On the road again!

Packing my life into two suitcases has become one of my favorite pastimes. And “on the road again” has become one of my most frequented mantras.

Early tomorrow morning, I’ll hit the road and move from Toronto (I hope you had fun with me in Canada!) to Rhode Island. I’ll probably tweet along the way, so make sure you follow me. I’ll be in Rhode Island for a few short months, and then I’ll be off to my next mystery destination for the summer. Want a hint? Too bad.

At any rate, while packing and simplifying has become exceedingly easy and a quite pleasurable (I find that cutting clutter frees my spirit), saying farewell only gets harder. My boyfriend lives in Toronto, as do a few good friends. Putting distance geographic distance between us makes it more difficult to cultivate our relationships – even with this newfangled internet and its social networks.

At the risk of making this post sound like a long-lost chapter in the latest Twilight novel, being apart has given me a better appreciation for the time that I’m able to spend with the people that I love most dearly.

The world is a changin’; clinging to the transient (i.e., people, places and things) ensures only misery. Recognizing that this moment is perfect, on the other hand, and knowing that the love that I have for the people in my life is timeless, brings me great joy and excitement as I press onward, creating my life.

P.S. I’m not sure why I’m so sappy and emotional today. I don’t think I’m pregnant. Though if I am, perhaps I’ll finally fulfill a life-long dream to meet Oprah.

P.P.S. I know that the “reply” feature isn’t currently working in the comments. It should be fixed shortly! Thanks for the heads up.

  1. I wish I could do as you do and take summer road trips to various places in the world. Life would be much more fun then, but alas I cannot.

However, I do hope that you enjoy your trips. I hope they are as fulfilling as you want them to be. I also hope that you meet new and exciting people on your journey as well. Its always fun to go to a new place and meet new people that can open doors to new things and new experiences.

Good luck, and be safe always Davey.

  4. So, I like to view this in iPhone mode using Safari on my Mac. I don’t know why it displays it that way, but the ads are gone – sorry Davey, I know that’s a part of your income. It is as well a part of my traffic (and is looks terrible), so I’m not too pissed ;) . Gonna buy some “Bums not Bombs” for not having to see all the ads.

  5. Davey, why do you move so much? I know you say it’s pleasurable for you, but what is it inside you that makes you so restless, unsettled?

I usually put no stock in such things, but soon after I arrived in Seattle to begin my own Life 2.0, this was my horoscope in The Stranger (Seattle’s alternative weekly paper):

    Real Astrology, by Rob Brezsny

Taurus (Apr. 20-May 20): I was admiring the bull skull tattoo gracing the bicep of the woman sitting next to me on the train. “I’m a Taurus,” she offered. “Where you headed?” I replied. “Home,” she said. “And where’s home?” I asked politely. “Don’t know yet,” she ventured wistfully. “You’re going home but you don’t know where home is?” I stammered. “That’s right,” she said. “I’m just going to feel my way around until I stumble on a stomping ground that makes me feel most like myself.” I was dumfounded. “That’s an amazing coincidence,” I said, “because I write an astrology column, and, like, that’s very similar to what I was going to tell my Taurus readers this week.” She pondered. “Well, tell ‘em this, too: Maybe you don’t find out where you really belong until you don’t belong anywhere.”

Seattle has been that place for me, the place that makes me feel most like myself. When I didn’t belong anywhere else, this place was here, and I could at last be me.

I cut this from the paper and tacked it to the wall by the door of my first little studio apartment, and have carried it from place to place since.

    Anyway…happy travels, Davey!

  6. so how do you manage to move around without a steady job????

I want to be a nomad also, but there is no way without a steady job and/or college.

  7. that was a fast stay!

  8. have a safe trip!

  9. have a safe trip! have a safe trip!

  10. You might want to take a boat with you ;)

  11. Davey, love you but hate the new format…..lost all its appeal – no borders, pics, visually hard to read. Are we getting the mobile feed now on our desktops?

  12. Oprah must mean a Chicago visit ;)

  13. I was going to say the same thing as Michael H: Why are you moving from your boyfriend to Rhode Island? If he’s important to you, why not stay until you both move to your summer destination?

  14. BTW, I lived in Seattle for a couple of years. Loved the city but hated the weather and Seasonal Affective Disorder which hit me hard. But I don’t rule it out for the future; I’d just travel more.

  15. …seems that you’re leaving too fast. The b/f thing didn’t quite work out?

