Video: NOH8? Yes love.

I think the NOH8 campaign has been great – and it’s raised a lot of awareness. But there’s a reason why I haven’t been a part of it. Watch the video below via my second YouTube Channel to find out why:

  1. I love this and I completely agree. The NOH8 campaign is a great idea, but I don’t know that these things actually change anyone’s minds (they’re just as likely to put people on the defensive). I’d be reluctant to put the word ‘hate’ on myself, even with a ‘no’ in front of it – I’d rather wear the word love and try to focus on that more positive energy.

  2. What you fight, you enforce. What you resist, persists. I completely agree!

  3. Interesting point, never really thought of it like that.

  4. Tottaly agree! and are they really stckers?!?!?!?! i always thot it was like makeup or washable markers!

  5. Definitely approve of the message and the Pride themed talky blog. It’ll be on my birthday, too. :D

Davey, I adore the message you put out, it and my own experiences have shifted my view of the world exponentially and in a very positive way. How profound it is to love someone you’ve never met and likely never will, all of humanity! :)

    Happy Pride!

  6. I love this blog! instead of hating the haters you’re sending love! Good job! Keep up the good work!

  7. OMFG I did the NOH8 campaign today! They also came to the Iowa Matthew Shepard awards dinner for scholars! It was so much fun!

  8. Personally the shorts are terrible and are fine for a 12 year old. Your reason for not adding your name to the “No on 8″ campaign is inane and appears hollow and appears as if there is an ego motive as the back story. It is a good campaign and you cant lend your name? Selfish is the only word that comes to mind!

  9. Re-read your post as your reason falls FLAT…the campaign is RECOGNIZED and has had an impact. You are entitled to your own opinion BUT not your own facts!

  10. Hmmm…I really hope this video doesn’t hurt Adam Bouska’s campaign at all… That would totally be my luck too, right after I got my photo taken.

  11. The only way to deal with terror is to resist it, terrorists are only interested in creating death and terror, and they must be defeated. The “No Hate” campaign is sending a clear message.
These photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with “NOH8″ painted on one cheek in protest.
They register a message of acceptance and love by saying that they don’t hate those who seek to deny them the simple act of marrying the one they love.
Davey, this time I disagree with you.

  12. davey isn’t being selfish. he has his reasons for not doing it and thats fine its his choice. its people like you who are the idiotic selfish ones tom

  13. It amazes me that we can not agree on such a simple subject… I agree with Davey that what we resist – persist and I agree with the NoH8′s that we should not hate those who would do evil to us… why don’t we just agree that both sides have valid points and work together to make a positive change in the world? As for me I have learned so much about acceptance and forgiveness from the short time that I have followed Davey’s blogs that I will accept that he has the right to his view and everyone else can accept it or not but please stop trashing Davey over his views.

  14. I understand the point DW is making here. That doesn’t mean I’ve anything against the “NOH8″ campaign (in fact, I’m totally for it!) Everybody has the right to his or her own opinion and Davey is no different and certainly no less deserving of such a right. I’m tired of people trashing others just because they (1) feel that person is a public figure and (2) as such, he or she isn’t allowed his or her own opinion and/or the right to act (or not act, as may be the case) on such.

We are each unique individuals and as such, we’re unlikely to agree on all things all of the time (or even often at all).

Each one of us also has his/her own reason for being here (his/her purpose or journey) in this life and I can guarantee you that while “sitting in judgment” of others may well be a part of your own journey, the “SUCCESS” of that journey is not that you “JUDGE well” but rather instead that you “AVOID doing so” in the first place. ROFL!!! (Those who have taken DW to task for not putting his name behind the “NOH8″ campaign; especially when he’s given a reasonable explanation for not doing so … ARE judging and on some scale, they’re even ‘hating’ on him. I don’t know about you but that sounds a bit like irony to me, considering the reason behind the campaign.)

I’ll lend my name (not that I imagine it matters much) to BOTH campaigns; that of “NOH8″ and that of “peace and love”…

  15. While I understand where you are coming from, Davey, you don’t seem to grasp what sending your energies and what intent is. You are wrong when you say that by going against something, you re-inforce it. If you have positive energies and positive intentions , you can go against anything that is bad, evil or wrong. Why can’t you be against hate, and pro love? Basically what you’re saying is that you are not against hate, you are just pro love. You might want to re-check that…because if you were against hate, there would be no problem for you. You are a great inspiration to many people Davey, people listen to you. The point is to participate, so people can see and follow your footsteps. There are so many people that do not dare to stand up for themselves for fear of hate. The “NOH8″ campaign does bring a lot of awareness, and it inspires people to stand up for themselves, just like the “FUKH8″. Being against something, does not** reinforce it. Maybe you should reconsider joining the campaign davey…but its your opinion, and we all respect that. Much love and light to you davey <3

  16. Sounds to me like you’re hating on Davey for not sharing your point of view. He actually said the No H8 campaign is great. He just chooses a different approach towards the same end that resonates more with his way of thinking and interpreting the universe.

The idea behind the non-resistance philosophy is simple: if you resist something – if you work against something – you give it all your power and energy just trying to hold it back. You keep yourself occupied trying to battle an opposing force. In the end, regardless of who wins that ‘battle’ nobody has built anything beneficial. They’ve only – at best – destroyed something that hurts some people. For example, the No H8 campaign suggests we destroy hate but it does not promote tolerance. Some may thing that’s implicit but it’s not really in the message. Whereas a message like “Spread the love” is completely constructive. Spreading love doesn’t work against anyone and creates goodwill among people. Even the haters have a hard time defending against that.

