Day 4 of the “30-Day Blog Challenge” calls for a photo of somewhere you’ve been.
Back in 2007, in what now feels like a past life, I joined a large contingent of LGBTQ families to “crash” George W. Bush’s annual White House Easter Egg Roll.
The previous year (back in 2006), a “last minute change” in ticketing procedure prevented many gay families from attending the event – and a perhaps awkward photo-op with a rather gay-unfriendly president. LGBTQ families had camped out over night to secure the tickets, and the ensuing controversy was a publicity home-run for my former employer, Family Equality Council (formerly Family Pride Coalition). National media covered the story, and a huge amount of awareness was raised for the hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ families across the country.
2007 was much quieter. LGBTQ families were able to secure tickets, though the president and first lady didn’t make any appearances. In a sign of solidarity and to increase our visibility, the LGBTQ families in attendance wore rainbow leis. Otherwise, we all blended right in… no one seemed to notice the two mommy, two daddy, transgender or gender-queer parented families.
And with Barack Obama in office, LGBTQ families received a special invitation to last year’s event – representing an enormous change from the previous administration.
But there you have it: A picture of somewhere that I have been. The lawn of the White House.

I’m doing something far more narcissistic for the new year. A self-portrait a day for one full year. Who else is gonna do it?

DW,
Great photo, I have never been inside White House grounds…not yet.
Actually the rainbow colors are a Christian symbol…the rainbow has been a Christian symbol for hundreds of years means ‘peace’ God’s covenant with man..bootlegged by gay ‘rights’ activist of the 1970′s…. maybe brain dead Bush thought you guys were Christians…
Any case I never felt Bush was not ‘gay friendly’ maybe not gay ‘advocacy’ friendly..but neither am I…but at least you didn’t call him a homophobe…a word over used and over played by gay ‘rights activist’.
…I know I am an “Uncle Tom” and a “self loathing” gay…aka a monster…but been called worse…
I do support your right to appeal to the cause, even if I am not a supporter of such cause. Whatever the law of the land is..I’m good…
Anyways great pic of handsome folk…looked fun…

If someone could explain why transgender folk are grouped with gays I would like to know..considering transgender is gender orientation not sexual orientation and many transgender’s are straight folk..
never got it but would love to hear a valid explanation…thanks..
