I have a confession to make.
Though I’m a big fan of the gay meet up website manhunt.net (I think it can be a powerful and honest tool in connecting with other gay or bisexual men), I’ve found a way to beat the system and avoid paying for the service. Admittedly, manhunt.net has connected me to some of my best friends, and for that, I’m thankful. As such, I’ve always felt guilty cheating the system.
As it turns out, you can do a Google search for “manhunt promotional codes”. Those promotional codes can then be used at www.manhunt.net/promo to get the service for free.
It’s been years since I’ve paid for manhunt. And the guilt has been building…
This morning, a friend sent me an article claiming that the owner of manhunt.net contributed $2300 (the maximum allowed donation) to the McCain campaign. The Republicans, in case you’ve been living under a rock or aren’t from the USA, aren’t too keen on LGBT equality.
I realize that when I click on an ad on MySpace, I’m contributing to the ultraconservative Murdoch Empire. Likewise, when I order a pizza from Dominos, I’m making its founder, the radically conservative and anti-gay Thomas Monaghan, that much richer. But when a member of our own community supports a platform that is against our community, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended).
Sure, two wrongs don’t make a right. But knowing that Manhunt.net’s owner is contributing to McCain’s campaign makes me feel a bit better about ripping him off.