At any rate, we are all working towards the same goal and it behooves us to support one another as long as our methods and motives benefit people. No sense in us hating and tearing down each other because one sees a glass half empty and another sees it half full.

    Peace!

  17. The No H8 campaign certainly raises s lot of awareness and brings to light an issue that many of us have concerns about. It has some benefit to the world but I agree with Davey on this one. Its primary focus is on tearing down hate and tearing down, in the process, the values and morals of the people who are “hating”.

When we set ourselves against something we do reinforce it, inadvertently. When someone hates and we say no they begin to hate all the more. They begin to feel justified in it, more than ever. They feel they have God on their side and our resistance is their cue to step up their cause. We, in essence, throw jet fuel into their fire.

A ‘Spread the love’ campaign is unassailable by the people who oppose gay rights. We pay no attention to their hate, whatsoever, and show them absolute compassion. We spread only a message of love and we do not resist their verbal attacks one bit. If they do something illegal we let the law deal with it but we do not attack them. In the end, people will see them for what they are and see us for what we are. While they’re busy trying to spread hate and tear us down, we’re focusing all our time on spreading love, tolerance, acceptance. Who looks like the asshole in this scenario?

If you don’t think it works, read up on Gandhi. Read up on MLK. In his I Have a Dream speech, King did not say that he dreamed of bringing down the oppressors or destroying oppression and injustice. He said that he dreamed that states like Mississippi would be transformed into oases of freedom. He said that he had a dream that the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners would be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood. He knew that it doesn’t work to oppose others, be they people or philosophies. He knew that if he was going to have the most benefit in the time he had he would have to focus on building people up and spreading messages of possibility.

However we see it, let’s not divide ourselves now. I’ve read every post in here so far and we’re bickering over minutia when we have a common goal. I have a friend who tries to argue with me that his gasoline car is somehow superior to my diesel car. And yet they both bring us to the same places in the same amount of time. If we want to reach our common goal, it would help if we learned to respect each others’ approaches to reaching it and worked together where we could.

  18. I so agree Davey !! Now I am off to buy my jorts !!!

  19. Nice rhetoric but again is hollow in light of the success the NO8 campaign has had.”DESTROY HATE” is valid as hate is evil and you destroy evil intent. “Spread the Love” is nice sounding but has no punch or edge….com e off as a kind of “Hippy” overview. In the Ad world, it has to be edgy, concise and precise to get the message across in 10 seconds or you lose the audience. “Spead the love conjures up two grandmothers sitting in respective rockers and dreaming of a better world.

  20. Having an opposite view is not trashing Davey. I find his views interesting but in no means are they the “final word”. Hating is something you should not throw around so easily. The right to differ is empirical I have maintained that his views can have a kind of “preachy” Deepok Chopra aura and fall flat. I like DAvey but reserve the right to differ and dissent…and that is not hate.

  21. I don’t see hate as evil. I don’t see love as good. I may like one and disagree with the other but people have a right to do whatever they want to. Just because I dislike what someone else has to say doesn’t give me the right to destroy it or tear it down. However I do have a right to spread whatever message I want to and if mine works better, so be it. Mine will prevail. As for what goes on in the ad world, I’m not concerned with that. I’m not trying to win people over with a gimmick or a tag line. I’m trying to spread a philosophy that works. And I don’t believe it works to say “I disagree with what you’re doing so I’m saying you’re evil and shouldn’t do it.”

  22. Thanks for the insight.

It seems that disagreement is falsely equated to hate in a lot of situations, especially on the internet.

I feel the assumption of hate comes from a perceived lack of tact. Some people just like to be more direct. For example, “Selfish is the only word that comes to mind!” is a fairly direct statement. It’s hard not to recognize a hint of aggression there. But it’s not hateful – hate is very recognizable.

You are right in pointing out the distinction between disagreement and hate.

  23. DW-is entitled to his opinion-but the campaign is a good one-every bit helps these days you think?

  24. I agree that the campaign brings awareness to the issue and that it has had an impact. I feel – as Davey does – that we could do other things that take the focus off hate and take the power from it. That’s all. Both the Black Panthers and MLK fought for the rights of black people in the USA. They both contributed. One of them tore down the enemy while the other one built up everyone. That analogy may be a little disproportionate but it illustrates the point.

  25. Davey Wavey, I was wondering if you could make a blog post or at least twitter about this:

    http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/texas_cheerleader/

The link tells you the story of a female HS cheerleader who was raped by a basketball player and then was forced to cheer his name because she was on the cheerleading team. She refused, her parents sued the school and LOST.

Please sign the petition so that her family doesn’t have to pay for their daughter standing up for her rights as a human being. Could you maybe tweet about it so the petition gets enough votes for something to happen?

Thank you and I love you!

    Kristina

  26. You know what, Davey? I didn’t even have to watch the video to know exactly what it said- I made a prediction of your reason, then I watched the video, and Lo and Behold, I was right… Dunno if that’s a good thing or a bad thing… :)
But it’s funny. I’ve been reading your blog for too long, I get your message. :)

  27. Tom I think you need to re-read my post… I did not say anything about “Hate” except in the context of the “NoH8″ campaign. I did ask that people stop “trashing” Davey over his views… BIG difference. Thanks :)

  28. I agree with mosaic Dave. Tom, we shouldn’t even pay attention to hate, you said hate so many times in your posts, and all that does is make us think about it. I think NOH8 wouldn’t achieve as much as “yes to love.” sure NOH8 would be good but yes to love would eliminate hate and promote love, NOH8 doesn’t promote love.
