“What good has it ever brought?”

That’s what the professor asked in American History X – which I watched with Nick last night. I think it is important to ask that question about all aspects of our lives. And if something hasn’t brought good – either to yourself or to others (even though there’s no difference between the two) – then, why are you doing it?

The most important thing to ask that question of is your perspective. Do you carry grudges? What good has that ever brought? The answer, of course, is none. In fact, it has probaby brought pain and stress. Do you get jealous? What good has that ever brought? None. Do you hate people? What good has that ever brought? None.

You get the idea. If the goal is to do good for yourself and for others, then we must evaluate our lives against that goal. It’s surprisingly simple.
