. I suppose the beginning is as good a place as any.
But before I get into my adventures, I just need to say this: New York City is more amazing than I could ever have imagined.
I arrived here yesterday afternoon and spent my first few hours settling in, stocking the fridge, unpacking my s**t and finding a gym. It turns out that gym memberships in New York City are more than most people pay for rent anywhere else. An arm and a leg letter, I found a great – albeit extremely crowded – gym that serves the purpose.
My luck didn’t extend to my dog, Chipotle, who was hard-pressed to find a patch of grass in this concrete jungle (she won’t pee on sidewalks – she’s classy). After asking around, we located a 5 foot by 10 foot square of half-dead grass four blocks from my apartment.
Last night, I met up with another Rhode-Islander-turned-New-Yorker named Matt Maggiacomo (he’s adorable) that works at OurScene TV. We’re going to do a filthy talky blog together, and I couldn’t be more excited.
I didn’t get home from dinner until 11PM, and I wasn’t in bed before midnight. With so much energy and excitement in the city, I found it hard to sleep.
Not surprisingly, I was still up with the sun. And after an amazing workout (I used one of those “endless” swimming pools with a current), I leashed up Chipotle in search of greener pastures. We walked through block after block of business people heading to work (a number of them stopped to pet Chipotle and chat – I’m convinced that New Yorkers are much friendlier than their reputation might imply), and we eventually stumbled into Central Park.

With 26,000 trees and 23 dog parks, Central Park may just be doggie heaven. Chipotle was a bit too nervous to make new friends, but she did do some ass-sniffing and other formalities. Though NYC is undoubtedly fast-paced and hectic, Central Park is the eye of the hurricane. It is calm among the chaos, and it is a welcomed oasis for country bumpkins like me.
We sat on the grass next to a pond, soaking in the paradox around us: Beautiful nature pressed up against massive structures of concrete, glass and steel. What a place.

I think the best part of my trip is knowing that today isn’t going to be a carbon copy of my yesterdays. Our routines – at least in my opinion – do have a certain suffocating characteristic. It’s nice to break free, every now and then.
We grow when we step into the unknown, and it looks like I’ll be doing lots of growing over the next two months.
I really wish you were here to experience the magic.

So glad you brought Chipotle. That is not a pond it is ‘The Pond’. : ) For all of it’s beauty Central Park is nearly entirely manmade all of the water features are controlled. If you find time try the Conservatory Garden at 105th and 5th.

WoW! Sounds great, I’m coming form Scotland to go their soon! Can’t wait. Nice to hear Chipotle was getin’ some action LOL

Welcome to my home! Here’s a tip: The Penguin House in the Central Park Zoo is the coldest place in Manhattan. If you get to the point where you can’t take the heat … that’s the solution.
June 2, 2010 at 10:16 am
Ah! NYC in the summer. Good decision DW!
June 2, 2010 at 10:31 am
Davey, welcome to New York City. Manhattan isn’t half bad, but don’t forget Brooklyn… or one of those other, lesser boroughs. ;o) (yeah, I’m a Brooklynite, born and raised)
June 2, 2010 at 10:44 am
New Yorkers ARE much nicer than their reputation.. it is the BRIDGE and TUNNEL people who spend three hours a day commuting to their shitty jobs who are mean and nasty. The people who live in NYC are great.
June 2, 2010 at 10:48 am
Welcome again….so much stuff going on here in June….I live on Christopher St in the village…have you been down here yet…would love to show you around..

Chipotle looks pretty happy.

Love visiting NYC. Was just there in May – I just love roaming the steets, talking to bartenders when I pause for refreshment, and going to shows. I encourage you to take in one. If you like Green Day’s music, American Idiot with cute boys John Gallagher, Jr. and Stark Sands is something to see. High energy! Modern – angsty! Next Fall – play re: faith vs. atheism told in context of gay couple, one a believer and one not. Off Broadway – 39 Steps if you’re a hitchcock fan. I also love Million Dollar Quartet – not for the musical but for Levi Kreis – uber talented, out gay man, independent recording artist, and Tony nominated. broadwaybox.com for discount tickets! Won’t have to wait in line at TKTS.

You found my most favorite spot on earth – Central Park. I love your take on the place. I hope the park and the city provide you all that you seek from it and more.
June 2, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Welcome to our fair city, Davey.
I promote a bunch of parties – if you’re the party type, I’ll be happy to get you VIP entry and free drinks and all that.
I’m sure you’ll have no trouble making buds, but if you’d like one or two more, my b/f and I live in Hell’s Kitchen and would love to meet up with you.

Not trying to plug it, but if you’re around for it you should totally go to the GUMBO (Gays in DUMBO–a small section of Brooklyn near the Brooklyn Bridge) party. It’d totally be great to see you along with other awesome people.

