I’ve received a number of e-mails from people asking me where the nickname “Davey Wavey” comes from. Well, my first name is David – and so, that accounts for the Davey. But what about Wavey? Here are a few possibilities.
Perhaps it’s because life is like a wave. Much like a human life, a wave is short lived. And yet, it’s part of a larger whole. I once heard a story about a scared wave, terrified as it approached a rocky coast. It was certain that the end was near. But then, a second wave notices the first wave’s concern, and says, “You don’t understand. You’re not a wave, you’re part of the ocean.” So, too, are we part of something much greater. As life is like a wave, perhaps the name “Wavey” is to serve as a reminder.
Or perhaps it’s a nod to wave-particle duality in physics, and the famous double slit experiment. Energy exists as both a wave and a particle – sometimes referred to as a “waveicle” – until you add an observer into the equation. Once energy is observed, the waveicle collapses into either a wave or a particle. The implication is that the observer, simply by observing, is playing a very real role in creating his or her world. It’s an idea that resonates with me, and is well deserving of my surname.
Or maybe it’s because my parents enjoyed calling me Davey, and Wavey simply ryhmed and sounded better than the alternatives. Davey Zavey, Davey Cavey and Davey Lavey all lack a certain something. Davey Wavey just seems to work, and perhaps this nickname has managed to survived the decades.
Or maybe it’s something else. I leave it to you to draw your own conclusions.

I’m thinking the last suggestion is probably right, and the other reasons exist retroactively.

maybe like a wave one gestures with his hands. Saying hello or goodbye…
Davey likes to Wavey.

August 26, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I’m hanging on your every word for the answer. Only you, David, knows the answer!
Question :

I think the last idea was right. Your name is really easy to rhyme. Mine on the other hand isn’t…Julian..Wulian?…that just sounds stupid, lol
btw you should add track jackets to your line of clothes, with one of your peace and love slogans or the peace sign. I would buy it! (btw I’m sooooo not trying to tell you what to do with your clothing line! it’s your clothes! just a friendly suggestion.)
August 27, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Julian Bullion??
August 26, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I’m going with the rhyming theory but you certainly have put a lot of thought into the greater implications of your Wavey-ness.
When I was in middle school I tagged my friend David with the name Dildo Dave. He appropiately retalliated with a nickname for me, Sticky Ricky.
August 26, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Its ironic this should come up. After watching so many of your videos, I just assumed the nickname was based on your (enduring) habit of waving your hands about when you speak. Its a great nickname.
August 27, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I think you meant “endearing”. I bet he did that waving thing as a child and his family started callin him Davey Wavvey.
August 26, 2009 at 7:53 pm
I enjoyed your explanation of how a “waveicle” is transformed by the observer, and how it shows that we have a real part in creating our world. Even by passive observation. Our view point is more powerful than we realize.
I like to think that since the universe is constantly expanding, and we are part of the universe, and that we have a degree of intelligence that there is therefore intelligence in the universe and what we add to creation helps the expansion of the universe to become more of what we each add to it. Love, peace, understanding, knowledge, compassion, order, beauty… or the opposite, chaos etc. I want the universe to expand in all the best things.
No matter how you ended up with your nickname it’s cute. Mine is Marquee Mark… not sure how it all came about either.
August 27, 2009 at 11:23 am
hi there my name is also mark. some times people call me marky mark but i never would have spelled it marquee. that is very creative lol
August 27, 2009 at 2:50 pm
This theory would help explain why, since the explosion of vicious, nasty talk radio, the world (universe) has become a less loving place.
August 26, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Well no matter the reason behind your nickname, its totally memorable. Either that or your undying exuberance, and almost unnaturall peppyness.
August 27, 2009 at 12:21 am
…sounds good to me no matter the etymology…
Ciao!

