Nick left this morning and headed back to Washington, DC. Meanwhile, I need to start packing because I leave for Buenos Aires TOMORROW! I can’t believe it!
And as if planning for my two month stint in South America weren’t enough, I fell in love with a condo that I looked at in Rhode Island yesterday. I’m going to put a deposit down on it today. It’s in this beautiful old mill building with brick walls, exposed ceilings, original hardwood floors and beams. The only down side is the neighborhood isn’t terrific, and I’ll need a car. Which, like, I’m totally over. Not having a car for the last few years has been incredibly freeing.
People think you give up freedom when you give up your wheels, but I think it’s just the opposite. You become much more independent. You can go where you want, and not have to worry about parking. You can use your own two feet to get you from point A to point B. Of course, it only works if you live in a pedestrian friendly city. And there aren’t any of those in Rhode Island.
But I digress. So here’s a pic from the apartment. Say hello to those 15 foot ceilings!
Oh hey, and you know what’s not fun? Mortgages. Yup. Growing up… sigh.

Mortgages blow. I got one three years ago. I could have so much more fun if the bank didn’t reach into my pocket each month and pull out that cash.
Earlier this year, I got promoted and the new job was in a city 45 miles one-way away from my house. They had some SWEET condos in the old cotton exchange building (yes, I live in the South) right across the street from my office. I came real close to buying one of them. I stopped, though. I figured with the downturn in the market and the chance they might move me back to Dallas (ack, you know where I live now), then I could just end up screwing myself by planting my flag in another town.
The condo looks great. Do you have a garage for your “car?”

I like it. My brother bought a (small) building in NYC and turned it into condos just like that. It also reminds me of the description of the visionary architect, Howard Roark, architects office in Ayn Rand’s novel ‘Fountainhead’.

I know that the loft/condo might sound like a great idea, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. You might find that life has more traveling in store for you.
Besides, I have a strong feeling that opportunity will be knocking on your door when you get back with an even better offer. Save your money for now–later you’ll find that you will need it for some upcoming events.
p.s. the condo is beautiful, but you’ll glad that you had saved your money for another project in your life. One in which will allow you to walk.
