Although I was gifted I didn’t do any work in my last year of high school. My classical civilizations teacher challenged me to prove that I could blow him away with something the likes of which he had never seen before. For my written independent study project, I penned a 20 page paper on sexuality in ancieent Greece and Rome. I researched it heavily. It was informative, well written and original. It certainly met his challenge.
When I got the paper back, it was marked with a bold, red 86%. The teacher’s only other mark-up was the following:
David, this is very well written and you obviously put a lot of time, effort and thought into it. One question… WHY???
He had called me out for slacking and so I had to innovate and find new ways of seeking attention. So I wrote an appallingly forthright paper that would have been controvercial in the context of any class outside the gifted stream.
I didn’t really think about WHY??? for a long time after my senior year. When I finally did it gave me pause to think. I’ve had several other WHY??? moments since then and I finally realise why and furthermore that my actions have both power and influence. Although I may be coming from a space of humour, zaniness and fun, my audience may not interpret it as I had intended and they may take offense. Maybe they would just find it off-putting and reduce their opinion of my credibility. Whetehr they’re accurate or not, perception is reality to most people. It’s not that my actions were ever bad or wrong but they could have caused misinterpretations of who I am to the people with whom I interact.
So Davey, although I tend to agree with the content of your song, I request you consider WHY??? for yourself. If you can honestly face the WHY??? and be ok with the possible outcomes and interpretations of your actions then keep it up. Despite the things that make me go “WTF?” I read you as someone with a great deal to offer and that’s the context from which I’ll keep reading.

How do you find his music dark? I find it rather happy and uplifting…fun to dance to if anything. I can understand that one can be influenced by those around him but people have been criticizing Davey for blog posts before Scotty even appeared on the blog. If you no longer find the content insightful you should contact Davey himself, or probably just move on.

I don’t think many readers are aware Lesbians here in Toronto love rap music. I am sure there are a small number of Lesbians that read Davey’s gay blog, in American cities that love it too. I also think there are fair number of straight gay bigots that read this blog, I can always tell from their comments. Knocking Davey’s relationship with Scotty by trying destory it with, nasty comments. There is nothing dark about Scotty’s rap music, it’s a gendre of music for our times, times for many young people gay or straight. Scotty is attending university, it costs an enormous amount of money to attend. I admire Scotty’s entrepreneurship paying his own way though school with his music business, to get the education he needs, to make it in the world. Many sudent are in debt for years after graduation. Scotty won’t be one of them.

Jesus people, take the video in the spirit in which it was given. Not everything needs to be buttoned-up, sterile and clean, sometimes you feel like being silly, raunchy and loose….. And to some of the comments about Scotty…. Well for one, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and you may not win yourself a beauty pagent (meaning the person that made the comment about scotty being Davey’s latest f**k-toy)….. second, the singing may not be the best, but when did you last put yourself out there for everyone to see?
