When I was little, I wanted to be an architect. I worked tirelessly toward the fulfillment of that dream. Yet, the universe had a different plan for me; my dream went unrealized. It wasn’t meant to be. And today, I’m thankful. I recognize that my current path is much freer, open and fulfilling. I’m glad that I didn’t manifest my dream.
On one hand, I have a set of desires. There are certain things that I want to do with my summer, my talents and my life. I have a plan that I work to manifest.
On the other hand, I recognize that I don’t always get what I want (and things still always seem to work out for the best). In the tug-of-war of life, the universe always wins. The universe has a plan that will manifest, regardless of my efforts.
So, the ultimate questions become: “Why should I spend my energy trying to fulfill my desires? If the universe has an unavoidable plan for me, then shouldn’t I just stop trying and stop planning?”
The answer is, “No”. We shouldn’t stop trying and we shouldn’t stop planning. We should continue to spend our energy trying to manifest our desires.
But why?
As we become more and more conscious and awake, our desires fall into alignment with the “desires” of the universe. What we want, the universe wants.
And thus, we should always work towards the manifestation of our dreams.
So dream, create and enjoy.

But in all seriousness, one of the keys to happiness is shedding attachment for what we want. That’s not to say don’t want for things – do so with abandon if you must – but don’t be attached to having those wants satisfied or actualized. Sometimes the universe definitely has other plans that will be equally stimulating or fulfilling. Many of us are so blinded by our own egoes that we fail to see what’s out there beyond our wants and so we curse the universe for not providing us with those things we desire. And thus is born envy, resentment and many other emotions that are, for the most part, not helpful.
It’s funny, when I first read this post I thought ‘God, that was a snoozer. I could have written that in my sleep.’ Then I got over my own ego and realized that this wasn’t written for me. I am fortunate to be in the place where I am in life. It hasn’t happened the way I would have planned it but giving up my resistance to things not being the way I want them to be (in the past couple of years) has taken me to some amazing places.
Life is good.

I always love to learn your ideas, thoughts, and viewpoints. Based on what I know of astrophysics, it does not appear the universe has a plan at all. The evolution of life on our planet is an amazing cosmic coincidence –” a way for the universe to know itself” (Carl Sagan)
We r wonderful and amazing creatures and we should all be awed by what 14 billion years of cosmic history has wrought WITHOUT any plan at ALL!!! Absolutely amazing!!!

Unless off course… nothing is a coincidence?

Sorry, but that’s just a re-wording of Christian doctrine.
Really. Think about it.

You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

I love this. I’m working night shifts at the moment which is tough because the weather has been AMAZING. My desire to spend all day in the sunshine is in conflict with the reality that I need sleep. Because I can’t take enjoying the weather for granted, I’m enjoying it more when I can get out. Also. there is much pleasure to be had in the anticipation. The sea is beautiful… I’m off for a swim!!

Aah! Freaken awesome said, Davey! I believe that it is extremely important to dream and have big goals in life. You should not only imagine yourself achieving these dreams, you must also believe that they will come true. We only need to do the natural, and Jesus Christ will do the super. And when you open your eyes, the supernatural takes place- even better than you have imagined. Thanks for all the great thougts, Davey. You are another dream came true. Blessings! X

Dreams serve multiple purposes. They give our lives direction. They allow us to pursue our highest ideals. The nice thing about dreams is that they are not carved in stone. If you decide one day that the dream you are pursuing is no longer the one you want to pursue, you can dream a different dream and let the new one guide you.
Does the universe have a say in whether your dream comes true or not ? I think the jury is out on that one. There are many whose dreams come true relatively quickly, still others have to wait decades and overcome unbelievable odds to make a dream come true and yet other dreams were dashed right out of the starting gate.
Would that indicate that the universe is capricious or cruel or caring or indifferent ? I think the jury is still out on that one too.

David,
I’m entirely convinced that we must keep on dreaming. Above all, we must never give up or stop to hope the best for us. Simply because I do believe that a large part of the plan the universe has for each of us is clearly written in the choices we will daily make in our life.

“A man is not truly old, until regrets replace his dreams.” Barrymore, I think.
Anyway, my Daddy used to tell me that, too. Dad was a rocket scientist during the cold war for the DoD, he could never talk about what he did for a living, other than that he worked for one of the largest Defense Contractors in the Country. Dad died in 2005, he was really hard to know, but I really miss him =)
