happy for no reason.

I learned something pretty interesting today: happiness is the goal of everything we do. Ask someone why, why, why, why, why… and they’ll say, because I want to be happy. It may take 20 “whys,” but everything comes back to happiness. Try it. It’s true.

So, instead of making happiness a secondary goal – and trying to achieve happiness through other means – why not make happiness the primary goal? Instead of trying to find happiness by buying an expensive car, find happiness itself. Discover happiness directly.

If a car makes you happy, then you are happy for a reason. If you are happy for a reason, then you are actually miserable, because that reason can be taken away at any moment. Your car could be stolen. Your car could crash. If your reason is gone, so too is your happiness. That isn’t real happiness. True happiness isn’t external – it doesn’t come from things.

Instead, it comes from you. It comes from within.

Happiness is our natural state. Under layers of societal conditioning, culture, and the like, is our true, pure state: happiness. Let’s be happy for no reason. Let’s just be, and let’s just be happy.

(Note: Here, I don’t mean happy as in “smile on your face.” I mean happy as in inner peace. Our natural state isn’t a smile on our face, but it is inner peace. When we say, “I want to be happy,” what we are really referring to is a state of peace. We may not always be “happy” with what happens in our life, but we will accept it and we will be at peace with it. It’s a subtlety worth noting.)
