Manuel, until you pointed it out (twice) I would never have seen myself as bitter. I have a commitment to help people find more empowering perspectives on the world that work better than the ones they've chosen and perhaps I have lost sight of the fact that if I'm sharing my experiences and opinions as 'corrections' perhaps I am pontificating and coming across as bitter. I appreciate your bringing it to my attention.

I suppose it's all a matter of perspective. I don't see Davey's posts as pontificating and I didn't see what I had written as bitter. Perhaps righteously indignant. :)

What I do perceive is Davey sharing these things with us freely out of love and generosity of spirit. And I perceive people like Milo tearing Davey down. It serves no purpose, in my opinion. Sometimes I do forget that my opinion is only one perspective.

Most of the problems of the world are caused by selfishness (the love of money and power stem from this). Davey is right that change begins with the individual but of course it has to move on from there. Human nature being what it is, however, it's not likely that we are ever really going to resolve the world's problems. As individuals we can only try to moderate our own inherent selfishness. We have the power to make the lives of the people who surround us happier. That in itself is important.

So it is.

The only person you can change is yourself.

So the works begins right here, with me...
and with you.

Be well,

Mosaic, way too much pontificating. The lengths of your post depict a person who is way too bitter; what a waste of time, no action.

Go to iTunes and buy Hope for Haiti Now. I did, even though I don't really care for most of the songs on that album. It was my way of helping from where I am.

Why so bitter and defensive?

I travel for pleasure a lot and I have to admit that feel I have to make up for it by doing things at home.

I love Dave, but sometimes he does pontificate. When you love people, you take the good and the ugly.

Milo, how's your backyard looking?

What do orange juice and Anita Bryant have in common? Both got canned. Way back machine--1977-1978, "..not since Stonewall." We can adopt kids now Anita, but we can't marry. If you recall Anita famously said that she didn't hate homosexuals (she hated the word gay as a cover up for miserable lives)but thank God they can't have children. Yes we can. I'm not sure if there is a state or city that has an ordinance against kissing in public between two the same sex. There probably is nothing about three people so I guess when pushed into service a man's got to do what a man's got to due. We voted for change and blacks went to the polls as never seen before, but I hardly give them the credit. A lot of us good old white boys put in for the man in charge. like that hasn't happened before. The former guy said "Why did the economy have to tank on my watch? The answer was over the oval office's door from his predecessor. "It's the economy, stupid." I'd like to say give Obama and peace a chance. But peace is not actually his strong suit even though he got a prize for it. His time table for troop withdrawal is off the table. it appears that base off Cuba closure is far from "imminent"(sic)and just how long are we to endure that "Don't ask don't tell" crap? That ain't flying anymore than aircraft security. Hey Davey! Why don't you crash a state dinner wearing a speedo? I'm sure even a majority of straight people would love it. Give Obama a chance he's only been in a year and that is hardly enough time to even deal with the mess he's inherited. The issues with that stupid base, I give you tissues. I feel like that poor boy who was yoUTube pleading tearfully to leave Britney alone. Now for the "Don't ask don't tell," I give you the....(that might be construed a terrorist act, they can pull that stuff any which way that suits them now)For the life of me I can not understand why anybody would sign a contract that has the phrase "Subject to change with out notice." I don't remember anyone forcing my hand to let someone eavesdrop on me at will. I knew that National Security would be used as a ruse. Now I have definitive proof. Change is good. I did wear a school uniform when I was in private school. I did not have to wear one while in public school as do the kids now do for "discipline." Change is good. Especially when you have to have several shirts and pants identical. I only had one regulation navy blue tie. My mom threw it away one day and gave me two new ones. She said you got to alternate or they become ratty. I looked at my shoes and shrugged. I got a new pair the next morning for school. I needed new tennis shoes, but priorities are made with no concern over others like they would lead you to believe. The school uniform policy does not address shoes for public schools in my district. Fights are always about shoes these days in public schools, some have even been killed. "Just be glad you don't get all the government you pay for." Will Rodgers about 70 years ago.

It's all a matter of perspective. What some people call <i>problems</i> other people call learning opportunities. Something is only a problem if we judge it to be. And in doing so, we give up our power to the 'problem'. Our language creates how our world occurs for us.

For example, I'm from Canada. En route to a weekend in Chicago, I withdrew some money from an ATM in Detroit and forgot my card in the machine. The only way to get a new one was to cross back into Canada, go to my bank and have another one made. This would take a few hours and we did not have time. The bank would not - and indeed could not - open their ATM and get my card out.