Wave particle duality rocks my world.
Keep it up Davey Wavey wherever your name comes from!
August 27, 2009 at 3:26 am
Wave’s existence is dependent on a perpetual reality. I hope that Davey Wavey is but the same. I can dream. “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to.” Leslie Gore.
August 27, 2009 at 6:18 am
You are a blessed being Davey Wavey. No need to explain who you are.
August 27, 2009 at 7:20 am
Have you heard of Wavey Gravy?
August 27, 2009 at 8:20 am
first explanation seems to make the most sense-i will buy that.
August 27, 2009 at 9:09 am
yeah, i think it was the last one. nice flight of fancy though. my name rhymes with too many things. some undesirable.
August 27, 2009 at 9:33 am
I don’t wonder why you’ve got a man you’ve become involved with – you’re cute and you’re smart.
I agree, just because someone can’t explain “why” a brain works, but can explain the process of how it works, leaving much more to be discovered with theory’s of evolution and creationism leading to the question of our purpose; one of which is to enjoy the journey and the company of people we can be enlightened and with the ‘now’ of our existence and not worried about future happiness, but enjoy it.
August 27, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Note: “Evolution” is an established, proven scientific principle supported by nearly every kind of scientific discipline on the planet (and probably beyond.) It is one of the cardinal and critical facts of life on Earth. That is what ‘theory’ means in the world of science. (And “science” means that it will always be explored further, questioned, investigated.) “Creationism” is a belief. There is no science to support it. One does not question a belief. One simply accepts it as truth because someone says it is so. Creationism ranks right up there with The Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, and the Tooth Fairy. Now whether or not there is a god or supreme being which invented Evolution….that is a question for theologians to ponder.
August 27, 2009 at 7:05 pm
oops….make that Santa Claus (no ‘e’)
August 27, 2009 at 9:44 am
Maybe you also waved to Sen. Kenndy, goodbye, Long Live Sen Kenndy………
August 27, 2009 at 10:02 am
Hm…
I have a question to the first explication:
What does the ocean stand for? You said that “we are part of something much greater”
What do you mean by that?
August 27, 2009 at 5:23 pm
Now you’ve raised the Ultimate Question About Life, The Universe, And Everything: Can a wavicle and a fudgicle exist at the same time, and if you taste one, does the other one disappear?
August 27, 2009 at 7:08 pm
I looked up ‘fudgicle’ and there’s no such thing, so it could not exist at the same time as a wavicle. Perhaps a Fudgsicle could, though. But in today’s global warming (110 here in Van Nuys, CA) it would probably melt, and exist in a different form.
August 28, 2009 at 11:34 am
Going into this, I knew that anyone who doesn’t follow the Wavey One’s Tweets would not quite understand this. Sorry about that. His Tweets are getting more interesting and more fun (the photos of the Wavicle eating a Fudgsicle are hilarious), and I encourage everyone to become a follower.
I found the misspelling on the reader comments to Davey’s Tweet about Fudgsicles. Since I’m fond of puns, I put that together with his discussion of wavicles on his blog. In that vein, if you looked up (observed) the word fudgsicle, I suppose the Fudgsicle would cease to exist. Ah…totally pedantic particle physics punditry and postulating that only a former professor could love — and my field is music! LOL
August 27, 2009 at 10:42 pm
those are some interesting thoughts.
I just assumed Davey Wavey had to do with your sexual orientation. Since you’re not straight, you must be wavey.
Just a thought haha

This is my rhyme that my family tormented me with as a young teenager. Now, it just makes me laugh, because the truth behind the goofy rhymes is just love and admiration.
davy, the baby
joined the navy,
ate some gravy,
and got wavy hair
My Aunt Deby and my little brother Brad came up with this on our return trip from Warsaw in 1977. I had to listen to this on a 8 hour flight on BOAC. Then an 8 hour drive in our grandparent’s Buick Electra 225 (don’t know why that is important, I just remember it well-probably really liked the car and what it meant to my Grandfather-God rest his soul). I came up with rhymes for both of them, but they never took hold in the family. I guess I’m still Mr. Popular in the family, even if I’m the black sheep and a big mo. And dying. Slowly.
