First off….Why is there a Jizz stain on the book that you held up, and secondly what is your manhunt handle name hahaha j/k Love your blog keep up the good work Davey.!!!
…why don’t you move to Canada? Seriously. As for “college” vs. “university,” I hate to break your heart but you live in/are “broadcasting” from the United States. As the saying goes, when in Rome…
…furthermore, I’m tired of people who bash America when they haven’t truly LIVED – full-time – in another country. I was born in another country and my family and I adopted America as our home. Having this context (something many don’t have), I couldn’t love America more (even with all of her “faults.”). Oh, and I can speak and type English – and didn’t start learning until I was 12.
There is an actual technical difference between universities and colleges. Americans just don’t distinguish between the two. I am enrolled in a university, but I’m taking classes in the College of Education at my university. So, really, there’s no reason to rag on anyone. It’s just a colloquial difference.
Isn’t a univerity made up of colleges? At U of Toronto and Oxford, to name two, there are many colleges: Trinity, Victoria, “University College”, Wycliffe, Baliol, Christ Church, and so on. So in fact one attends both college and u iversity at the same time. Often a student will apply to a college directly for acceptance, they each have slightly different requirements. Trinity at U of T is high church Anglican, Victoria is United Church, St. Michael’s is Catholic and so on. The religious aspect is no longer a deal breaker for a candidate but it does colour the culture and heritage of that college.
Colleges are often used by students as their “home” while there. One resides at and takes part in school activities through their college yet they are part of the university as a whole. The Yanks have simply turned “college” into a collective noun. University actually speaks of the scoop as a whole.
Anthony, Anthony, Anthony. What an intelligent response. I forgot, your type doesn’t like immigrants unless they are wards of the State and you can look down upon them/feel superior (perhaps I’m wrong, but I doubt it). Thanks so much for the offer, but I can buy my own cookie. I’ve wasted enough of my time with you. What a shame. Go on with your “Davey loves me” fantasy.
Calm down guys. I think your both missing the point of this entire blog. Anthony, Mark was just giving an opinion and Mark you made a rude comment about Anthony based on no evidence. Can’t everyone get along, I’m sure your both great guys.
Haha guess he didnt like my harassment about the “at university” nonsense….yeah, half your days in Canada…please, you’ve spent a few summers there…you grew up your whole life in RHODE ISLAND.
Hahah it was good to see you rattled though for once, show’s you are real!
But you should have said you say it just to sound pretentious, or just to make you appear more international, or just because you like the way it sounds…but please with the reasoning of “international visitors” to the blog…why not do the whole blog in french then?
I second the french comment! That would be fantastic ;D But seriously, there is nothing wrong with saying University in the US. Since they are practically interchangeable, why does everyone throw a fit over which word Davey chooses? Right. And Davey, I am so jealous that you have heard Scotty’s song, and I wish I could hear it. Maybe if I ask him…
I think everyone has a fit because he’s an American guy and that’s not how we talk. Obviously you are free to say what you want when you want it, we’re just alerting him that he sounds phony saying it. And it sounds like he appreciated it. Suck it!
Davey, I understand your answer to the “What makes you happy?” question. I too have happiness as the context for my life, rather than having it be a result of the content. Last weekend I attended a course on fulfillment; specifically, coaching people based upon their values with the goal of fulfillment, however that occurs for them.
Few people ever really ponder the question “What fulfills me?” Not many people can even really define what their values are. But spending an entire weekend finding out that kind of stuff about me so I can coach people on it was very cool.
So Davey, I think it would be an interesting and insightful blog entry if you were to answer the question “What fulfills you?”
I was chatting with s new friend last night and he was asking me questions and I said something about my carotid bypass surgery hopefully to cure me of the ten year migraine that I have been having that hurts worse than when I shattered my elbow 15 years ago and thankfully recovered 70% use of the elbow but my ten year migraine is like 3 shattered elbows everyday for ten years. then I mentioned that I can only have sugar free snacks because of my diabetis the I told him how I aaaaam blind in my left eye due to my Multiple sclerosis then he was talking about sex some thing called tea bagging and has to do with the testicles and I said I still have the bag but no tea due to my testicular cancer and trauma I don’t have any testicles and take testosterone shots for my libido he asked what else was wrong with me and I told him about my hepatitis C that I got from sharing dirty needles when I was a hippie and the angina that I have occasionally and my cardiac insufficiency and an unusual thickness on my heart near my aorta that they don’t understand and are consulting drs all over the country and the calcium deposits on the arterial walls of my brain that are causing me to have early signs of senile dementia and that was just the serious stuff then he asked how I can be the happiest guy he’s ever known with all that crap that has happend to me and I told him my happiness doesn’t depend on my circumstances. No matter what happens to me I can find a reason to be happy if nothing else i still have my life I can walk I can read. I have a boyfriend who loves me and we are going to be married in the russian orthodox church by his Spiritual teacher his Staretz a monk who has been my boyfriends teacher for many years. I am a bisexual that is more gay than straight but my wife of 17 years is giving me a divoce becase she realizes I have sacrificed my happiness for hers for 17 years and because I thought God would not love me if I were a practicing homosexual, but God has shown me that He created me this way and He will not judge me for living according to my nature So I told my friend why should I not be happy I am the happiest man on the earth. mY friend had laughing all night before this conversation started and he was talking about my gift of laughter and to make people laugh. Then he went on to talk about my joy of life.
