Davey do you remember last winter when you did the post where you trashed Catholics for giving stuff up for Lent ?
Ironic.

I’m neverr going to understand why people view your blog and leave douchebag comments, Davey Wavey.
Anywho, giving up the internet is easy for me, but giving up my phone is something else entirely. I gave up my crack!berry for 2 whole days, and it was so refreshing.
So kudos to you, sir.

I am the last holdout and do not own a cell phone. I get so tired of going out with friends and have them sit and answer their phone or read their texts or even text while we are out supposedly to have a good conversation and a good time. Enjoying real time with real people is where it is really at otherwise just stay at home and do your thing with your phone.

I loved the movie “human experience” it touched me greatly. Especially when it talked about the AIDS crises in Africa. Three of my baby siblings are from Africa. Our family adopted these beautiful kids. I think this touched me the most and of course the children of Peru.
This film was ‘pro-life’ without ever talking about suicide, or abortion, or other ‘pro-life issues”.It’s pro-life because it was pro-human.
It was also a pro-Christ movie without actually talking about Him. This movie will move anyone who views it. One of the most powerful movies I have ever watched. Simply breathtaking.
It is produced by Catholic lay persons. Who are faithful Catholics. The production company is grassroots production.

I did not give up the internet but I like to throw my cell in the trash. Many times I leave it at home, and I hate texting. But had too much homework, studies, blogging to give the internet for 24 hours.

Wow… what a small challenge you gave me and I found myself having some withdrawal pains! I continued to carry my phone with me since I need my phone for work but did not use any of the internet features of it. It beeped and vibrated all day long and it was all I could do not to respond to it. People at work actually asked me questions that I normally would look up on line but I told them that I could not and they would have to go look it up on their computers. I actually had someone call me asking me if everything was alright because I had not responded to his text message. Not tending my ‘farms, cities, and smurf village’ really put me on edge! Thank god for cocktails! At home, we only watched regular TV or DVDs instead of streaming a new movie via the internet.
This was a challenge but not something I could not do… but it was an eye opener just how much I use the internet in my work as well as my home life. Going cold turkey like I did this time was not the way to go… I would have to taper off app by app until it was just a phone.
My mom who was born in 1920 once told me that the greatest invention she had seen in her life was the TV. It connected so many people together and gave the world instant information. For me and my generation, I would say the most important invention has been the internet. Like the TV, it continues to connect people together but at even a much faster pace. Thanks for the eye opener Davey!

isn’t it a bit absurd not to be online for 24 hours, and then run to announce it and talk about it – on the internet?
November 22, 2010 at 2:08 pm
I enjoyed the time without the connection. I guess I’m one of the few that views technology as a tool more than a need.
It’s always been easy to switch it off for me. The world is so full of wonderful things I think we sometimes miss out by staying connected. Life should be explored.
The internet can enhance life but it can also hinder it. My suggestion is try to realize its just a tool and like gardening put it away when its need is done.

I joined you on this experience and I even went a bit further and had a 24h electronic-device-free day and I came to the same conclusion as you: maybe I´ll do this on a weekly or at least monthly basis
November 22, 2010 at 7:27 pm
i didnt actually did it on the day you did because i kinda missed it. but i did do in on the next day. im sometimes forced to go long times without internet. with work, school and other activities i sometimes go days without touching my laptop

Touché
November 23, 2010 at 12:09 am
i basically dont have a regular internet access available so being three days or more with out it (as it was till this night) is a regular thing. plus i dont have the time to be online very much. very intersting how it can become such a necessity for some while not for others……

I just find it ironic: See posting of March 14, 2010
http://www.breaktheillusion.com/story/im-giving-up-lent-for-lent/
Apparently giving stuff up for a Christian purpose was totally dumb in March.

i was out of internet for over three months-my hard-drive crashed.from time to time i would go to library and at work.using internet at work was a hindrance as i would have to stay late.so i would entirely give it up.day on day off and so on.—–one instant benefit to not being connected-i got out more often-more excercise-would even get to work earlier-kept on top of my work.so-maybe at least once a week-i think i can do this.—–thanks DW.

November 23, 2010 at 11:13 am
jeesh, you do something good and get blasted????people need to grow up. So I tried to give mine up as well, I lasted 3 hrs:( you are a better man than I:)
November 23, 2010 at 3:09 pm
The deal is that we convince ourselves that we “need” the internet in our lives, when in fact we really don’t. The world has survived nicely without it for centuries.
November 24, 2010 at 1:42 pm
I applaud you Davey, for succeeding in your goal! Personally, I could not participate. My college classes are online and both of my businesses are online. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be possible for me, just that I would have to plan for it ahead of time.
As for the movie, “The Human Experience”, I haven’t seen it yet, but it is available on Netflix. I have added it to my queue.
And out of curiosity, was that a few gray hairs I seen on the sides? Don’t freak out, I am just curious. Personally, I think a man with subtle streaks of gray in his hair is hot! I would have much rather had my hair go gray, then fall it like it has. However, a bald head is pretty hot on some guys too.
Love your blog! Keep it up handsome!

Um, if your only real purpose is to find fault with a blogger then why the f*** follow the blog? Seriously.
I can see the value in unplugging from the net one day out of seven to reclaim some of the peace of mind that doing so might afford. But hey, if it makes you feel all better to think you’ve found a crack or flaw in his thinking … that you might jump on the opportunity to beat him up over it SEVEN MONTHS AFTER THE FACT, then have your fun. (Christ, let me guess — you’ve been holding your breath all this time just waiting for the chance to say, “See, I told you so! You’re a fraud!! You’re a hypocrite! You’re … um, human!!!”)
For the record, I went back and read the entry from March. I don’t much agree with the message DW was sending that day (the topic of the day’s blog entry) but maybe it was a slow day. Regardless, I hardly see the comparison between his criticism of Lent (I think he’s wrong on that point) and unplugging from the Internet one day a week. The sacrifice for one is encouraged for the benefit of a religious belief whereas the sacrifice of the other is made for the “immediate balance it brings into your life each week.” We, as part of a digital community, are often entirely too dependent upon our gadgets and our access to mediums such as the Internet, cell phones, etc. and at what price? Connecting with real people in real life is all too often the price.
And the side-effect of doing most of our relating to others online, as opposed to IRL, is also that we often take a tone with and say things to people we might not say to them in person. For instance, my tone here in this very comment was/has been very terse toward you. If I knew you better and were talking to you face to face, maybe I’d have a different reaction. For that, I’ll apologize to you now. But the point remains, if you are only looking for something that you can criticize the man for, “why bother spending the time to follow his blog?”
Take care.

I have a cell phone but my rule is, “when I’m out with friends the phone is on silent mode” (same thing for when I’m at work). The only exception is if there is reason to believe that a family member is trying to reach me because of an emergency (and that would become apparent if they kept calling me). It’s also annoying when one is trying to enjoy a good meal at a nice restaurant and somebody at the next table is talking loudly on their cell phone. (That has happened to me and my response was to “quite loudly” say to my friends at our table, “Isn’t it nice to come out to a restaurant and pay forty bucks per person for a nice meal, only to sit next to a god-damned payphone? You are enjoying your meal, aren’t you? I know I sure am [not]!!” The person on the phone hung up shortly thereafter so I suppose I made my point rather effectively.
