As I was eating my morning raisin bran, I realized that our society has got it all wrong when it comes to age, youth, and beauty. Well, not that society’s view is “wrong” but it certainly is destructive. I heard a 40 or 50 year old woman talking about how she would be happy if she dropped from a size six to a size four – and that she was scheduling a chin-lift for herself. It struck me as sad that she so much attachment to her body and to youth. No matter how many operations she gets, time she spends at the gym, or money she spends on products, she is hurtling through life toward death. To resist the inevitable is futile. Instead of dreading the aging process, I think we should embrace it. It’s going to happen. It can happen with resistance, or it can happen with acceptance. Even if our society doesn’t find sagging chin skin to be attractive, you still can. Age can be just as attractive as youth. In fact, there are a lot more attractive qualities that come with age anyway. Though your friends in high school may have had firm, subtle breasts – I bet they were hot messes when it came to most other things in life. The fact of the matter is that it is all the cycle of life – and no one part is better than the others. It’s all part of a greater whole. And it’s beautiful, and it should be loved. Every part of it.