I could easily have labeled this a problem. I would have had a miserable time in Chicago and I would have been completely pissed off at everyone and everything around me for not helping me to have things the way I wanted them to be (which is merely a story anyway - something I'd be telling myself so I didn't have to take responsibility for my situation). I chose, instead, to be powerful and to accept that I didn't have my debit card and I only had $100 cash for the weekend. I made it into an opportunity to be resourceful. I used credit where I could. Where I needed cash I borrowed it from people - even a couple people in our group who I had only just met. I was making requests of people that were bold and that I wouldn't normally have made strictly to challenge myself to be powerful and resourceful. It worked.

This was, certainly, not a life-or-death issue. Take Haiti, for example. It seems they have quite an intractable problem on their hands, at present. We can't do anything about the earthquake having happened. It did. That's all there is to it. The only thing we can control is our response to the issue. Is it a problem? Or is it an opportunity to shine some light on the poorest nation in the western hemisphere? I say this is the wake-up call that we need to really see what's happening down there - not just as a consequence of the earthquake but also day-to-day. Haiti is now fully in our spotlights and we cannot ignore it. It's our opportunity - and our responsibility - to make a difference for these people and this nation. In a dark room, we have 2 choices: curse the darkness (because the darkness is a problem for us) or light a candle (because it's not that tough and we can overcome the darkness with some effort).

If we look at something as a problem, it will certainly be one. But if we look at it from a more empowering perspective then we will be far more empowered to deal with the situation without worrying about all the ancillary 'stories' that come with problems.

I've been following this blog for nearly 2 years and I can't recall ever hearing Davey declare himself a crusader for the environment. He seems, to me, to be responsible for his carbon footprint; not preachy and fanatical. Were he telling us all not to fly, drive, build houses out of wood, etc. I might agree with you because he would obviously be contravening his declared values. But from what I've read and seen he's only asking us to be mindful and responsible. One can still travel for pleasure and have a low carbon footprint. He drives a small car, works mainly from home, lives in a building that has been adaptively reused from its previous function. These things I know for sure. I'm sure he does more of which I am unaware.

I don't believe it's helpful in the least to deride people simply because we feel they don't meet the proper standard. Clean up your own back yard before you start trying to clean others'. That's part of the message in the video and something I think would be helpful for you to hear.

Davey!

Have you ever been a aid worker abroad? Do you know what it's like to be relied upon to help when resouces are non existant? Do you think you could endure the diseases and heat in a war torn country or state for 2-3 months?

If you ever do, as I have, you will discover that you wiil stop thinking about yourself and focus on the bigger problem that you wish to god you could find a solution.

"Think Globally, Act Locally" bu later "Act Globally"
I agree with Michael and Josh. But I also agree with D.W.
If You want to change the World, start from Yourself
and from Your neighbourhood.
But it is good only for the beginning... and it is not enough...
You must do more...

To help solve the world's problems focus on resolving our own issues by learning to love and accept ourselves. If a person does not ruly love themselves, how can they possibly love another or even know what it is like? By solving our own problems, we offer others a source of inspiration and example on solving their own issues. There is not a person on this Earth, regardless of his/her station in life, that is perfect. We all have something to learn, so leave judging others out of this! That is my opinion anyway, for what it is worth.

Davey, why would you even speak about going green when you travel extensively? You must have a huge carbon foot print. It's not like to travel to feed the hungry or stop wars; you travel to look at speedo bums.
hypocrisy |hiˈpäkrisē|
noun ( pl. -sies)
the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense.
ORIGIN Middle English : from Old French ypocrisie, via ecclesiastical Latin, from Greek hupokrisis ‘acting of a theatrical part,’ from hupokrinesthai ‘play a part, pretend.

No, not old, negative and bitter.... just experience more of life and not from a
privileged position. If someone truthfully cares for others, then they will try and correct injustices, pain and despair in the world.

nic - If you are a regular reader and follower of 'Break the Illusion' I'm shocked and angry that you deliberately used the word 'queer' in reference to Davey! Obviously YOU are the bigot and as such show little tolerance for your fellowmen. Frankly, you sound more than a little red neck to me. As Don said in his retort, go take a l-o-n-g look at yourself in your mirror and then begin to do as Davey said - start changing you.

From my experience, Davey Wavey has it right! If we work on ourselves---how we treat ourselves and others, that is about all we can do. Certainly if everyone did that, the world would be a whole lot easier for the poorest among us to get their piece of the pie and live their lives with self-respect and happiness.

You shouldn't be interested in seeing someone fall, isn't that what national news is about, watching someone in the limelight failing? The most important issue isn't weather or not someone shares your view, but weather you're allowed to have one or not.

Peace and let's hope you don't have someone waiting for you to make a mistake to be a form of entertainment for them.

Cheers!