NYC! One of the great cities of the world. Enjoy.
June 2, 2010 at 7:04 pm
..guess it really is the city that never sleeps.
June 2, 2010 at 9:35 pm
Welcome to NYC. Summer in the city should be fun. I work in NJ and thus split my time between the country and the city, the best of both worlds. Enjoy! Randy
June 2, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Davey,
Enjoy NYC! Looks like you are off to a good start. Don’t forget to meet up with Ben and Dave (from the “sixpack). I would love to see those pictures.
June 3, 2010 at 1:30 am
wow i think you reall enjoy every single place you go and everytime you just bring out the beauty of that place i just love the way you do it davey
June 3, 2010 at 3:33 am
Hey Davey,
Isn’t it strange how we can be in the same place in three out of four dimensions, and yet have that bitch of a last one ruin it? I was in Bondi beach just 2 days after you left, and now I’m coming to New York on the weekend, but you’ll probably be gone by then. In the majority of the dimensions we get to live in, we’re in the same spot- but if just one of them is off slightly, then you can’t even meet a person. Isn’t the universe funny?
June 3, 2010 at 5:22 am
Davey,
Go see a Broadway show! La Cage maybe? Or Hair?
June 3, 2010 at 5:48 am
I going to New York next month. I hope I will see you..

I love New York. I lived there once and it’s magical for sure. There’s no place like it but watch out for those bridge underpasses. They’re a favorite place for muggers. Ask me how I know. lol
June 3, 2010 at 6:36 am
Welcome, Davey! i hope your stay here is as enjoyable as it can be.
June 3, 2010 at 7:39 am
And don’t forget your New Jersey friends! I live in Jersey City (the sixth borough of New York). Here we have a bit more solitude and all the views of Manhattan. NYC is an amazing place and I’m there every day.
And, Davey, if you want to do something really good, come visit us at Silvia’s Place on W. 36th. It is a homeless shelter for gay youth (16-24 years). You could have a good deal of influence on them. I am the volunteer chef there Tuesday nights. Come! I, too, would love to meet you.

As a former Brooklyn boy I am delighted that you find central NYC so exciting.
Remember you are in a city of 9 million; counting the surrounding megalopolis from Boston to Washington you’re in the greatest concentration of folks in North America.
Of course it’s exciting, at the outset.
Now take the subway to Brooklyn and then to Queens. You will see the real New York, the working class neighborhoods, teaming with immigrants and kids trying to get cooled off under fire hydrants they (illegally) open to get some semblance of that hyper expensive endless current swimming pool you so enjoyed.
Nice to have Central Park a short walk away. Try to find a park in Bedford-Styvesant, Brooklyn. You might find an empty lot overgrown with weeds to hide the trash. Look into the eyes of the kids you see in those neighborhoods. You will see why I no longer live there.
Up-town Manhattan is NOT New York.
Enjoy.
Be well,
June 3, 2010 at 11:16 am

June 3, 2010 at 12:17 pm
You were wrong about Matt being “cute”. He’s absolutely gorgeous. Can’t wait for your talky blog with him.
June 3, 2010 at 12:20 pm
Congrats on the move! I just graduated college and my plan is to find a career and move to NYC.
I hope you do more blogs about life in the city, I would be very interested to see what day-to-day life is like in the big apple!

I know the exhilaration that you find in New York City, Davey. Big cities do this for one. Chicago, Naples, Athens, and Istanbul do it most for me! New York City does it for you. I spent more years living in big cities, Boston and Montréal, than in any other places. However, I really do think that big cities are for the young. A young guy who does not long to dive into the exciting and variegated life of a place like Montréal, New York, Chicago, or Kansas City, is just lacking in sheer male vitality!
However, these big cities and others like them take a toll on one. Ageing in such places is not a good thing. What it takes to thrive in these big cities is what starts to go lacking as the body (not the mind!) ages. Now I live in a much smaller place, Rouyn-Noranda (QC) one that is pretty, interesting, and with enough to hold one’s interest (though not the sheer super-abundance of Boston or New York City, but at this age, what Rouyn-Noranda has to offer is more than enough). I have more friends in the 5 years that I have been here than I had during 20 years in Montréal! That’s the down-side of big cities: they are impersonal, even if only relatively so. My friends in this pretty town are interesting and very lively; being closer to nature invigourates life (and nature is not always about to intrude on the urban scene itself, as “urban bears” and city-coyotes are in a place like this) and that adds a lot of charm.
Well, Providence is a big city, but not at all the most exciting one of cities of equal size. Anyway, enjoy this while you are so young, and strong, and beautiful, Davey!
June 3, 2010 at 9:07 pm
ahhh New York New York, you so have to check out this cafe/restaurant on corner of Mott and prince street. Cafe is called ‘gitane’.
June 3, 2010 at 9:19 pm
I was in the city last week, found the packed sidewalks particularly exhilarating! Full of people, many of whom are beautiful.
I spent most of my time seeing old friends, but found the Picasso Show at the MET particularly exciting! Arrivre at 9:30 am so that you have unobstructed views of the art, and make sure you see the linoleum block prints—they are fantastic!
June 3, 2010 at 9:56 pm
I’m visiting New York as well. I’m in Montauk until Sunday night. I love it out here!
June 4, 2010 at 10:15 am
Man – I’ve just looked into universities in the states for me in a couple years … I plan on going to The University of Maryland, College Park – only like 4hrs from Newyork!!! So maybe one day I will visit NY!!
June 4, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Oh, but I AM here! Haha. If you’re ever going to have some sort of autograph, blog-buddy meet-up, I’m totally there. Even if I’m the youngest female to show up.
Welcome to the Big Apple. I know you’ll enjoy your stay :].

What a wonderful experience. Going to NYC is one of my biggest goals in life. I think it’s an amazing place. And the moving itself is so cool. Starting over once again, stepping into a totally new life.