I am so happy I can be an example of a joyful person. and how God fulfills my life I am not religious but God means very much to me.He is the source of my joy. I’m not funny now but people say I’m a very funny guy
DAVEY!! U can enjoy THINGS without being ATTACHED to them… It’s okay to enjoy things (i.e. Eckhart loves nice furniture, but he is not ATTACHED to the furniture)…
And your pal Oprah… Some of her FAVVVOOORit THINNNNGGGSSS are nice sheets
anyway universities certain do exist and we have them, certainly I have heard of them in the US too – isn’t that what you call Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc? so I don’t know what the big deal is. Surely it can’t be unusual or out of place to say that you are going to (a) university.
I like Davey’s comment about Scotty Dynamo, when he describes him as a… hot… Canadian musician. I think we almost lost Davey there!
Like big XXXX censored should have come up on the screen and Davey coming back on later looking a little flushed and out of breath
Jake – they live in America or they are Americans? If they are from Europe and they “live here now” then that makes sense.
It’s like Madonna’s fake British accent, sounds foolish when an American tries to talk in a different dialect and makes pretend its natural. She’s from Detroit!
I’m calling BS on Davey.. his answer that nothing makes him happy, because things come and go so you can’t base your happiness on those things… does that mean that is, say, Scotty Dynamo was suddenly taken from you, you’d still be as happy as you are today? We’re allowed to have things in our lives that make up happy and give us joy, and yes, those things go and the happiness fades, but it’s all part of the human existence… the idea of being happy all of the time is a bit of an immature view… that’s just my $0.02.
I think the philosophical question of happiness is a difficult one to answer because of syntax more than anything else. You could define happiness as experiencing positive feelings from being stimulated in a certain way (by things like pizza or sandals or by experiences like hanging out with friends). You could also define happiness as merely a void of suffering. Yet others contend that being at peace with the world and all around them is happiness.
These can all be true and all be false at the same time. We’re just limited in our language.
I’ve been thinking about what makes me happy and how things in the world affect that. I think what he means is that he isn’t happy because he enjoys X, Y or Z, but that he is happy because X, Y and Z are part of his experience in life. If one takes away something, say Y, that shouldn’t stop him from being happy. I would think Davey is someone who uses his conscious will to maintain happy.
Yet another way of being happy is to contextualize yourself in all the much worse scenarios you could be in. You COULD have AIDS, or you COULD be starving in Africa with no clean water or medicine, or you COULD have too large a dick so you always have to be a bottom cuz nobody wants to take you without swallowing a bottle of aspirin. I think Davey’s happiness is closer to this kind, so taking something specific away from him would wound him, certainly, but he would use his mind to focus on the good things that are still around.
However, if something he relies on is suddenly taken away, it wouldn’t be surprising that he’d be unhappy *at that moment*. However, we all eventually adjust to any disaster with time.
I guess the question was just phrased badly because I see it as “What are the five things that will shake you most out of that state of being content/happy if they are suddenly taken away from you?” than “what are the things that make you happy?”
As a gay Christian guy I really do enjoy listening to your spiritual insights. A lot of what you say is very much in accord with what Jesus Christ taught. It’s unfortunate that some people have found it necessary to take scripture out of context to promote their own homophobic and political or money making agenda. The scripture in it’s original language does not even contain a word that when translated equates to the modern day word ‘homosexual’! It does not even refer to the homosexual orientation as we understand it today. The Bible is not a book on human sexuality but a book about a God who loved His people and wanted better things for them. There is only about 6 verses within the whole Bible that even comments on same sex activities (not relationships) and this is generally within the context of idol worship where terrible things were done like killing children as sacrifices to pagan Gods. Christians in general really need to grow up and read the scripture in context. Otherwise apply literal interpretation to every verse in the Bible and in so doing, stop eating all pork, and woman should be quiet in churches etc!(Which again is not required when you read the verses in context) Jesus’s life story depicts a man who befriended the outcasts of society and who despised the religious and spiritually blinded leaders of His day! There is a school of thought that even thinks that Jesus may even healed a gay man in one of the miracle stories! I feel sad for all those gay people trapped in the churches who think that the Bible is against them. We need to speak the truth so that the truth will allow them to be set free! Test everything that is said. Proverbs one of the books of wisdom in the Bible states that a simple man believes anything but a prudent man gives thought to his steps! Jesus loves gay, lesbian and bisexual people, and accepts them for who they are! That’s the truth! Not even homophobia will stop the truth from being made known. An amazing gay church in Long Beach California pastored by Rev Sandra Turnbull, Glory Tabernacle (The Tab) is testimony to God’s work and power in the gay community. Check their website out! From what I understand a gay man was even healed from AIDS. God loves GLBT people too!
Barry thanks so much for posting about the Tab I checked out their website and I’m thrilled that they exist. If I get married to my boyfriend I want to go to CA for our honeymoon,I will try to stop in to worship with them. I wrote them an email about my testimony.I thought I was going to have to start a church like that. I might anyway but I am so glad to know they are there. I might end up working with them.
Enjoyed the talkie very much, you even said my name, going to miss you, camping!,to the redwoods,on the first of may 4 my birthday,10 days in the woods……..yeah!