  16. Seems to me you are running away from something with all this travelling.

  17. Davey, follow your heart and your dreams!

  18. Better bring your water wings—everything is flooded down here!

  19. Fed Ex your dirty laundry home. In the states use a prority mail box that’s in the lobby of the USPS Get a large box. (cheap) Make your underware Speedos, one you wear the other is drying after you washed it in the sink. Now you have one medium size suit case to lug around. Learn to live without socks, if you got shapely tanned ankles no one will mind. I prefer deck shoes made by Timberland they grip anything without marking it up and they are both casual and dressy. Flip flops are a waste of space go barefoot on the beach, put on your shoes everywhere else. I only wear Tee shirts as an only shirt, not underneath another. Wear fairly dark denium blue jeans, your spare pair are some black ones for dressy and none of them should be too tight or too loose or especially too low unless you want to show some cute plummers crack, the Speedos too low and your going comando often anyway, because it’s easier in jeans. You usually are shirtless any way and I believe in Beautifying America Campaign and other countries aren’t nearly as provincial as we are. A dress shirt a tee shirt maybe a polo. If I need anything else I’ll just buy it or bum it off a new found friend. Combination shampoo/wash/conditioners have come a long way, I don’t do deodorant anymore there this thing called a shower and a jacusi (don’t remember how to spell it, just use it.)Real men don’t do cologne unless it’s in Germany. Tooth paste and brushes are available everywhere why pack them? I’ve forgotten combs and the staff just gives me one left by a former guest. Now when you go home continue to live like that, if you run out of stuff I’ve got plenty and will Fed Ex it to you believe me I’m giving so much away now because I’m about to move (The church a block away loves me, they’re even getting unworn shoes, neckties and good dress shirts for interviews)The local Men’s Warehouse is distributing all my suits and sportcoats and the other trash bag full of neckties so people will have something decent for interviews if any are to be had. I have an IPod so small I’m afraid a cat might swallow it. I have a bulky expensive surround system I simply have’nt used in a few years at all. Satelite boxes, 2 $850 SVHS VCRs that have complete editing capabilities virtually unused that’s in storage in the garage and will haunt me at my new place as I will not have that storage in the garage. I go to Big Lots on Tuesdays when I get a discount. Why? To get more stuff for future use. More stuff should not be my future, nor anybody’s.

  20. I know how you feel – it is very hard. I had a four year relationship with a British guy in Paris (actually he was half british and half maltese – awesome combination) and everytime I went home I literally cried all ten hours back. Since I was working for the airlines then I could travel to Paris every weekend from Miami to see him but it was tough.

Only you know what works for you but as you get older I believe this type of universe might get harder on you.

As to being pregnant it might be great. I just had two twins and they are so beautiful and the joy of my life.

Travel safe and hope all this rain doesn’t make your mood worse – I heard it was really bad in Rhode Island.

    Good luck.

    God Bless

  21. Hiya Davey :)

This one statement really bothers me–emphasis added by me:

“Clinging to the transient (i.e., _people_, places and things) ensures only misery.”

If you’re referring to the people that you meet casually along your travels, then I have to wonder about your past assertions of cherishing and living the moments where random accidents allow us to effect each others lives.

If you’re referring to the important people that you have in your life, then I wonder about your true level of connectedness ….

  22. Davey Wavey, Do hit the road again, to wherever. All roads lead, someday, to Rouyn-Noranda, intentionally or by chance, so WE’RE GONNA GETCHA here in Rouyn eventually!

  23. Why the hell do you wanna go back to RI? That place is flooding like hell.

  25. Thanks for visiting Toronto, Davey! Enjoy the Universe!!!

  26. it was just the full moon doing it to ya Davey!
    x x

  27. Have you got a canoe? I was watching reports about the flooding in Rhode Island on the news tonight: you’d be better off staying here in Toronto!

I didn’t put my oar in earlier, but I think Montreal would be an ideal place to go this summer. You’d be within two & 1/2 hours of the Laurentians, Vermont, Ottawa, and Quebec City – the ‘cheapest European vacation’ from here! The Beauce – south and west of Quebec City is gorgeous, and the small towns are worth a visit. Montreal’s “Divers-Cité” is a lot of fun (at the end of July), and is much more spread out than Toronto’s Pride Day.

    Bon Voyage, notre Davey!!

    Love, Doug
